Daily Question Question Thread - March 29, 2025
Welcome to the Daily Question thread at r/churning !
This is the thread to post questions about churning for miles/points/cash. Just because you have a question about credit cards does NOT mean it belongs here. If you’re brand new here, please read the wiki before posting.
* Please use the search engine first - many basic questions have been asked before.
* Please also consider scanning (CTRL-F) the last couple days worth of Question threads
* If you have questions about what card to get, ask here. If you have questions about manufactured spending, ask here. If you have questions about bank account bonuses, ask here.
This subreddit relies heavily on self-moderation. That means that if you ask something that shows you haven’t done any research, you’re going to get a lot of downvotes.

Anyone have experience continuing churning after moving abroad? Im a permanent resident soon to be citizen but moving abroad for extended time. Will maintain bank account and a US address but just concerned about logistics of applying for credit cards and/or receiving them abroad?

u/JManUWaterloo 6d ago
Chase and Amex both ship cards expedited abroad. For Chase you can do it immediately after approval, for Amex you need to wait 10 days after approval

I'll have about $10 to 15k spend, which hotel card would you get?
Family of six, we take two domestic trips a year and one international every two years.
International is usually Europe.
Maybe a trip to Japan.
We find hotel card points will be easier to use than points for plane tickets.
We are not brand loyal.
We're remodeling, so with that spend, what will give us a great return with regard to sign up bonus points, etc.
Thank you!

You can probably get a more detailed response in the What Card Wednesday thread. However, I'd recommend the American Express Business Platinum 250K MR offer which you could convert to around 600K Hilton Honors points when there is a transfer bonus.

It really depends on where you're traveling to. Do you have a specific city in mind? Decide on that first and then see what hotel chains are available for your destination.
If you don't care about your destination, then in terms of elevated SUBs, the Hilton ones are currently near their all-time-high. The Hilton Honors has a 70k + 1 FNC SUB and the Surpass has a 130k + 1 FNC SUB. Hilton FNCs are uncapped and can be used towards any Hilton hotel, including their luxury resort portfolio, assuming that a standard room is available.

Seeing new SUB for Citi Aadvantage MasterCard, as well as for a Barclays AA card. I’m 2/24. Which one should I apply for?

If I PC my CSR to a freedom does my priority pass status instantly go away?

Curious to know what others would do. I'm in an AA hub and debating getting the Barclay's AA card before it goes away. This would put me at 3/24 until Jan 2027. I do want to downgrade my CSR and reapply later at some point this year which would put me at the "below 5/24" limit. We're a ways away from 2027 😬
Would you get the Barclay's card before it goes away at the end of the year or save the spot?

u/Rus_Shackleford_ 7d ago
AA miles go a long way. If you’ll definitely use them in the not too distant future I’d do it.
I’m in a similar boat. I keep going back and forth on it. But I have a couple chase cards that are above it in priority, so if it’s still there once I get those, I’m going to. I got great value out of the citi biz bonus. Me and my wife to Saint Kitts and back with enough points left to go to Antigua and back.

u/jojokikikween 7d ago
A decent personal card SUB that will be going away soon is a good use of a 5/24 spot. I’d go for it, unless there are other Chase personal cards besides Sapphire that you want to get between now and 2027.

u/Hockeyhawk5 7d ago
If you do not have any other Chase cards that you are interested in getting while below 5/24 then yes, I would go for the Barclays Aviator Red 70K after 1 purchase offer currently available.

I'd get the Barclays AA card. The SUB is elevated at 70k right now and the card is getting discontinued soon. AA miles are much harder to earn than United or Delta because of lack of transfer options, at least until TY points become transferable next year. And unlike United or Delta, AA has largely held off on devaluing their miles for several years.

I missed the 30 days cancellation window for my Biz Plat. Is it possible to cancel now for pro-rated refund or downgrade to something such as a Biz Green (receiving pro-rated Plat refund) and Cancel for full refund (of Green)?
2
u/One_House_5087 7d ago
I did the same thing downgraded to the green, received most of the Axbp back. then shortly after cancelled the green ( big mistake, don't do that went straight to jail )
2
u/JManUWaterloo 7d ago
I’m already in PUJ. It’s not like it would make any difference. Did you get the 95 AF back when you cancelled the green?
1
1
u/Hockeyhawk5 7d ago
After the 30-day window you can no longer get a refund of the annual fee for cancelling. But you can get a prorated refund of the annual fee on your biz platinum if you downgrade it to a biz green card. Believe if you cancel the Biz Green card after the downgrade then you will forfeit that annual fee.

