Humor / Meme What's the most unique excuse you've heard for leaving a raid?

A few years back (can't remember the exact raid, version, or server), we were midway through a raid after downing a couple of bosses. Suddenly, one of our newer guild members, a gnome mage, if I recall correctly., chimes in on voice chat: "Sorry guys, I need to go. My girlfriend has just shaved."

We were all a bit confused at first, but then it hit us. Booty call had higher priority than the raid. It became an instant classic in our guild and gave us some great laughs.

You got any good ones?

Not an actual excuse, but a running joke among my old group was "gotta go guys my power just went out"

We had a guy during classic, who also raided retail. We're in Karazan, and he logs. Goes on discord to say his power went out and posts a video of his lights off, except...

Lights were on at his neighbours in the video he posted, and his discord displayed what game he was playing (retail), without the mobile icon.

This was his second bail, he had also quit a Kara raid 2 weeks prior because, and I quote:"my dog is shitting all over the place".

He also left once just after moroes to "go get weed" and didn't come back until we were on netherspite.

I gkicked him the next day. There were smarter cookies in my cookie jar.

We had a guy talk to Varien in ICC and fuck up the ICC buff for a week. We tried to soldier on, but it was impossible and we decided to break for the week. We had had a couple of pugs that week, so we thought for sure it was one of them. We posted an officer next to Varien the next week and made a weak aura that, if it detected the buff missing, would announce it and every toon would announce their whereabouts in raid chat.
Anyway, two bossed in our TANK announces that he has just decided he wasn't a good fit with us any more. He'd been with us like a year at that point. He said he just wasn't having fun any more. So he gquit in the middle of a pull. He was the one who had SABOTAGED 24 other raiders the week before because "he just wasn't feeling it" any more.

Yikes!

To be fair, if he bailed twice for schedule, and you had a spare tank, you'd gkick him.

To be fair I’ve had my power go out, and then I continue to play on my laptop with a hotspot.

Iirc retail had dropped a content patch that night (we raided Tuesdays & Wednesdays) and he wanted to do that more then raid Kara with us. His retail guild was probably raiding out of schedule to get a drop on the new content.

But like, just tell us that bro, we're all gamers here.

1

u/drae- Dec 03 '24

Actually he came back just in time for the only boss I needed him for lol.

I regularly get thunder that takes my power out. For that reason i also have a backup battery that powers my computer for about 10 min, so that i can save work/games or god forbid run to safety in HC. So I've used this excuse exactly for more than one raid.

we had a power fail last winter from lightning strike in the middle of our village, nearly everything that was connected to overhead electricity or phone cables were destroyed. Our telly pc/motherboard, landline router were fried. took a week to get all the cables outside repaired. everything in house was paid for by the electricity and phone companies. A poor bloke next to the strike had to renew even the wiring. I was still connected with mobile discord in the raid we were!!

2

u/Onuva_42 Dec 03 '24

Sounds like I'm the lucky one!

1

u/Mr0BVl0US Dec 03 '24

I don't think it's the thunder that takes your power out, but probably the lightning :)

Name checks out! You're right, I apologise.

Was going to say this. In most cases it's probably a joke, but it's very possible with the existence of UPSs.

u/leshpar Dec 03 '24

Now I actually can and have used this excuse and meant it. I have an ups (uninterruptible power supply) connected to my computer and modem. With both on it lasts for roughly 45 minutes, but if I shut my computer down it'll keep the modem powered for 5 hours. That's what I'll usually do. I don't get a cell phone signal at home because I live in the middle of nowhere, but I can still get online and make phone calls and stuff as long as the net remains up.

Also, living in the middle of nowhere, we do get a lot of random power outages due to trees falling on power lines.

Welcome to the wifi calling or nothing club. Population us.

2

u/Rahvanox Dec 04 '24

How big is your UPS that it lasts for 45 minutes? That's wild yo. Mine lasts for 10 minutes with the PC and monitor alone.

33

u/Bmorg2014 Dec 03 '24

I get the joke. But... I've done that a few times before. PC on UPS - battery backup only lasts a few minutes

During wrath classic I had such a frustrating togc raid I actually just unplugged the internet and texted from my phones discord that I dc’ed

'Questing in a cave' before an altf4

3

u/ProfessorMiserable58 Dec 03 '24

We were doing a alt run in MC on SoD a few weeks ago and just before we were about to pull rag my power went out.... finally manged to boot up my laptop and make a hotspot from my phone only to see them distribute all the sweet loot I could not partake in....

2

u/mtlguy1982 Dec 03 '24

During vanilla I actually used that. And sadly it was true. The power at my rural home was so spotty, that I had a no breaker with the modem and computer plugged in it. It would be enough for 15 min. And it saved me from countless disconnects from the power tripping.

1

u/Slagathor0 Dec 03 '24

No excuse. I played using a generator after hurricane Sandy.

1

u/Millerbomb Dec 03 '24

were we in the same guild, i think it was like 3 weeks in a row 1 or 2 people had "power" issues

1

u/AllBrainsNoSoul Dec 03 '24

I love it because I have backup batteries for my PC and for my modem/router. The battery is big enough to keep my internet/router up for 1-2 hours without power, and my PC for 10-20 minutes.

1

u/xBirdisword Dec 03 '24

Old fav of mine is ‘brb pool on fire again’.

1

u/Shampoomooo Dec 03 '24

I get the joke but for many people including me, it's a real possibility. PC and internet on a backup power bank just incase 😁.

1

u/IfarmExpIRL Dec 03 '24

we actually had a guy in one of our guild say "you guys think my power is going to go out" and then he was disconnected by each service he was on one by one

now we can hear the thunderclap in the background but it was still hilarious and made for a great meme when one of us had to leave discord

1

u/ShooterOfCanons Dec 03 '24

Sounds like when my wife wants to stop talking on the phone she'll go "hey we're about to enter a tunnel FYI" then just hangs up 🤣

1

u/Mr0BVl0US Dec 03 '24

Yeah, we had one that was "Gotta go, my goldfish is on fire" because we literally just got sick and tired of people leaving raids or just not showing up for them.

1

u/Born-Entrepreneur Dec 04 '24

I did this legit, once. Computer and monitor on a UPS backup, internet was dialup. Said bye and shut down before the battery ran out.

1

u/Blindbru Dec 04 '24

Our running "gotta go" line is "oh shit, my brother has a knife".

1

u/HDT94 Dec 04 '24

Are you from South Africa by any chance?

0

u/Pink_Slyvie Dec 03 '24

Ok, but don't all run a UPS? I have a good 10 minutes with my PC on after power goes off. Ideally I want to turn it off ASAP, as wifi will run for hours.

1

u/mgtriffid Dec 03 '24

PC is PC but you also need one for your router, or have them connected to the same UPS.

1

u/Pink_Slyvie Dec 03 '24

I have 2, One for the network closet, but it only lasts about 10-15 minutes. If I expect a longer outage, I shutdown the PC ASAP, and move the larger one to the closet.

I plan on getting a full solar battery setup sometime soon, if it stays affordable, but given recent news, it might not be.

0

u/Acidyo Dec 03 '24

Maybe he lived somewhere where that happens often so he was using a UPS

1

u/pollut3r Dec 03 '24

Maybe you misread the comment.

0

u/Cool_Potential_4738 Dec 03 '24

They wouldn't be able to write that if the power went off...

1

u/pollut3r Dec 03 '24

... that's the joke.
