Am I the only one that thinks putting the stems in is bad?

Edit: I learned something today!

stems are even more flavorful than the leaves

1

u/TheFenixKnight Feb 03 '20

Huh. My chef always made us pull the leaves off and work with only the leaves would go in.

6

u/HalPaneo Feb 03 '20

Your chef is probably an all around douche

5

u/MrKrinkle151 Feb 03 '20

He probably thinks cilantro is the same thing as parsley then, because that's a common parsley treatment.

1

u/karma_king69 Mar 15 '20

well that makes sense for presentation purposes but any other reason is retarded

5

u/eyejayvd Feb 02 '20

Mmmm, stems.

23

u/emmabethh Feb 02 '20

They hold most of the flavor!

wut?

2

u/GunNerdNW Feb 03 '20

The joke is that famous youtuber babish has the cilantro tastes like soap gene and mentions it every time he cooks something that has cilantro in it.

u/Kittenkerchief Feb 03 '20

But it’s a cross post from there?

17

u/mudah Feb 02 '20

Am I the only one thinking this wasn't washed Cilantro and someone's about to get a mouth full of sand?

4

u/LeahaP1013 Feb 03 '20

Or E. coli

12

u/wsims4 Feb 03 '20

Why do you think it's not washed?

7

u/gmiranda01 Feb 03 '20

Sounds about white

3

u/RSNKailash Feb 03 '20

This looks like what we get, mixed bag cilantro, prewashed and spun, has stems. But if you chop it finely like this you cant tell

1

u/dittany_didnt Feb 14 '20

Yeah, it's still bunched, but I think we'd be able to hear the sand. I got some irregular mint a few months ago and whoever received the order didn't break it down at all. We usually don;t need to, it comes every time- except for that one time. Anyways I could hear the sand.

That guys an amateur. You should see the professionals at a thai market stall whipping through it with a wicked old carbon steel unit.

15

u/TheFenixKnight Feb 02 '20

Would you happen to have a video?

2

u/pcalvin Feb 03 '20

Guess I should have put a smiley on that last one. Brutal audience here,eh? I didn’t take a video of the Thai marketplaces, but it left a lasting impression.

thats a lot of soap

15

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '20

Fucking sucks getting looked at like a total “Gringo” when I ask for no cilantro on my carne asada burrito every time lol. Probably have to fry up a separate batch and they hate me.

29

u/pucklermuskau Feb 02 '20

my condolences for your handicap.

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '20

I’m so glad I didn’t end up with the gene for that

8

u/Fnurgh Feb 02 '20

I find the stuff disgusting and can taste it in anything but... I wouldn’t call the taste “soap”.

3

u/Melbuf Feb 03 '20

does it taste like a stink bug smells to you? if so same gene issue as those of us who think it tastes like soap

2

u/GapeNationBud Feb 05 '20

Dude ive always had this and always hated cilantro and never had any idea this was a thing until literally right now. Im 28.

Wtf

2

u/Melbuf Feb 05 '20

I was in my 20s when I figured it out also . People thought I was crazy

24

u/cl191 Feb 02 '20

As someone who does, I can smell it through the video lol

13

u/Vixxihibiscus Feb 02 '20

As someone who does I can smell it in everything it’s in. Even when it’s hidden/minuscule. It’s dreadful stuff.

10

u/HalPaneo Feb 03 '20

Curious, there's another plant called culantro, or culantro coyote in Costa Rica that is a flat leaf with spikes on the side, kind of like dandelion, smells and tastes just like cilantro but supposedly without the soapy taste for the people with that gene. Have any of you ever heard of it or tried it to see if that is true?

here's a link to that stuff

u/CricketPinata Feb 03 '20

I think I might have something wrong with me, as I believe I do have the gene, Cilantro tastes sharp and "soapy" to me, but I can still taste the citrus tones and kind of lemongrass and parsley flavors going on underneath it.

So it tastes soapy to me but Mexican food tastes "off" without it, and I absolutely need it on my tacos or they just don't taste "right", neither does my guac.

They all taste "flat" and like they are missing something if I don't include it. I find the flavor pleasant even though I totally could see how it would be described as soapy.

I think I have just kind of forced myself to like it by eating it over and over. I also have a pretty high "gross" tolerance, and have absolutely never been a picky eater, so maybe it is just my tolerance for strong flavors in general.

I also don't smoke, don't drink heavily, and generally have a pretty sensitive nose, so it's not that my senses are less sensitive or anything.

I am the only person I know who seems to have the gene but ENJOYS it, I feel like I am really alone with my experience so far.

5

u/kassiussklay Feb 03 '20

My dads the same way, used to hate it. He forced himself to eat it 2-3 times a week for a summer. Now he loves it.

