Meta Moderating this sub shouldn’t come with abuse and death threats - But here we are

I've been part of this community for about 10 years now and a moderator for seven.

Every day, we receive messages complaining about comments removed by the automod. Our automod set to be fairly aggressive in order to filter out unhelpful and potentially dangerous comments. It also regularly removes comments where, if the advice were followed, it could seriously harm or even kill an animal. Obviously, it’s not a perfect system, and sometimes good comments get caught in the process - that’s why we offer an appeal option via modmail for review.

Most people are understanding after we explain why a comment was removed. But some respond with messages like these:

"You people are going disgustingly too far. I hope you all suffer for needlessly keeping helpful information away from people trying to care for animals. Truly disgusting and sickening."

-

"Hope you have a huge loss in your family soon."

-

"Go fuck yourself. I'm SO SICK OF CUNTS LIKE YOU."

-

"People like you and your stupid Reddit forum have ruined this world."

-

"Dumb cunt. I hope you and your entire family die a horrible death. Fuck pieces of shit like yourself."

-

"God damn you people are such losers."

-

"I will work from here on out to make sure your sub is closed due to discrimination. (Seem silly? So does everything you said.) I really wonder what 40-year-old Karen runs this. Guess I’ll figure it out in my new goal to end you!"

-

"Fuck you. Pussy."

-

"You think you’re very powerful removing comments, you little bitch. Get a real life, meet me there, and I’ll slice your fucking throat open, faggot."

All of this… over moderated comments.

Moderating this sub is something we do in our spare time. This sub averages 600 posts and comments every day, yet there are only a few active moderators handling all of it.

We do it to help ensure that this remains a safe, reliable, and focused source of information for pet owners and to prevent people from making dangerous mistakes with their pets.

The level of hatred some people feel entitled to spew is staggering. If you think Reddit moderation ruins your day, imagine what it’s like to receive death threats just for enforcing basic rules. At some point, it stops being worth it.

So if you ever wonder why subs struggle to keep good mods, or why some eventually shut down, maybe consider how the moderators are treated for simply trying to maintain a useful and safe space.

Is it too soon?

Upvotes

Breed: French bulldog mix (unsure, just best guess here) Age: 11+ (was told he was born in 2014 but he was grey in his muzzle when I adopted him in 2018)

I’m really struggling here with knowing if it’s time, if it’s too soon, but I also don’t want to be too late and make him suffer due to my lack of clarity and desire to keep him here with me.

My dog Boomer had a mass on his left knee in November. Took him to the vet, had fluid removed, the veterinarian checked it out and said he saw lymphocytes, but due to the fact it was on the front of his knee he didn’t want to jump to the conclusion that it was cancer and said it was likely a hematoma. He gave him a steroid and he was also given pain medication. In about a week or so, the spot was going down and soon gone entirely, so we sought no further treatment. It responded well to the steroid.

A few months later, it came back. Beginning of February I took him back, they drew more fluid and wanted to see if he would respond to steroids again or not and he’d be back in a week for checkup. Long story short, by the beginning of March he had his knee operated on and the tumor removed (as much as he could get) and sent for biopsy. It came back as grade 2 MCT.

My options were presented to me as: amputation but there was still the possibility it would already be present in other areas of his body, he could refer me to an oncologist, or we could essentially do palliative care by giving him antihistamine, steroid to slow the growth as long as possible, and pain medicine to keep him comfortable.

I chose palliative care as amputation felt extreme and a lot to put him through after everything he’s went through, he’s old (the vet I adopted him from had him marked as DOB July 2014 but I suspect he was older than 4 when I got him) and I saw two masses near his front leg on his chest that reminded me a lot of the first lump that came up, so I assumed it had likely already spread from his hind leg. An oncologist would unfortunately cost way, way more than I could afford and I feared radiation or chemotherapy would just be extending the inevitable for my sake, even if I could afford it.

His leg has gotten massive, and he’s had smaller lumps pop up. I see swelling on his abdomen just in that left side. His spine has become very prominent and hunched.

