This subreddit and where we currently are.

After much discussion about how the community should be moderated, this is where we currently are.

First I want to get this out of the way. We will not allow hate speech, personal attacks, slurs, bigotry, or anything that resembles it. Okay? Good.

People are going to post electrical questions on the internet, do their own electrical work, and fuck up their own electrical work. This process will happen with or with out this subreddit and its rules. If there is a reliable community where someone can come and get good information on a wide range of electrical topics, then to me there will be a net positive for safety.

We are going to be allowing comments from all users, BUT I urge those who are not electrical professionals to exercise extreme caution when doing so. If information is not blatantly hazardous, it will stay up. The community is going to be asked to use the voting system it is intended. If someone takes the advice of a comment with negative karma, then more than likely, they would have done the wrong thing regardless. Once corrected, leaving wrong comments up can be a learning experience for everyone involved.

I ask you to DOWNVOTE information you do not like, and REPORT the hazardous stuff. We will decide what to do from there. Bans may or may not be given and everything will be at the discretion of the mods. Again, if you are someone who is not an electrical professional, you have been warned.

Electrical professionals: We have an imperfect system for getting a little 'Verified Electrician' flair next to your name. To get verified, send a photo to the mods that has your certificate/seal/card. In this photo, have a piece of paper with your username and date written on it. Block out all identifying information. Once verified delete the image. All the cool ones have this flair.

If we have hundreds or thousands of active verified users, we will once again talk about the direction of this community. Till then, see you in the comments.

Found in my grandad’s stuff

Helping my dad clean out my grandparent’s storage building and came across this. My grandfather was an electrician from the 40’s-70’s and the box behind this was full of vacuum tubes and other electrical odds and ends. Obviously it’s a tester of some kind but as far what it specifically is and how to use it I have no idea and he’s been gone a decade so I can’t ask him. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Any idea what this thing attached to the light is? Has power running to it, but the tiny wire disappears into a wall. The light is a pull string and isn’t attached to a switch, but it could have been at one point, maybe? The red and green wires are attached but theres a black and yellow that are both cut at the sheathing.

Outdoor GFCI outlets do they look new or can they be 20yrs old

Can you tell by looking at these outdoor GFCI's if they are brand new or could they be 22 years old? I was told by HOA that these are original when building was constructed. I talked to electrician that was out here recently and he told me he was replacing the outlet bc it was not done properly. Those outlets are used by HVAC personnel and owners. Location is southwest Florida. Thank you!

Dishwasher burning up 12 wire and not tripping breaker

Post image

Dedicated 120v 20 amp circuit…. no loose connections, no water in the electrical panel box.. they had a different electrician who initially wired the dishwasher pull in a new dedicated circuit yesterday bc the original wire also burnt up. this is today. As you can see the jacket has already burned through plus it’s burnt up on the product side of the panel.

It is a brand new kitchenaid dishwasher.

Couldn’t find UL listing on dishwasher but will come back tomorrow with my meter and run it and see what type of amperage this is pulling at the panel and at the dishwasher.

I am a LLE licensed electrician, but completely stumped unless it’s a faulty breaker and this dishwasher is just pulling an ungodly amount of amperage for some reason. If it’s normal amount of amperage, i will call manufacturer and see if they can get replacement dishwasher..if they can’t I will strip off the factory crimps on the appliance side of the panel and wrap the wire directly around the screw.

Any other ideas?

Renovation Annoyance

My partner and I bought a house recently and want to change the lights in our bathroom. Had to remove the junction box to reorient the screw holes. I now realize this was a mistake, as the junction box was screwed into a piece of metal wrapped around a piece of conduit. I’m in a pickle. Do I take out some of the drywall to put it back in and follow up with drywall repair, or do I go get new junction boxes with clips?

I never would have touched these had I known this was going to happen and will be hiring someone from now on.

Can I use this as a ceiling light?

Hello, I recently got this moon light off Facebook marketplace and want to put it up in our nursery. Located in the US. I know the mount isn't standard but I can work with that. Mostly wondering about the volt and amp difference and if there's something I'm missing for safety reasons. Thanks for your help!

I’m trying to install a harbor breeze ceiling fan but I’m curious if this bar is strong enough to hold the fan? I’ve never installed a ceiling fan so I’m not sure if this is the standard size or if I should buy a new bar. Thanks for any help much appreciated

First Time changing light/Totally Lost

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for advice/help on installing a light fixture in my house.

