I never did it myself, but there is charm in launching the game as a human warrior male.
Warcraft 3 footmen were that close to converting me
86
u/nukularyammie Feb 16 '25
Funny.. I went dwarf hunter - not because of the art on the box or the cinematic, but because they’re riflemen and I played a lot of pally-rifle in WC3
25
u/iiNexius Feb 17 '25
That was me when I chose tauren. Sure, the tauren look quite different from humans, but they're still pretty similar. As a native kid playing WC3, when I saw a lot of my culture in them, I was drawn to playing one in WoW lol.

I usually went archmage + blood mage with riflemen + casters.
Man, WC3 was such a good game, and it made the idea of playing a single unit in a huge, open world seem like such an amazing concept.

u/cseymour24 Feb 17 '25
I tried to be different. I went gnome because I'm 6'6" and mage because I cannot do magic.

u/McFake_Name Feb 17 '25
Horde will say this, then the second belfs are available they are the pick by miles from BC through retail
29
11
u/Stamts Feb 17 '25
but Belfs are the most played race in all the variations of wow.
that means that a lot of Lord of the Rings alliance roleplayers re-rolled Blood Elf as well.
7
u/MattEadesismyWaifu Feb 17 '25
Only rolled a pally coz I couldn't. That's the only anime char I made.
12
u/Individual-Light-784 Feb 17 '25
Blood Elves were the perfect insert for horde and nobody can change my mind
Apart from the obvious aesthetic variety they bring, their lore and style is just cool as fuck. And Blood Elf paladins are such a badass fit.

also you have classes as magical as there can be. I pick warrior.

u/Whosebert Feb 16 '25
"i wanna be an archer!!"
"oh you want like a Lil animal guy with you too?"
"no im pretty sure i never mentioned any animals just the archery please!"
"well anyways here's your animal!!"
"....."
11
u/Akhillez_ Feb 17 '25
Same.
In my opinion (not that it helps classic at all) they should have reworked Rogue combat into a ranged archer assassin instead of pirate whatever it is now. My only wish is for some form of classic+ where they add a lonewolf option to hunter. I've always wanted to play either an archer or spear/shield warrior spec, one can only dream.
8
u/Tuskor13 Feb 17 '25
An Agility scaling, ranged weapon using rogue would just be a worse Hunter.
Also Lone Wolf is something that would only really work in a raid, leveling as a Hunter with no pet, a deadzone, and no moving as you Auto Shot sounds completely miserable. It's like leveling from 1 to 10 but forever.
-3
u/ItsMatoskah Feb 17 '25
But it is pretty near real life. If you fight a lion you can get one or two good shots, if he is in melee range you should switch to melee weapons. Can't even try to parry with a bow, gun or crossbow and you can not go sneaky archer like in skyrim, would be a little overpowered.
11
u/Tuskor13 Feb 17 '25
But it is pretty near real life
Literally every hunter race is a non human, why does realism need to matter there? And you wouldn't be getting in a couple melee attacks, it would be the majority of your time fighting something. There's a reason Beast Mastery is the best Hunter spec when leveling. A Hunter fighting in Melee range might as well be a Warrior with no abilities other than a worse Heroic Strike.
Plus my whole point was that a Rogue using a Bow as their primary weapon would legitimately just be worse Hunter. Since Ranged Rogue doesnt have their own personal tank to keep mobs out of the deadzone.
1
u/Devious_TaKaTa Feb 17 '25
There's a chance for blizzard's classic+ if classic+ private servers get enough traction in this department I guess.
The classic team certainly have already taken inspiration from some. I'm pretty sure what you wish for is available there so sooner rather than later ig.
1
u/LeXu Feb 17 '25
I've always wanted to play either an archer or spear/shield warrior spec, one can only dream.
Let me sell you a game called Lord of the Rings Online
2
u/acrazyguy Feb 17 '25
Modern marksman is such a cop-out. They should have made an entire class focused on getting the most out of archery/guns and then left the hunter to be a mix of their weapons and their pet
5
u/Vio94 Feb 17 '25
I initially mained warrior because of the thought "it would be great to be a completely unmagical being able to stand toe to toe with godlike entities."
1
u/Michelanvalo Feb 17 '25
Dunno what you're talking about, Thunder Clap is a nature spell. We're in touch with the Earth Mother.