He has been eating drinking and taking his medication like a champ up until the past week. He’s no longer taking his medication in chess, pill pockets, peanut butter, stuffed in a chunk of wet food, or even a chicken nugget. Before, he’d gobble it up like it was nothing. The past two days his eating has also declined. This morning he barely licked his food, and turned away from it.

He’s drinking like normal.

I bought him a new toy, and he’s been playing with it, running as well as he can with a massive leg, and overall his expression and demeanor (aside from eating and medication) seem to be good. He seems to be in good spirits.

But when I have to get my pill dispenser and force to the back of his mouth and hold his mouth shut to force him to take this nasty bitter medicine, and he’s foaming at the mouth and looking straight into my eyes, I feel like he’s asking me to stop. I don’t want to humanize an animal, but I can’t help but to get this feeling that he’s asking me to stop and telling me he’s ready. I start sobbing every time I have to medicate him. And then he ends up coming to me after I let him go and he shakes the bitter spit out of his mouth, to comfort me.

Before he’d take the medicine willingly. It’s been like this for a few days. Now the past two he’d barely ate. This morning he would not eat at all.

He doesn’t need me to assist him with mobility, he’s getting up and down on his own and pretty well considering his leg, pottying outside like normal, trotting after his toy, tugging it with me.

I don’t want him to decline and suffer because I see the areas where he’s still doing okay and I want to keep him here longer for my sake. I wish he could just tell me for certain he was ready to go and be at peace. I know he doesn’t have the same sense of morality as a human but part of me again just feels like he’s telling me it’s time but my god I feel like it’s too soon. I don’t want to rob him of time that he could still have feeling mostly okay, and good???

I will probably call the vet tomorrow when they open and tell them it’s time. But I guess I just really wanted to come here too and see if I’m really making the right choice for him.

I included some pictures of him today. I’m sorry this is all so long and I sincerely thank you if you made it this far and offer a response. I know it’s a lot.

Please help. My dog has done this 4 times now.

Upvotes

We brought my dog to the vet and said she was fine bur this is the 4th time. And the longest time. I'm extremely worried there's something underlying. She is having a hard time walking, weakness in both front and hind legs. She is confused and constantly licking her lips, and just struggling to stand up. Then after a while she regains her strength.

Edit: She is female Breed is a Belgium malinois She is about 6 years old

Do animals get tiny blood bags during surgery?

This is a very general question, but I was just hit with the realisation that humans during surgery frequently get blood transfusions to make up for the blood loss. Do pets have that too? I assume not all surgeries require that, but is that something that happens? Does it happen often? Is it needed more often than in humans, especially for smaller animals like rodents, considering that the smaller an organism, the faster the heartbeat, so the blood flows out faster?

Should I declaw my cat that has a painful nail condition?

My partner and I have a precious tortoiseshell angel named Dana. She just turned 6 in Jan. She has had a nail condition since we got her when she was 6 months old. We have taken her to numerous vets and none of them know exactly what is going on. Whatever condition she has, it causes her nails to become thick yet brittle. They get really gnarly looking and eventually they either fall off or she has to rip them off. Sometimes she even bleeds when the nail falls off. Trying to trim the nails that she does have is incredibly difficult because she gets very upset when we even touch her paws as it seems to cause her discomfort. She screams, tries to pull away, etc. One time when we were at the vet, they offered to trim her nails. They had to have 3 vet techs hold her down and she got so upset so that she peed during the struggle :( We took her to our vet recently for her annual check up and our vet tossed out the idea of declawing her. Of course, we’re very against declawing and would never choose to declaw any of our cats under normal circumstances. However, we’re wondering if the pros outweigh the cons in this case since it seems like her nails cause her so much pain and she can’t use them as normal claws anyways. We don’t want to hurt her more by getting her declawed but we also don’t want her to have to live the rest of her life in pain.

