Daily Discussion News and Updates Thread - April 04, 2025

Welcome to the daily discussion thread!

Please post topics for discussion here. While some questions can be used to start a discussion/debate, most questions belong in the question thread unless you love getting downvotes (if that link doesn’t work for you for some reason, the question thread is always the first post on our community’s front page). If your discussion is about manufactured spending, there's a thread for that. If you have a simple data point to share, there's a thread for that too.

I believe I’m posting in the right place

My question is

Yeah… you’re not in the right place. There’s a question thread. But HONESTLY your question is probably better suited for r/creditcards

FM is the death knell of churning/award travel loopholes.

If you were on the fence maybe get down off that thing sooner rather than later?

I wonder about this vis a vis the internet and hobbies I'm general (outdoor activities was the first comparison to come to my mind, but it holds for many things). The barrier to entry for a lot of things has been drastically lowered with how easy it is to find information (or increasingly, it's not even found - it's fed through an algorithm). In turn, many more people end up participating in something, but this usually results in some kind of overcrowding and degrading of the experience for everyone.

It's funny to complain about this myself, who has benefitted immensely from this access to information. But who knows, I'd like to think I would be inquisitive and resourceful enough to figure things out without the internet - before my time - but I'd imagine it would've mainly been through someone you know or a book.

Societally, I'd imagine the exposure/health/happiness benefit of more people getting outdoors/visiting our parks/skiing outweighs the negative externalities of crowding for any one individual, but for something like churning I don't think there's really the same argument. The real winners are always the people selling jeans while we're still panning for gold.

Some Alaska updates:

  • Alaska card holders now get 1 free bag on Hawaiian flights (along with 6 guests) when using card. Hawaiian card holder get 2 free bags on Alaska flights when using card.
  • Starting April 24, MVP Gold 75k and 100k get complimentary extra comfort seats at time of booking on main cabin Hawaiian flights
  • Sometime mid summer, Alaska companion fare will work on Hawaiian flights within North America (so not to Japan for example).

Waiting for HA to join OW next year so my AA status gets me free bags

Wonder how much longer amex transfers to HA will last.

I noticed today that EQMs are posting for award flights (including partners) booked and flown earlier this calendar year. I now have MVP status exclusively through partner awards, which is pretty awesome.

When were your flights? I'm still missing stuff from mid Jan. (Partner flight)

So as sapphires have become hot again with the 100k offer, we have been getting some new DPs on the process that have caused me to update the sapphire FYIs. Notably:

  • Looks like the 48 month counter does indeed go from transaction date of the transaction that hit the MSR previously, instead of the statement close date. Its been theorized for a while that was the case but seen multiple DPs of success so I feel it confirms that. Many people probably don't track that closely, so the statement date should be the fallback.
  • Seems the in-branch timeline for PCing out of a sapphire and reapplying is much shorter now, we have seen a couple DPs as short as 2 days, so no more 30 days.

With the successes of the in-branch timeline being as short as 2 days, this also leads me to theorize the online application wait could also be at least that short instead of the 4 days. With the way the MDD died last year, Chase's systems changed to recognize within a day that someone was a sapphire card holder, so it is possible that change could be making the timeline of PCing out of a sapphire and reapplying as short as 1 day. If anyone feels adventurous enough to give it a try, please report DPs whether successful or not. If it fails, it should be fairly low risk as they shouldn't HP you if you are flagged as a current sapphire cardholder.

Oh my god. At first, I was like, “Man, only a real nerd would track that closely. I can’t imagine having a record of my spending that could show me to the day when I officially spent $4k on the card.”

But then I remembered I’ve been tracking on YNAB since way before I got my CSP. This information is totally accessible for me, which feels crazy.

Just PC'd out of a sapphire - open to being adventurous and trying the online app tomorrow. If it fails, when's the earliest I could reapply?

1

u/garettg SEA | PAE 12h ago

Did you try? What was the outcome?

1

u/microwavedballs BOS 12h ago

Didn’t end up trying, ended up deciding to wait for referral links to come out for p2 to refer

u/garettg SEA | PAE 11h ago

Probably just as well, there is a DP today that after 2 days someone still got the “has a sapphire” denial without HP, so it seems we are still in that territory where less than 4 days gives random results.

u/garettg SEA | PAE 2d ago

Someone else might speak better to that, but if there is no HP I believe you can just apply again a few days later, dont think you have to wait 30 days or anything like that.

1

u/Peeweehell 1d ago

FWIW a chase rep advised to wait 30-40 days for it to “work its way out of the system.” Could be complete BS, idk. I waited a few months in that instance
