Penny.
She didn't cost a single Penny (found kitten)
She costs us a pretty Penny (picky eater)
She's as pretty a Penny
Is mostly brown.

Awwww. I had a stripey brown Penny for a good long time. She had small copper highlights and Penelope seemed like a good fit, but we called her Penny her whole life anyway.

u/DeficiencyOfGravitas Jan 16 '25

This is why y'all have those brain worms.

34

u/Critical-Path-5959 Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25

You really shouldn't if their paws came in contact with it. She mentioned paws getting stained which means there was contact with the moisture. A cat's paws are actually very unhygienic and you can get some very nasty infections from eating stuff they touch. Even if you don't have a symptomatic infection, chronic exposure to bacteria that is harmful to your gut biome can do some really nasty things in the long run like up your risk for cancer. It isn't worth the risk unless you're starving, having a blood sugar crash, etc.

OP already said they ate it though so the ship has sailed. Statistically they're probably going to be okay, but the negative impacts are so big I wouldn't do this again or eat any leftovers especially lol

Edit: no interest in debating this, really. I love my cats but their paws are not something I would put near my mouth or food. There's a reason why pregnant women aren't even supposed to scoop their cat boxes. Everyone is free to do what they want but the conversation was about whether or not we would do it and I was explaining why I wouldn't.

Why do we need to imply that anyone just aware of risk is afraid or that we think every single exposure is a risk of death? Giving big "if you wear a mask you live in fear" vibes and I'm not here for this anti intellectual pseudoscience nonsense. I'm more annoyed at that flippant response than anyone who eats something after their pet touches it, honestly.

41

u/minisooms Jan 15 '25

Yeah, I did read all the info she gave and kind of know the implications, but I'd be willing to take the risk, maybe scoop out the bits by the paw prints 🐾

9

u/Critical-Path-5959 Jan 15 '25

You do you, I just have too vivid of an imagination to handle it haha

That said, I would be EXTREMELY conflicted over something like paella, so I'm not really judging too harshly.

11

u/Ancient-City-6829 Jan 15 '25

do you have anything to back up the claim that "chronic exposure to bacteria is harmful"? I've always heard the exact opposite. Small amounts of harmful bacteria are beneficial for our gut biome as long as they dont make us sick

7

u/Critical-Path-5959 Jan 15 '25

Traditionally it was considered ok for our gut biome/immune system, but I'm talking about the actual impact on our soft tissues and organ damage. I'm having a hard time linking to it cause I'm on my phone (google keeps sending me AI stuff, but I PROMISE there are scholarly articles on this if you look) and out and about, but specifically look up the link for bacterial exposure and colorectal cancer, which is gaining more and more evidence. It's also a possible explanation for the rise of colorectal cancers as repeated antibiotic use may also contribute to it as well.

Additionally worth noting is the developing link to Alzheimer's as well. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25230225/ Parkinson's as well may have an environmental bacterial link too.

Again sorry cause this is limited but I definitely recommend looking into that perspective, not the gut biome/immune system perspective. Its like how repeated infections in our lungs raise our risk for lung cancer, skin cancer from sun damage etc. Anything that keeps damaging our cells is a risk for long term issues.

The big issue is we don't always show symptoms or think we're actually sick when we're sick with foodborne illnesses. People who just get tummy aches a lot but never vomit could actually be getting multiple infections from bad food practices. They may think they're fine but they have no clue they're at an increased risk for cancers because their bowels are constantly inflamed. Their immune systems may be strong enough to keep everything at bay but that does not mean everything is fine.

There is so much we don't know about this and it's just much, much safer to wash your hands. In the very least, exposure to toxoplasmosis from accidentally ingesting litterbox materials is not safe.

→ More replies (2)

21

u/lovelyxcastle Jan 15 '25

I'm very much team "Cats don't belong in the kitchen, they have nasty disgusting little paws." I used to be a vet tech so I've seen how nasty infections from cat scratches can be.

That also said, I would definitely personally still eat this since the cat stepped on the cover of it. I would also not serve this to ANYBODY. I would eat it in the same disgusting way that people will eat like, a pretzel they dropped on the kitchen floor in their own house.

They're germs and bacteria I'm already in contact with daily, like my cat sleeps on my pillow and then I shove my face in it to sleep so, it's nasty but it also is what it is.

9

u/Critical-Path-5959 Jan 15 '25

If this were a cover like a pan lid I agree, but putting your hand on a towel covering something wet, pushing your hand in enough to get liquid to stain/coat it, and then lifting your hand up shows that the liquid that was pushed out by you pressing it will get sucked back in. Cloth towels don't have a microscopic barrier to keep germs out if it gets mixed in with the water.

But that said, fair and valid take. I'm not bothered by people taking a risk for themselves so much as I'm just correcting the notion that nothing is getting in. And then a little more bothered by the notion that there is 0 risk to paws touching food or that plenty of people don't wash their hands so this is fine. You get me?

I personally do not eat stuff I drop on the floor... Cause my dog usually has already eaten it, lol. But if stuff falls on my clothes and they're not like, horrible, I'll eat it too even though it's not technically sanitary.

9

u/lovelyxcastle Jan 15 '25

Oh things are absolutely getting in, I won't argue that at all.

There's an inherent risk to pets coming in contact with your food, cats moreso but dogs still have nasty little paws. (Sure, they don't shit in a box- but outside isn't much cleaner) It's definitely an interesting thing for me to consider- I'm super anal about washing my own hands before eating so I'm not sure why I'd be comfortable eating this, maybe having a level of familiarity with my own house and pets but not knowing what I've touched outside my home that other people have also touched is where I draw the line?

Dunno, anyways, yes still eating this dish is absolutely gross and can 100% be a health risk, especially if you are personally immunocompromised in any way or your cat isn't consistently on flea/tick prevention.

It's one of those "That's gross but I'd probably do it anyways" things.

u/JimmyJonJackson420 Jan 15 '25

Busy Thanksgiving in the kitchen. Mom doing several things at once. Near the end she asks loudly, “Where’s the pie?!?” We all start looking around. No pie. Mom thinks she’s going nuts.

Us: “Wait, what’s Pooky (mischievous black cat) sitting on?” He was curled up on a towel atop the table. Eyes at half mast. Hmmmm…warm….

My mom had put a kitchen towel on the pie. He’d shown up and decided nice place to sleep. Not just that, he’d squished it down and out the sides. Perfect warm apple pie hot tub. We thought funny.

Not my mom.

u/kimberlykxpf Jan 15 '25

I hereby absolve the prime suspect of any crimes, the reason being overwhelming cuteness!

I just love how we’ll never understand what goes on in their little minds. What led kitty to just go like ‘oh, I have a great idea! What if I just walk over the paella?’? We’ll never know, but it makes sense to them somehow 😂

u/S_Belmont Jan 15 '25

That is the cutest, fluffiest ragdoll.

2

u/Lurchie_ Void Jan 15 '25