UPDATE:

I should’ve added this in my original post. We have seen several vets about her condition. No vet has been able to figure out what is causing this issue. One vet thought it was a fungal infection so they put her on her on anti-fungal and steroid which both did nothing. The steroid also caused her to have recurring UTIs so now she is also on prescription urinary dry and wet food. One vet thought it could be an auto-immune condition like Lupus. We think this is probably the most likely cause. I should mention that she also gets mouth ulcers on the roof of her mouth which that same vet saw as another sign of an auto-immune issue. Since not vet has been helpful and has basically given up on her, we’re also at a loss :( We know that declawing her would 100% fix the issue because she wouldn’t have nails to cause her discomfort but we’re just worried about how the declawing would affect her. She essentially can’t use her claws as normal claws because she’s missing several at any given time and the ones that she does have cause her pain. She still has the urge to scratch but she can’t actually scratch any of our posts in the house.

Dog may have eaten honeysuckle/privet - how concerned should I be?

Upvotes

Hello, my dog may have ingested Japanese honeysuckle or privet and I’m wondering how toxic it is? More info: I’ve been cutting invasive plants in my yard to get rid of them. He has been picking up some of the branches to chew while we’re in the yard. I don’t think he’s been ingesting the wood, but he could have ingested small pieces in the process of chewing it. I think he chewed some a day or two ago as well. Someone is always with him while outside, so I don’t think he’s eaten any without us seeing. He doesn’t eat leaves or anything so I think if he’s ingested any, it would be minimal. He is 55 pounds, around 7 years old, and doesn’t have any known medical issues. I’ve done a google search for signs to look out for. I’m just wondering how concerned I should be? Thank you!

What diagnoses should I pursue?

Upvotes

Hello,

I posted recently but did not get any feedback. I am calmer now so I'm going to try again. Female fixed cat:15

Been having bouts of inappetance since December. She was also throwing up almost daily around December. We did blood work which the vet said looked great. She had 3 teeth pulled which fixed the inappetance and vomiting. I did feel like there were 2 more teeth that could have been pulled, but the vet didn't seem worried about them.

Then in January, inappetance again. Pain when I touched her stomach. Hiding. Took her in and she was constipated. Started giving miralax, and all was well.

End of March, inappetance again. She also puked once before the vet visit, but it was a hairball. I thought it was constipation again, so I ramped up miralax dose. Took her to the vet a few days into this with no change and the vet simply gave me Mirataz and an anti nausea med. She also brought up lymphoma or IBD and suggested an ultrasound. My hesitance against this is because she hardly throws up anymore, and she never has diarrhea (except when we gave her too much miralax). So it doesn't seem like IBD or lymphoma to me.

She did have a case of colitis in 2023 that she had to be hospitalized for, but she rebounded and was fine until December 2024.

Are there other things I should be pursuing? I've been googling and found Tanya's CKD list, which includes constipation as a symptom. It also states that early CKD isn't detectable with regular blood tests/checks of creatine and BUN (however in December her BUN was high, but the vet mentioned it was likely caused by not eating and the frequent vomiting). I also saw it can increase the acidity in the stomach which could make cats not want to eat. I could get a SD.MA test maybe?

I could get the ultrasound, which would either show inflammation or not which would point to lymphoma/IBD or not.

The other day my cat also meowed while peeing. I initially thought it was going to be constipation, so after she was done I went behind her to see if there was any poop. I was surprised to see a smaller clump of pee. But since then she has been drinking plenty of water and seemed to pee fine since. No other symptoms associated with this. But I was wondering about a UTI maybe.

The vet seemed interested with saying the symptoms were because of discomfort from arthritis. But the symptoms she mentioned of that (bunny hopping before jumping, not wanting to jump) is not the case at all. She didn't run while she was sick, but has since started back up, and she jumps onto all kinds of tall furniture.

I've been giving her mirataz regularly which had kept her eating. The best was I gave her the 1.5in strip and she ate well for about 4 days. I've tried giving her smaller doses to mitigate the side effects which makes it not last as long. But I notice her appetite going down, so it is really just masking the issue.

The vet mentioned giving her predisolone for the suspected IBD/lymphoma since it is part of the treatment. But idk. I am on a limited budget which makes if difficult. I could afford a bigger test but that would be IT. My vet doesn't really seem interested in getting to the bottom of it either/exploring other things.

TlDr: cat has been having reoccurring inappetance and has chronic constipation managed by miralax. Currently taking mirataz which just seems to be masking the issue. Low income owner so I can't really test for everything under the sun, but the current idea of lymphoma just doesn't seem to match. But maybe I should get the ultrasound anyway...