Cliffnotes: - Just bought house (circa 1965ish) - Removed old Light/Ceiling fan in kitchen - Attempted to install new lights (black to black, white to white, no ground in box so grounded to the box) - Lights did not work

After my googling & trial & error:

  • It’s a 3-way switch setup
  • Red & White wires are Traveler wires
  • Main switch now only reads ~ 20vAC (breaker on)

Pictures are of the ceiling box.

About a year ago I took the toggle switches out for rocker switches. When I put it back together the foyer light worked but the porch light did not. I used two single pole switches. Life got in the way and I’m just now coming back to it. I tried a 3 way mixed with a 1 way switch in various wiring patterns and it didn’t work. Currently using two 3 way switches and can get one light working but not the other. Sometimes both work at different times. The one thing I didn’t do was take a pic before original switches came out but I remember a single wire was connected to both which is what I tried to mimic here. I’m lost so hoping someone here can help with minimal trolling. Thank you.

Does a 20amp fuse connected to something imply that the load is 20amps?

For some context, I'm adding powered doors to my car because it didn't originally come with them. I'll be patching them into the accessories wire and run it through out my car to a resistor, to a 10amp fuse, to a dpdt switch, and finally to the window motor. According to my car's manual, the fuse to the accessories part of the ignition is 20amps. So, am I right to assume the amps from the ignition is 20amps?

Looking for a vintage domed cover for old wiring for a sconce

Upvotes

Hi there! My home is over 100 years old and I have the wiring of an old sconce that my electrician disconnected when he took out all the old cloth wiring, but I will need a domed cover to cover it up. There are similar ones on the other floors but this one is bare. I have been trying to find a source for a vintage one that is somewhat decorative but I think I am not using the correct name? I would love any help as to the proper name or search term or recommendations on where to find one!

Just bought a house and I'm not trying to die in a blazing inferno. Whole panel will be replaced soon, as will k&t runs as money permits, but in the meantime I want to disconnect all k&t lines and live by candlelight for a while if need be. 🤣

Appreciate y'all, thanks!

What kind of cable do I need?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey guys, I found an old mixer on the street but sadly without any cable. I already found out that I need a gx16 3 pin or mini-xlr adapter and I also found a manual online. The manual states "2x19.5V~via supplied power supply unit connected to 230V~/50Hz/40VA" and therefore from what I understood with the help of chatgpt I need an AC/AC power supply with 2 x 19.5V and a female gx16 3 pin. Now my problem is, that I can't seem to find any cable that suits the requirements. Especially no cheap one's for around 30 €. Since I don't even know if the mixer works I'm looking for a cheap option.

Can you guys please help me and tell me what to look for or even better supply some links to buy? I'm located in Germany. Thank you all in advance since I don't understand anything about electricity!

Window AC 6-20 receptacle help

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Just moved into a duplex. It’s has a nema 6-20 plug in from what I’ve looked up, located in the dining room.

When I looked at the circuit breaker box, it has two 20amp breakers listed as dining room 1 and dining room 2 (upstairs unit and downstairs Im guessing?). But both breakers are connected together. Im confused by this.

My question is if I can run a 230v window ac around 18000 btu or possibly a 24000 btu without tripping the breaker? Also since the breakers are connected, does that mean if mine trips, I also trip the neighbors if they have anything plugged in there??

Thank you all for your suggestions/ answers

16a oven into ring main

Upvotes

So guys just had a kitchen fitted (more trouble than it was worth) that included a new oven, not sure I'm convinced the wiring is correct though.

It's a 3.5kw 16a oven that says in the manual it needs its own radial supply and breaker however the kitchen fitters electrician have just added a 20a isolator to my ring main and hard wired it straight to that. No inline fuse or anything.

Does that sound right to you?

Sorry should have added I'm in the UK.

Want to put in LED puck

I would like to replace the recessed lights from 20 years ago with a led light. I measured about 6.25" across the outside of the trim, so I am thinking this a 6" light.

If I unclipped the side clips in pic 2, and I think I figured out how to detach the socket from the bottom trim piece in pic 3, I should be able to just drop out trim piece and leave the socket in place?

Then I can just replace with something like the item below? If anyone had a better recommendation for these, I would gladly appreciate it. I need to do this on 16 lights. Thanks.

For Austin Texas, NEMA4 or NEMA4x for house surge protector?

I'm looking to get a whole house surge protector. I'm either looking at Eaton or Siemens. The Eaton has a better VPR rating at 600 but a NEMA4. While the Siemens has a not as good VPR rating at 700 but NEMA4x.

I live in Austin Texas. With this kind of weather, would a NEMA4 be fine? Or would NEMA4x be better because of the humidity?

And is it worth a trade off getting the better NEMA4x for the lesser VPR protection?

This is for outside