u/Sarinacken Feb 16 '25
Me, a night elf priest on a robot chicken 🤓
6
u/trpclshrk Feb 17 '25
I just want to be pretty or cool looking (to me). That leaves Nelf or borderline undead right now. Belf is my holdout for a paladin every time though. Dranei best shaman. I’d be huge Worgen player when they finally get in.
Human males look awful to me. Females are aight. I can settle for human female, but I prefer an elf variety (or Worgen)
-1
u/bigwangersoreass Feb 17 '25
Imo belf nelf and UD look horrendous but I know I’m in the minority because I only play female trolls, orcs, taurens or if I do go alliance it’s a female dwarf for sure.

Honestly, one of the most fun TTRPG characters I have ever played was a human fighter in 5e. I just gave him a big hammer and the personality of Kronk from The Emperor's New Groove and had him BÖNK for about 3 solid years of goofy fun.
That being said, dwarves are the best. I'd fight you over that, but I'd much rather just discuss it over a pint
14
8
u/Gukle Feb 16 '25
Vanilla maybe, but most classic bros only picked human for the sword racial.
2
u/Howrus Feb 16 '25
I pick up female human because I could create a Saber Pendragon.

15
u/UregMazino Feb 16 '25
I play ally warlock. I dont wanna be a gnome or dwarf. Sadly nelf cant be wlock. Only 1 option left.
12
u/Omegawylo Feb 17 '25
Dwarf can’t either lol. But! Fun fact: the manual has them listed as being able to play as mages. But it was dropped before launch because devs felt class variety in was already high enough for alliance

u/AdDesigner1153 Feb 17 '25 edited Feb 18 '25
When the world is filled with foul monsters, the worship of false idols and the practise of all manner of degenerate magic, it takes a human warrior with conviction and a strong arm to purge the filth