My cat might have eaten a lizard

A small lizard (common garden skink, Australia) entered my house and I cannot find it anymore. There’s a chance one of my cats ate it

I already give them nextgard spectra once a month. Is that enough to be protected against tapeworm in case they did eat the lizard? Should I give them something else just in case?

With this brand I’m always confused. I keep reading that it covers tapeworm, but also that the dose is not high enough. So I’m not sure if I should give them something else regularly for prevention (?milbemax) in case they eat lizards or geckos as these usually find a way inside my house?

Thank you so much 🙏🏻

Are mupirocen, Neosporin, or polysporin safe for hedgehogs?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm really hoping you guys can help me out. My daughter's hedgehog has what looks like an infected area around one of the openings where his quills come out. The quill is out, but the area looks awful. The inflamed area is on his back half a bit up and to the side of his tail. It's proofed up in a big red angry "O" shape. There's no pus, but it looks atrocious and really painful.

My vet's office doesn't open until tomorrow, and we may not be able to get him in if they are booked up. They keep openings for established patients, but the little guy has never been before. They are always booked to the rafters and I'm worried we won't be able to get in.

In the mean time, we've cleaned the wound with soap and warm saline water. I am seeing online that original Neosporin and polysporin are okay to use, but in other places, I'm seeing that they shouldn't be given to hedgehogs. I also have 2% mupirocin, but I can't find anything anywhere if it's safe for hedgehogs.

What should I do? I don't want to sit by and do nothing until we can get him in to see a vet. It looks really nasty, and I want to give him something ASAP to help him heal faster.

Thank you in advance! This hedgehog is loved and treasured by our entire family and we are all very worried for him.

18 month old cat with lung mass

Upvotes

Hi 😕 our little cat, Luca, has been suspected to have a lung tumor, lymphoma and has tested positive for feline leukemia.

He was breathing weirdly a few days ago so I took him to the vet, where they quickly found that his lungs were full of fluid. I was shocked as his behaviour has been normal. I really thought they’d find he had a stuck hairball or something. He’s 18 months so maybe he had been a bit more low energy than usual but we assumed it was because he is finally growing out of his kitten energy.

Anyway, they suspected FIP but he was negative. The heart and blood all looked fine, but in the very last blood test it showed positive for FeLV. We are told our other cat, 4 years old and in perfect health, likely either got it from our kitty or was a carrier.

We took Luca to the clinic and he was further tested and kept over night. They found a mass which they suspect to be a tumor. They drained all of the fluid but They told us that we can either take him home and give him Prednisone and hope he has a comfortable last few weeks to few months left, or do chemo and perhaps lengthen his life expectancy to 6 months.

He’s home on the prednisone and he is doing ok. He’s definitely more subdued but he is eating, drinking, using the litter box normally, purring, and even playing a bit. He is social.

The vet couldn’t confirm anything exactly but she seemed quite sure. She said that it COULD have been some coagulation from the lung draining, and not a tumor, but because of the consistency of the fluid, they suspect that he has a tumor. She also said that there is no proof that it is related to the FeLV positive result and that many cats test positive but remain asymptomatic. She said his chances are not looking good but it’s never 0%. Of course that gives this upset cat mom false hope.

My thinking is that he is best off at home where he feels comfortable and we will feed him lots of his favorite foods. We have the option to do more tests and to do chemo but I don’t think it’s worth the pain and stress we can’t afford very extreme interventions, especially if the vet can’t ensure his life would be much longer anyway.

It’s just such a pity. A friend suggested ozone but I am skeptical.

Iso microchip

Upvotes

TL;DR at bottom

I had a ISO international approved microchip placed on my pet 8 years ago (homeagain).

I knew I would be moving internationally and was told homeagain will work for international living.

I have since found out, while they are able to be scanned with a universal scanner, homeagain can't actually see any information on a non USA pet (IE: changed address and phone number for outside US).

But when the chip number is scanned and input into the chip registry finder, it shows up as registered and gives the US homeagain number to call, even though home again told me my pets account is now registered with the UK Homeagain branch which handles European addresses.