Declined for Amex BP yesterday due to too many open accounts.
Thinking I’ll reapply in 10 days so if approved I can use it on my taxes. Do they always pull from Experian and trans union? For can I leave one unlocked?
4
u/Hockeyhawk5 7d ago
In my experience, after you apply and are approved for your first card with Amex, they usually do not hard pull your credit for new card applications after that.
1
u/El_Babayaga69 7d ago
This will be my first card with them. Ink train is slowing, and I’ll be able to hit the 20k signup bonus with my taxes. But it’s due in two weeks.
Saw some dp’s online of ppl applying within 30 days.
1
u/Hockeyhawk5 7d ago
Amex is not usually very sensitive to recent inquires and accounts. Have you already called recon?
1
u/El_Babayaga69 7d ago
Yeah they said this was a case where they can’t recon. It’s due to having “too many total accounts open”
Recon rep told me to close out some of my old sock drawer cards lol. Frustrating that and underwriter wasnt open to reviewing. Even HUCA three times same answer. But heard online Amex is strict on the rally high subs
3
u/terpdeterp EWR, JFK 7d ago
Amex is moderately inquiry sensitive for their cards if you haven't previously established a relationship with them. Also, ideally you'd establish a relationship with them first via a personal card. This is because the biz cards count the personal cards as a pre-existing relationship, but not vice versa.
One option is to start off with one of the Amex cobrands, which should be easier to get approved for. The Amex Hilton Honors and Surpass currently have elevated SUBs with FNC.

Helping a friend book an international J award flight TPAC. They have C1 miles and need to transfer to IB, which has become a problem due to the <90 IB rule. They can't transfer C1 -> BA -> IB, and the flight doesn't show up on BA.
My P2 has a C1 card (earning miles).
Is this a possible workaround, or will it get stuck during the household part?
Friend C1 -> P2 C1 -> P2 BA -> P1 BA (through household account) -> P1 IB (book for them)
P2 doesn't have an IB account under their name <90 days, so that's also an issue. I am an AU on P2's VX if that makes any difference.
1
u/dhessian19 8d ago
This shouldn't be an issue transferring into IB. The 90 day issue is transferring “out” of Iberia. I recently signed my P2 up for Iberia, BA, and QA accounts and had no issues transferring between QA-BA-IB within the hour of signing up for all 3. Be sure that your name, address etc. is the exact same between programs.

I'm looking to do a Tokyo trip in 2026/2027 with my wife and daughter. (3 round trip tickets from Chicago).
I currently have like... 300k Hilton points and 80k UR points.
I have time to collect some awards obviously, but I guess I want to see where I should be focusing my attention. American Airlines? Aeroplan?

u/AdmirableResource0 7d ago
Transferable currencies and AA miles are both good for this trip. Check out the trip report thread for ideas of how people have done trips to Japan on points before (it's a pretty common post in that thread).
Word of caution though is that if you are hoping to do business/first class flights, most of that has to be booked significantly in advance so you would need to build up a point stash very soon for a 2026 trip. Also it's pretty difficult to get 3 tickets all in upper class cabins on the same flight, so you'll need to do research into workarounds for that.

u/kharin123 8d ago
I’m planning a trip to Japan for 3 in 2026/27 too.
I’m just beefing up URs and MRs as transferable currency ready to deploy when it’s ready.
Being ready to book/transfer ~365 days in advance. No idea which airline yet. The dream would be the aspirational business class but… not holding my breath.

u/techtrashbrogrammer SEA 8d ago
depends on cabin but in general Asia miles for JL is a common strategy

u/sleepytill2 ORD 7d ago
+1, this is how I did my Japan trip for 3 in business class: Asia Miles (Cathay) for JL at 355 days out.

CSR (6 years) up for renewal next month and I want the upcoming (hopefully) CSP bonus. Already have CFU (6 years). Transfer UR points from CSR to CFU now, cancel CSR, and apply for CSP when bonus pops up?