2

u/SyrupyWanker Feb 06 '20

The smell is super strong to me and I even gag a little but if I don’t think about it while eating I don’t even really taste it. I wonder if I even have the soap gene or I just don’t like the taste..

1

u/CricketPinata Feb 06 '20 edited Feb 20 '20

How would you describe the flavor?

Would you say it has a pronounced clean and citrusy flavor with hints of parsley or does it taste soapy?

1

u/SyrupyWanker Feb 06 '20

I’m not going to lie, I also have no idea what parsley tastes like. I’ve made pasta e olio with it but I still couldn’t taste anything. I would describe cilantro as fresh but very overbearing? Is it like if it tasted like soap I would know exactly that it tastes like soap?

2

u/CricketPinata Feb 06 '20

How I have had it described is it has either an intense rotten flavor or intense antiseptic flavor like how strong cleaners smell.

The antiseptic smell flavor makes sense to me, but unlike other people who dislike it I also taste all the lemongrass/citrus/parsley notes.

Parsley tastes like... just has a very refreshing fresh vegetable taste to me, bright and almost celery-like but without some of the stranger backend things going on with celery.

Parsley and Cilantro taste similar to me for the baseline flavor, but parsley tastes very fresh and clean and pleasant, while cilantro is quite strong and has the over notes I described.

2

u/HalPaneo Feb 03 '20

Super sharp knife goes through cilantro, then he scrapes it away with the edge... That bothers me so much

4

u/Jasper-Jozef Feb 03 '20

Eh, a knife is a tool. I do it too.

I understand what you mean, but for me I’d rather work with comfort and faster and maybe have to sharpen my knives a bit more often then to always have to use the back of my knife or a benchscraper.

28

u/starvingviolist Feb 02 '20

This is the correct serving size for parsley.

57

u/pinky_blues Feb 02 '20

*cilantro

15

u/Mickd333 Feb 02 '20

freedom parsley

18

u/Steak_Knight Feb 02 '20

Freedom coriander

1

u/TriMageRyan Feb 03 '20

Found my fellow Italian

20

u/MattGhaz Feb 02 '20

That must smell so good

-6

u/TheQueefGoblin Feb 03 '20

That's a strange way to spell "disgusting".

9

u/MattGhaz Feb 03 '20

How can you think any fresh herb smells bad?

5

u/Melbuf Feb 03 '20

because roughly 20% of the population has a gene that makes cilantro taste/smell like soap or a stink bug

8

u/MattGhaz Feb 03 '20

Soap mutants lol.

0

u/Melbuf Feb 03 '20

2

u/MattGhaz Feb 03 '20

Like I get it that it exists, but I love cilantro, can’t get on board with the hate.

18

u/granger744 Feb 03 '20

soap mutants am i rite

10

u/MattGhaz Feb 03 '20

Could only imagine living such a sad life.

37

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '20

I do this shit with bag spinach all the time, quite satisfying lol

6

u/JumpLiftRepeat Feb 02 '20

Aaaah, that sound is music to me!

3

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '20

That's a lot of tacos

14

u/grottohopper Feb 02 '20

I chop up kale this way to put it in rice, is very fun

3

u/ImLawfulGoodISwear Feb 04 '20

I like rolling up the kale and cutting it into spaghetti-like strips, makes it nice and crunchy when sauteed with some garlic

4

u/FriedChicken Mar 05 '20

I like to take kale, throw it in the trash, and know nobody will ever have to endure that nasty shit

7

u/Csharp27 Feb 02 '20

Oh god this gives me flashbacks of working at Chipotle. SO. Much. Cilantro.

1

u/GoNzOs-WaY Feb 03 '20

That was one of the most satisfying videos I have seen in a while.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '20

Doesn’t waste a stem.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '20

Should’ve just broken out the lawnmower

5

u/Changy915 Feb 03 '20

Guy is clearly very skilled. But I'm still worried about those fingers.

3

u/Swiftblade13 Feb 03 '20

He's wearing a cut resistant glove under the rubber glove on his left hand. The cuff is visible in a couple of the frames briefly.

2

u/dzm0trn9k Feb 03 '20

Just here to show my support for cut gloves! PPE! That’s for me!

1

u/Antpitta Feb 03 '20

Looks delicious. However I think the greater work is getting that much cleaned and dried cilantro aligned like that. Doesn't make for as sexy of a video though. Kind of like "how many people can dice an onion faster than they can peel it?" <Raises hand>

1

u/dittany_didnt Feb 14 '20

Not the finest chiffonade I've ever seen, but also not the worst. And marvelously effective. It'd take me literally eight times longer to get through this much cilantro. Mine would be a lot more consistent and much finer, but that's not always necessary.