My pet was lost last night, found, chip scanned, and they found it was "registered and the chip is a Homeagain chip" and the US Homeagain number was given. But on calling, no info could be found.
Someone from my vet clinic here recognized my cat (and saw the post from the place that had him) and notified me...I was very lucky.

I've been on and off the phone today with Homeagain and ultimately they said I have to find another microchip company. They can't even change the information/address anymore. Two years ago they did for my European address. But they never informed me my pets info would not be available.

TL;DR So now I have to place a second chip. My pet has an EU pet passport, and I live in a non EU , but European country.

How do I deal with this?

Two chips?

I want to have this chip surgically removed. I feel it is dangerous to have two chips. I also feel very upset about this situation.

Is it possible to remove a chip? I fear if my pet is lost again, and they scan and find the first chip, it is HIGHLY unlikely a place would think to check for a second chip.

Cat ate silica gel lining of chicken container

Upvotes

About 2 days ago I came downstairs and found that my cat (5 months) had knocked over the trash can and ate the majority of the food scraps in the trash can but didn’t have any GI upset and abdomen wasn’t tense or painful when I palpated. She has kept down all her meals and pooped as normal. I was thinking about it and realized that right before bed the night she got into the trash we threw away one of those styrofoam containers from some chicken breast and that the silica gel pad lining was not in the tray when I cleaned up the knocked over trash that morning. This morning while walking around I kept noticed some yellowish pellets of vomit that had a somewhat formed shaped but were very squishy and seemed to have white filling and believe it to be from the gel liners of the chicken. She is eating breakfast now but still doesn’t seem painful but I’m highly concerned about obstruction or side effects at this point and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts. I live in rural Alaska and the nearest vet is 2-3 hours away but it is Sunday and no vets are open until Monday so radiographs today aren’t an option. My biggest concern is that the gel seems to be absorbent when in the package with the chicken and I’m worried it will block her but she did vomit it up (with no other food inside) so I’m hopeful she’ll be okay; just curious if anyone had any pets do the same or if there are any opinions on next steps

Possible UTI? Unsure

Upvotes

Hello all! I have a 1 and a half year old domestic shorthair girl, desexed and up to date on shots/ flea treatment etc.

She has always been a hungry girl and will wake me up for food around 5 am, I will usually give her breakfast then we both go back to sleep. Lately I’ve been feeding her as normal and she has been waking me up around 3am. I will feed her, she eats but does not stop meowing.

It’s gotten so bad that she will jump on my bed and literally slap my face until I get so annoyed I shut her in the bathroom. This is when I noticed blood in the sink, now on two different occasions. My housemates have caught her urinating in the sink once before with normal urine so I have good reason to believe she is urinating this blood.

I find it strange however, I never see any blood in the litter box which she has also started to use more frequently. Signs here point me to UTI but the blood in the sink and not in the litter box is a little confusing.

Other than frequent litterbox trips and constant meowing anytime I get up and move she is acting normal, running around, drinking water and playing with the humans and other cat. I am in the process of making a vet appt now but I’d like to have some idea of what’s happening, what tests they may do and how much this is going to cost.

Thank you!

please help -- cat won't eat after appetite stimulant

Upvotes

disclaimer: i'm very new to cats! this cat i'm taking care of came back to our house acting very weak. (she was originally my neighbor's cat but they threw her out because she stopped getting along with their other cats. she likes living outside and we feed her. we have never taken her to the vet before). she wobbled side to side when trying to get up and layed down immediately after. we went to the emergency vet. they said maybe one of the neighbors put some sort of chemical on her bc her fur smelled strongly of citrus and mint. the vet said the smell and her behaviors made sense with poisoning/toxicity. the vet ran blood tests to make sure, and gave her IV fluids. everything came back normal in her blood tests besides showing being a little dehydrated and not enough food. the vet gave her pate food at the clinic, and she ate it.

