Do I need to replace the grill grate?

Post image

Like the title says. It got a little rain on it and this is the best I got after scrubbing away with lemon juice. Is it worth keeping?

no. Wash it with soap and water. Dry it good. Get it hot then apply some oil and burn it on. No biggie

After every session I crank up my burners fire 20 min with the lid closed to burn the shit out of anything left on the grill, then while still hot (but burners off) I scrub it hard with a steel grill brush, then use some water and a different scrubber to wash the dust off, and finally, give it a light spray of oil (aerosol can works best). It should smoke a bit. But if not that's okay. Close lid.

if the next time I go to use it, it has a bit of that rust, crank the heat up for five minutes, use some water again to scrub it, then lightly respray (with burners off). Restart and cook.

It’s hard to avoid a bit of rust, it won’t do any real harm. High heat is your friend, a bit of water, and a spray of oil.

In my experience with this style of grate, the underside is going to reveal more about how much the metal has deteriorated. What you see here is fine, and will clean up easy, but do flip it over and make sure the rust doesn’t go deeper or the metal isn’t flaking, etc

Edit to add: I don’t see anything here to suggest that it’s going to be worse on the bottom, but I had to replace one of those recently where the top looked fine but it started to disintegrate from the bottom. So don’t let that happen to you, give your bottom some love!

This is a generic reminder message under every image post

Thank you for your picture post to /r/castiron. We want to remind everyone of Rule #3. All image posts should be accompanied by something to foster discussion. A comment, a question, etc is required.

If you've posted a picture of food, please explain why in a comment so people can have some sort of conversation. Simply dropping a picture of food in the sub isn't really fostering any discussion which is what we're all aiming for.

Posts that are a picture with no discussion can and will be removed by the mods.

Thank you!

I don’t think so. You can always get rust off and reseason.

Are you seriously asking this question right now? No! I'm pretty sure that nearly every used grill grate in America looks like that.

If you want to prevent rusting don't rub something that's acidic on it.