Trolls are technically the native races of Azeroth, Elves are just mutated Trolls.
So either of those races are the correct choice 😉
30
9
u/Howrus Feb 16 '25
Same with dwarfs and gnomes, what are technically predate trolls\elves. Earthens\mechagnomes were created first by Titans.
8
u/Beardless_fatty Feb 17 '25
Not same, you even said so yourself: troll/elves (and tauren) = natural, human/undead/dwarf/gnome = mutated creations.
Orcs are imported defective earth elementals.
6
u/Howrus Feb 17 '25
human/undead/dwarf/gnome = mutated creations.
I wouldn't call humans\dwarfs\gnomes a "mutated creation", more like "evolution". And undead - devolution.
3
u/Beardless_fatty Feb 17 '25
Well, they kinda are, what with the whole "Curse of flesh" thing going on
1
u/m45onPC Feb 17 '25
humans/dwarves/gnomes were created by the titans. While humans evolved from the vrykul (which were created by the titans and afflicted by the curse of flesh) the other races didnt really evolve into anything really. You could maybe make a point with different dwarf clans which have vastly different appearances but they are ultimately the same species.
Vrykul are a different species from humans though pretty much.
And obviously undead are just humans that died when arthas turned evil.
1
1
u/Fun_Shelter_9587 Feb 17 '25
isnt there literally wotlk lore about how vrykuls gave birth to humans and they were killed for being cursed or something? so humans are part of the species evolutionary tree.
0
u/Immagonko Feb 17 '25 edited Feb 17 '25
Humans are too..
Orcs are on another hand are immigrants along with Draenei
2
u/RedRayBae Feb 17 '25
Humans are not naturally of Azeroth, neither are Dwarves or Gnomes.
They were created, Trolls are the natural occurring race on Azeroth. Everything else is either created, immigrants or mutations of Trolls (Elves)
1
u/Chesarae Feb 17 '25
'native' is tied to the races' origin point, not the first race on the planet.
Trolls one of the original races of Azeroth, which puts them in the same camp as much of the wildlife.
Humans/gnomes/dwarves are native to Azeroth, because they were created there.
A race will, rightfully, call their 'native land' the land upon which their race (or culture) originated. Whether or not there were other races present has no bearing on this definition.
1
u/RedRayBae Feb 18 '25
'native' is tied to the races' origin point, not the first race on the planet.
Native being naturally born of Azeroth in this sense. Pick what word you want to use to describe it.
Trolls one of the original races of Azeroth, which puts them in the same camp as much of the wildlife.
Humans/gnomes/dwarves are native to Azeroth, because they were created there.
Natural to Azeroth vs Native to Azeroth then.
1
u/Chesarae Feb 18 '25
That can work I suppose. Trolls being both natural and native to Azeroth, while other races would simply be native.
-2
u/Immagonko Feb 17 '25
Nope humans are native to Azeroth
3
u/RedRayBae Feb 17 '25
They were created, humans are the results of Old Gods and Titan meddeling. They aren't natrually born from Azeroth like Trolls and other native species are.
That beginning of the paragraph on the wiki is incorrect.
-1
u/Immagonko Feb 17 '25
😂
4
u/RedRayBae Feb 17 '25
You're literally the only one in here disagreeing. This is a commonly known WoW fact.
-1
u/Immagonko Feb 17 '25
No proofs — no deal 😁
4
u/RedRayBae Feb 18 '25
The proof is in the wiki link you provided.
They are just incorrect with their wordage. Humans/Dwarves/Gnomes are natural to Azeorth like Trolls are. It literally says in your link.
4
u/BestNails Feb 16 '25
I will always be a horde fan and my favorite race is Orc/maghar Orc but I do like that humans look good in all armors especially since all armor is model on them first
2
u/Beardless_fatty Feb 17 '25
On retail that's the main reason I created a human monk alt. Even named him "Abs" and tend to transmog him shirtless often.
13
u/References_Paramore Feb 16 '25
Sometimes it’s nice to be the grounded and familiar character in a world full of monsters.
Like, do people watch LotR and not like Aragorn?
12
u/The_Highl0rd Feb 17 '25
None of my homies like the pinnacle of positive masculinity. A true brother, captain and king. With a cool and awesome named sword, that even got an army of ghosts at his side and fought for mankind at its darkest hour against an army of vzritable monsters, then got to marry a beautiful elven lady. Not to mention him being the epitome of honour and the only human that resisted the one ring when offered.
Then again all my homies look like Gollum.

Fantasy of murdering dumb green monsters as a glorious human doesnt seem too bad, better than rp as zugs that dont even have shoes living in mudhuts in a cavern

You fantasize about racial supremacy and genocide? Seems quite on brand for human players.

If you wish to top dps, you cannot pick a year other race as melee.

I remember when I first started classic, my dad got me a Brady Games guide book with the game. I saw forsaken and I was sold.... Right up until I saw trolls got a raptor mount.
I still main Troll (Zandalari now) just with a high def dinosaur mount

u/LordDShadowy53 Feb 16 '25

And when I play the Alliance is Night Elves and Humans

Dwarves have a long history of being associated with fantasy so I’d throw them some credit too. Gnomes on the other hand…
7

I hear there's a few fantasy books where the main character is smaller than a dwarf. Can't quite remember it though.

