What should we call California’s currency?

I vote for “Oso,” which is Spanish for bear. It works on multiple levels. Sounds similar to peso, reflects the Spanish history of the country, and of course, bear. Also, I’d like to propose that no bills or coins have depictions of humans on them. Rather, the oso should have scenes of California’s natural beauty, works of art from notable Californians, and local architecture.

What are your opinions?

I think we should just use the Euro. Why not? Should help us with our trading partners. It's often valued higher than the dollar. Keeps us from dealing with a volatile new currency.

As long as it’s not crypto, idc.

There’s pluses and minuses for both approaches. Biggest drawback to single use of the Euro in my mind is not having any economic impact or contribution to the controlling board for it. With our economy, we should have a very large say in how our currency is managed.

Unless I misunderstand how it’s governed. Which is entirely possible. I’m not an economist.

This makes me think of the book " I love you as big as California." It's a children's picture book depicting various natural beauties in CA and wildlife

Sounds good to me! I’ve got some fun questions though!

What should we make it out of?

What increments should there be? (Like America has pennies = 0.01, nickels = 0.05, dimes = 0.10, etc). I don’t think the EU does 0.01 though (could be wrong tho!)

Should we include coins or only have dollars? (We could still prolly make a paper dollar that includes fractional numbers. It would prolly be cheaper than using non-renewable metals for a low-value money, again could be wrong tho)

Somewhat related, but along with this can we vote that prices of things include the taxes 😭 I hate going to stores and seeing that something is $19.99 but with taxes it’s like $25 💀 it feels hella scam-y to me!

I think it should be a mix of coins and bills, pretty much like the Euro. Especially making them all different physical sizes.

And yeah, all prices should include tax. My girlfriend (who’s British) spent a week in Vegas a few years ago and was very surprised and upset that the advertised rates didn’t include taxes and fees.

I care less about what it's called and more about how it's backed.

What is it tied to? How is inflation/deflation managed? How is it distributed? etc..

Also, if CA gets its independence, what happens to all the folks dependent on Social Security and/or disability income?

Call it the Sun. For obvious reasons, but also because it fits in with East Asian currencies (won, yuan, yen). One Sun could be divided into 100 Rays.

Dollars. Everyone knows what a dollar is. It will have to be called California Dollars like we have Australian Dollars and Canadian Dollars.