at home, i tried feeding her the food we usually give her, but she doesn't want it. so, i've been force feeding her. we went back to the same vet after 24 hours, and she told us her vitals are fine. she prescribed us appetite stimulant but she still doesn't eat. i've tried offering fancy feast, chicken and rice, her usual food (Sheba) pet food. but nothing. I AM NOT TRYING TO DIAGNOSE, SHE WAS ALREADY DIAGNOSED!! i'm simply trying to find ways to get her to eat again

information: female, 2-3 years old, lethargy, pale gums, spayed, no other tests were done

Help with kitten count

Vet told us they counted 5 kittens on the xrays, but we only count 4 and only 4 were born with everybody being fine and currently nursing. Any chance the vet counted wrong or should we be concerned? https://imgur.com/a/VGJ4NKL https://imgur.com/a/l3lekpv

I think I figured out why 3 of my 4 cats have been drooling since Wednesday! They ate pasta sauce made with garlic, and now have some kind of gastrointestinal distress? What do I do?

Upvotes

I wish I could just take all three of them to their vet right away but I literally cannot.

After going over and over in my mind what could be causing this insane drooling and why it’s only afflicting 3 of 4, I remembered that the 3 droolers ate a bunch of spaghetti in meat sauce I left on the stove to cool on Wednesday evening. That’s the only connection of what the 3 of them did that the 4th did not.

Coco (age 2) started drooling on Thursday morning; Sprout (age 2) on Thursday night; Harley (age 15 in 3 weeks) Saturday morning. It’s currently Sunday morning and Harley and Sprout are drooling a lot, but Coco doesn’t seem to be drooling anymore.

They’ve all been acting 100% normal in every way, other than the drooling, which none of them have ever done before. I looked in their mouths the best I could and Harley seems to have some swelling in her lower left… lip? Coco’s mouth was fine and Sprout wont let me check in his mouth. They’re eating fine and drinking normal.

How long should I just wait this out? Is there something I can do to detoxify them? Is this going to hurt their longterm health?

Asthmatic cat

Upvotes

I have a senior cat that has recently developed asthma. I have an air purifier and dust free litter. I keep her inside with the windows closed. What else can I do to help prevent flare ups? Does anyone else have any suggestions? She takes prednisolone as needed, but I’m trying to minimize how often she needs to take it.

Enlarged heart/Asthma in 3 y/o cat

Upvotes

Hi! Looking for advice/info about my cats current status. I took my baby into the emergency vet a few days ago because he was taking fast/forceful breaths. Vet diagnosed him with asthma and we started him on an inhaler. He was seeming okay for the next couple of days; eating normally, playing, grooming, normal resp rate. We just got some chest x ray findings and they reported that the heart is enlarged (also worth noting he was previously diagnosed with a 2/6 heart murmur). I’m on a waiting list now for an echocardiogram. I’m really worried and google isn’t making me feel better. Realistically, is there any reasoning for an enlarged heart that won’t cut his life expectancy/quality?

Move cat with me?

Upvotes
  1. cat

  2. 14

  3. neutered male

  4. burmese

  5. approx 8 kgs?

  6. anxiety

N/A

I own a 14 year old Burmese cat that ive had since i was very little. he is very attached to me (sleeps in my bed almost every night, sits on my lap when im on the toilet, follows me around the house aimlessly etc) and is also a very anxious cat and has previously required treatment for anxiety induced injuries (excessively cleaning and gnawing at his stomach until significant blood and damage). I have tended to him through all of this and he’s much better now, and we have a real bond. however, at the end of the year i am moving out of my parents home for university (almost 2000kms away). I am really struggling with whether i take him with me or not and need some advice. some points to take into consideration:

  1. My parents also have a 5 year old girl cat and they get along great, playing together, sleeping practically on top of eachother etc. (also I will obviously miss her but she is also very affectionate, but is like that way with my whole family, as opposed to just me). would it be unethical to separate them?

  2. he's quite high demand and I often spend my nights sitting on the floor of the bathroom trying to convince him to drink because even if he’s thirsty he just refuses to drink sometimes. this is something that annoys my family quite alot and im worried his needs will go on the backburner if i go.

on the flip side of this, i will be in uni, going to lectures, partying late etc, and so his needs may be neglected that way as well

  1. is he going to think i abandoned him? how can i make the transition easier for him? is there anything at all i can do?

