Lol, watching this loop over and again gives me the feeling that it's not a real bear, but rather some sort of mechanical toy.

bears do walk that weird way, though
12
u/Smauler Nov 29 '15
My (now dead) burmese cat used to walk that way too. He was generally an idiot.
26
u/Narcissistismic Nov 29 '15
You could have left out the "(now dead)" part and no one would've known and we'd all be slightly less sad.
2
u/Smauler Dec 07 '15
Then everyone would have wondered why he used to walk that way, but now doesn't.

Yes they do. A bears back foot steps in the track of its front foot. Thats why they look like they are goose stepping

u/slithymonster Nov 29 '15
It's a video of Knut, or possibly Flocke. Both were bear cubs in Germany.

I'm gonna be that guy. This little fella's name is Knut, and he died suddenly of a drowning after collapsing because of encephalitis. Brutally sad. He was 5 at the time of his passing.

Thomas also died :(
Knut and Thomas were such a joy to watch. I know there was a huge amount of debate about the whole way the Berliner Zoo dealt with Knut. But good lord, they were so enjoyable to watch and Knut was enjoyable to visit.

u/flubberFuck Nov 29 '15
Fuck that's heartbreaking. ...whyyyy!!!!

u/froet213kil Nov 29 '15
It's ok. Knut and Thomas is now playing together at Arctic Paradise as much as they want :-)

Is that really how you say Polar Bear in German? Ice Bear?
God I love German.
Ah, crap... I've started capitalizing my Nouns again, do'h.

Oh. It's pronounced as k-noot. I always pronounced it as Nut. I'm nutty.
Edit: Kernoot. As in canoe but with a K and a T.

Oh, please no. It's a German name. It's just k-noot, as one syllable - but the commentator in the original video doesn't seem to be able to say that, so he adds the e-sound. But it's definitely not kernoot.
Here's a movie about Knut, in German. Around 21 seconds in, his name is first mentioned. That's the actual way to pronounce it.1

u/Blobskillz Nov 28 '15

24
Nov 29 '15
Yeah, it was anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. I remember it (well I had to look up the name, lol) because it was the first documented non-human case.

Knut was so popular (Knutmania) that there were several songs written about him.
There don't seem to be any good videos of Knut geht's gut so that's just the song. And here is Knut, der kleine Eisbär.

It's all funny and games until he breaks down the wall of your igloo and eats all your seal stew.