Recently got approved for the Alaska personal card. Do you need to have a BOA checking account to pay for the monthly statement. I don’t bank with them.

No... but BOA makes their CC payment more difficult than it needs to be. Autopay setup won't be available for the first two statements if I recall correctly.

Hello 👋 a friend sent me a referral for the C1 Venture. On the referral page, I seem to only see a “see if you are preapproved” and when going through the form I am only preapproved for the “VentureOne for Good Credit” card…
So questions are:
- if I were to apply for the Venture card anyway, does this indicate I’d likely be denied?
- is there any way to apply for the Venture through the referral without needing that pre-approval?
Thank you!
5
u/terpdeterp EWR, JFK 8d ago
The Capital One pre-approval tool isn’t 100% accurate, there are DPs of applicants getting denied despite the pre-approval tool showing an acceptance and there are DPs of applicants getting approved despite the tool predicting a denial.
What’s more useful are the potential denial reasons that are listed when you use the Venture X-specific pre-approval. If “too many accounts” is listed as a denial reason, your approval odds are very slim and I probably wouldn’t bother applying.

Few weeks ago got my third Biz Platinum in past 12 months (Regular App + 2 NLL - 1 hacked, 1 in app. For past couple days In the App there is now ANOTHER Biz Plat NLL offer (Reminder: Earn 175,000 points blah blah blah) and clicking through application page looks totally normal, customized with my business, etc . Are there exceptions to 1/90 and/or is there any risk to applying for this one, too? I want it.
2
u/ural_world_travel 7d ago
Biz plat is not subject to 1/90. DP I applied for 2 of them one week apart and was approved for both

Where do u see offers in the app? I don’t see any… tho I just got my first Amex in March lol
1
u/wildearthman 8d ago
Click on "Offers" and if there is a NLL offer for you, you will see it above the merchant offers.

My Amex gold AF statement is due next week. I'm planning to call and see if they can give me a retention offer, but if I end up cancelling, will the Amex benefits still cover expenses that were made before cancellation (Ex: $35 of Resy credit left, $10 monthly Five guys credit)?
1
u/dhessian19 7d ago
Today I received a 15k for $1,500 in 3 months. Kinda meh, but I'm keeping the card anyway.

Currently have a plat that was upgraded from a gold for a $2K/50K offer; hit the $2K and the 50K just posted. I now need to refund some purchases that were made before the upgrade; will they count against the $2K spend requirement and lead to a clawback?
8
u/MyAltAccountIsuSpez 8d ago
No, it's $2k net purchases within the upgrade period. Returns for prior purchases won't hurt. That being said, make sure you're at least a couple hundred over your spend to account for future returns!
5
u/terpdeterp EWR, JFK 8d ago
If those purchases were made before the upgrade, then those purchases didn't count towards the upgrade bonus and refunding them has no impact on your bonus eligibility.

Amex 1 in 5 day rules for credit card::
Got approved for Hilton personal Friday 4pm.
Can I apply for the delta biz on Weds before the elevated bonus ends?
Which if my math is right, Weds is the 6th day. Just double checking cuz my math doesn’t always math. 🥴

Used an old referral link for P2 and the referral bonus just hit the CIU account that I closed in January. Statement shows 20k 'unavailable for redemption'. Not sure how best to proceed with making these points available or if I should head straight to FF thread...
5
u/garettg SEA | PAE 8d ago
What does your online account show for the close account UR? I have been in a similar situation when an unexpected referral hit a closed ink and once the statement closed the points went from pending to posted and I was able to move them to an active card.
1
u/harshreverb 7d ago
Bonus is dated 3/18 and statement closed 3/28 so they should be available by now. Might be taking an L on this one.
1
u/lenin1991 HOT, DOG 8d ago
If it had been within 30 days of closure, you could call Chase and reopen it. Not sure there's anything at this point.

Hi,
I'm planning to get a new credit card but unsure which one to choose. Here’s my current setup:
Since I recently got the Freedom Flex, I’m now looking for another card to complement my setup. I prefer no annual fee, but I’m open to other options.
Credit Scores Equifax: 760, TransUnion: 759
Also Are Robinhood and Fidelity credit cards worth considering? I haven’t researched them yet and don’t have accounts with either.
Do you have other recommendations based on my situation?
Thanks for your time—I appreciate the help!