  2. my family is very full (4 siblings, both parents at home, 2 cats and a dog) and is always bustling with activity, so will my bfs and i's flat, where we will be out in the day, be unethical?

  3. he has moved ALOT (2 countries and approx 8 houses) and i know moving is anxiety inducing for him. i had a dog that was a similar age and the amount of moves he did really destroyed him in the end and i dont want to do the same thing here.

i think that is all. please give any tips or advice on what I should do. I am so heartbroken about leaving him and him thinking i just abandoned him. any insight is greatly appreciated.

Dog died suddenly-why?

Background my cavapoo was 10.5 years old, just had her yearly check up 2 months ago and all was well.

She loves playing in water/swimming in our pool and has done so her entire life

On Tuesday we were all sitting around the pool. She never actually got in the pool this time, but was walking around the pool licking up the overflow water from hot tub to pool. We thought nothing of it. This is 1/1000 of water she normally consumes when we are outside.

At 6:30, I went up to put my daughter to bed. My husband hung outside still with our dog and my son. At 7, we put our son to bed and our dog was outside (away from Pool) drying off and running around. I checked to see if she wanted to come back inside and she didn’t yet so I let her stay outside.

At 7:15 my husband goes out and she is laying down. And won’t walk. My husband tries to prop her up on all 4s and I look outside and her 4 legs are completely stiff and she is rolling uncontrollably(maybe a seizure maybe a stroke?)

Once that stops, we lay her down, she’s alive, a little foam at the mouth. Somewhat catatonic. Husband rushes her to ERvet, upon arrival they check her vitals and said she “looks good” but something is obviously wrong, they tell him they are going to get a room set up to do blood work etc. I arrive 10 min later and she is alive and I’m holding her. She pees on me, I look at her, her tounge in blue and next thing we know she’s in cardiac arrest and dies.

I’m wondering, did the pool water have anything to do with it? Was she just an unlucky pup that left us a little too soon? I feel like 10.5 is not that old I recognize it’s on the older side, but I just felt like she was so healthy and we had a few more years left with her

I’ve read about water intoxication but like I’ve previously mentioned, she wasn’t gulping a bunch, relative to what she usually ingests, she barely had any. The ER vet didn’t really give us an answer and it’s just killing me.

Small red dry/crusty hairless patch on hind leg

I’ve just noticed a dry/crusty red hairless patch on the rear left leg of my 11month cat. It’s located just on the joint of his leg on the outside.

He is an indoor cat and we only let him out in the garden briefly while supervised. He is not on any medication and does not have any medical issues as far as I’m aware.

Any advice on what it could be or what I should do would be appreciated as this is making my anxiety go mad! picture1

Bird flu

I’m cat sitting and he’s an indoor/outdoor cat. I’ve seen him catch mice, heard about a lizard, but recognize birds are not outside of his range.

I was cleaning and noticed a bird feather on the floor. I used a paper towel to pick it up and washed my hands with warm water and soap.

I have three indoor cats I’m going home to today. Idk if the feather was from an infected bird. The cat I’m watching has zero symptoms. Are there precautions recommended by a vet that I should follow going home today?

Urgent please help!

My 3-month-old kitten started vomiting Friday evening, first clear frothy liquid, then greenish/yellow bile the next morning. She hasn’t eaten since then and has become very lethargic. She hasn’t peed or pooped at all since this started.

It’s now Sunday evening. I managed to syringe-feed her some watered-down kibble earlier today, and she kept it down, but she still won’t eat on her own. She is weak, losing weight, and mostly just sleeps.

She has chewed cardboard/tissue in the past, so I’m worried this could be a blockage. I’m in Essex, UK, and I can’t afford vet care right now. I’ve reached out to charities but haven’t had a reply yet.

If anyone has advice, has been through something similar, or knows of emergency help or vet support in the UK, please let me know. I just want to help her and don't know how :(

My dogs teeth are falling out

Any veterinarians on here? I just discovered last night that my dogs bottom teeth are loose and separating from the gum line. I give her mostly hard food and treats to keep plac from building. I brush her teeth although I will say I’m not very consistent. I don’t have money to take her to the doctor. Anything more I can do at home ? Please help!