My thinking has always been that humans get a 10% rep bonus and rep grinds have historically been a fairly important part of the game. As such, by choosing human I’m literally saving time to do other things either in or outside of the game. I’ll take that over anything else offered by the other races.
Oh and humans look kinda silly on many other mounts in the game.
1
u/PK_Dreadlord Feb 19 '25
I see people say this a lot , but for Classic , if you can do 90% of a rep-grind surely you can finish the last 10%. I guess if you keep playing iteration of Fresh after Fresh classic Diplomacy does add up in total time saved if you always play Human.
1
u/mayonetta Feb 17 '25
Literally me. Tabards and armor are designed around the human male model and look most aesthetic on them. And horses are the most symmetrical aesthetically pleasing mounts, headless horseman's mount is my all time favourite mount in the game.
1
u/aManHasNoUsername99 Feb 17 '25
Human cause it represents you. Tiger cause it’s cool. Human lands cause they are cooler than huts and trees.
1
u/Luvs_to_drink Feb 17 '25
Anyone that picks horse as theyre preferred mount over the zg tiger is a complete idiot.
If I played alliance Id grind the rep for the NE faction just to buy the discount version of the tiger as backup to rng
1
u/AbsolutlyN0thin Feb 17 '25
Personally I like my fire pony more than the zg tiger. Even now in Cata dread steed is still my choice of ground mount, imo it just looks so cool.
Also un related, but taurans on horses are pretty funny, so I support those of them who choose that option
1
u/Shameless_Catslut Feb 17 '25
I could never bring myself to play Human in WoW because they're not voiced by Bill Roper.
1
u/Soggy_Association491 Feb 17 '25
Since people upvoting this thread agreed that wow is a fantasy RPG then they should be ok with people playing as mercenary and demanding gold for running dungeon right?
1
u/bugsy42 Feb 17 '25
Just put the sword specialisation to gnomes and everybody is a gnome. Meta dictates what measlaves play.

Lots of human male warriors and paladins are weak and insecure IRL. This is just a way to compensate.
1
u/grethro Feb 17 '25
I don’t want to pretend to pretend to be someone else. I want to pretend to be somewhere else.
1
u/calicatnz Feb 17 '25
I'm fairly certain I have never played a human ever, like I don't think I've ever done the elwyn forest quest.
1
u/MoistCucumber Feb 18 '25
Have you guys heard about this Kingdom Come game? They literally made an entire game about being a human male warrior
1
-6
u/Sunofamitch Feb 16 '25
I've never understood picking humans or human like races in high fantasy games. Like there is kingdom come deliverance for the medival sim. It's a fantasy game I don't want to play a shlubby human im that irl
4
u/patjs92 Feb 16 '25
Human lore in Warcraft at least is really cool, their backstory is anything but boring.
14
u/c4kie Feb 16 '25
So play a great human instead? Idk why people never seem to have heard of a power fantasy before haha
11
u/Suspicious_War_9305 Feb 16 '25
This is gunna blow your mind, but in those high fantasy games those humans generally have super powers and/or spells.
11
u/sweetpapisanchez Feb 16 '25
There is no greater power fantasy than being a badass human who fights off demons, dragons, undead and worse with nothing but his skill and steel.
6
u/revolution23x Feb 16 '25
This is such a simple minded way of thinking. I feel so bad for people like you.
3
u/Howrus Feb 16 '25
I've never understood picking humans or human like races in high fantasy games.
So Conan the Barbarian is a "shubby human"? :] Or a He-Man? You completely miss the point of "power fantasy".
King's Honor, friend.

u/Ilrador Feb 17 '25
Well, yeah. It's difficult to in character RP when you're an ugly, snaggle-toothed orc, or a hideous and creepy Gnome.

I make fun of this to my friends all the time. Plus I hate the alliance all their races are tall human, medium sized human, small human. For the Horde!
2
u/angryungulate Feb 16 '25
Blue human. Short fat bearded human
1
u/Dighty Feb 16 '25
Short, fat, bearded human describes me perfectly - I main a dwarf. Thanks for the introspective crisis.
3
u/angryungulate Feb 17 '25
In my DND campaign there was a short fat bearded human that would get pissed when everyone assumed he was a dwarf, it was hilarious
-5
u/revolution23x Feb 16 '25
I’m sure you place a hunched back green human..
3
u/Patience-Due Feb 17 '25
Nah a Tauren shaman a massive hoofed beast with horns and tribal esthetic that matches well with totems. Human is the Ugg boots basic bitches of wow.

I said it once and I will say it once again, put my banner there and die on this hill. In the world full of towering heaps of muscle, hyperadvanced midgets, magically gifted freaks of all kinds nothing is cooler than being a regular human that uses only his cold steel to overcome the odds. The indomitable human spirit shall prevail!

u/Gullible-Fix6454 Feb 16 '25
I would love to play gnome mage, they look really cool. but ive played Human Male paladin for 20 years

u/opebigyikes Feb 16 '25
Human male casters are the worst. No way they’d be that buff reading books in a tower all day.
