Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom at the climax of Who Framed Roger Rabbit before and after the animation was put over his face.

He scared the everlovin snotberries out of me when I was younger.

He actually gave me a fear of cartoonish killers that’s why i hate ART the clown

u/Beerasaurwithwine 6d ago
His eyes used to terrify me so bad...used to think I saw them when it was dark. I actually have a visceral fear of clowns...but for some reason Art the Clown is the only one I'm not afraid of.
6
u/Oli_VK 6d ago
Complete opposite for me, clowns bother me none but that thing… idk, fucks with me. That’s fair though the eyes were absolutely the stuff of nightmares, cartoonish crazy eyes on a real person basically, to showcase he reached what he wanted and it made him go mad.

u/Beerasaurwithwine 6d ago
The terrifier movies give me the giggles so hard, I can actually watch them by myself. Most horror movies I can't watch by myself because I'm a chickenshit. I can't even deal with clown art or real clowns..I have passed out from fear a couple of times when I came face to face with clowns...as an adult.

The Dip traumatised me. I want to watch it with my kids, but once they’re in their 20s.
3
u/Beerasaurwithwine 5d ago
Thank you for awakening a childhood trauma. I had forgotten that part. I cried so hard. After we watched it, my Dad announced we were going to go for a dip in the neighbors pool. He did not understand why I got hysterial.

The terrified look on Bob Hoskins' face seals it for me.

The bit where it shows you Eddie's POV as Doom waves a circular saw in his face is up there too.

That really does still haunt me too. I logically know it’s a cartoon, but I still can’t get over the hurt.

I loved Lloyd’s take on this character, with its switch from menace to manic threat. I was always a little bummed we never got a movie reveal of the full animated character.
Also, it’s my favorite bit of trivia from this movie that Tim Curry auditioned for this role but was rejected as being too frightening.

u/Whiteoutlist 6d ago
I just listened to that YouTube video that was a deep dive into the making of who framed Roger rabbit. They also mentioned that the cloverleaf storyline was lifted from a proposed sequel to Chinatown.

There’s a popular theory that he’s Pistol Packin’ Possum, a character we see a poster of in RK Maroon’s office, since he has the same red eyes and at one point his gun lines up perfectly with Doom’s.
14
u/Vince_Clortho042 6d ago
I remember at one point he was going to be revealed as the hunter that killed Bambi's mother, but someone high up at Disney (probably either Eisner or Katzenberg) overrode that.
13
u/SummerAndTinkles 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yeah, it was mostly because it conflicted with the idea of toons being actors.
6
u/whiteboypizza 5d ago
I’ve loved this theory ever since I first read about it because it raises some interesting questions about his underlying motivation. Maybe PPP was the original Maroon Cartoon star before Roger and Baby Herman stole his spotlight, which drove him off the deep end? That’s always been my idea anyway.
In the end I do like how mysterious Doom is; we never find out who he is or where he came from. You assume at first he’s doing it for money, but why does a Toon need money? Why is he cool with genocoding his own race just to build a freeway? He’s psychotic even by Toon standards. He’s so much fun
16
u/ImaginaryMastadon 6d ago
That’s true, Mickey Mouse asks, ‘I wonder who he really was’ but it’s too late, as the dip has melted his toon form and now we’ll never know!

u/Mortis_XII 6d ago
That movie is still held highly as an animation+live action marvel

u/Mottis86 6d ago
We will never get anything like it ever again, sadly. I'm happy to be born just at the right time to see this movie as a kid.

The reason for black and white is that to correctly overlay the animation elements for the entire film, the easiest way was to create monochrome blowups of each frame. Also, workprints were still often in black and white anyways to save costs, so it wouldn't be too different in editing. They also shot anything intended for animation or effects in VistaVision, to make up for the extra generations of film needed for a final composite.

In college I took some broadcast/video production courses around the time file-based capture was taking hold, but the field was still figuring out how to transition from offline tape workflows. Got me really interested in reading about how cinema was edited (which was not 100% digital for feature films until surprisingly recently). This is fascinating stuff, and really gives you an appreciation for the craft if you've only ever put together something with NLE.

This guy is one of the forgotten actors of our lifetimes. He goes all out on every role he does and gets relatively little credit.
He’s 86…not sure how much time or how many roles he has left. But enjoy them! It’s hard not to.
16
u/The_Autarch 6d ago
He was almost too iconic as Doc Brown. Dude got hyper-typecast to one role and was never given much of an opportunity to do anything else.
11
u/ItsDominare 6d ago
He was great as Professor Plum in Clue (as was everyone else in that gem of a movie).

Met him at FACTS in Ghent, Belgium once. Asked him to sign my Back to the Future vinyl cover.
Whilst signing I told him “Thank you for making me be in absolute awe whilst watching Back to the Future. Also thank you for the horrific nightmares you gave me after watching you portray Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit…”
He snickered and said “You’re quite welcome”
Such a kind man!

Christopher Lloyd??
Underrated??
Hi, I'd like to know about this fantastic alternative reality you're living in

u/The_Autarch 6d ago
I dunno, it seems accurate when you think about it. Hollywood stopped giving him iconic roles after The Addams Family movies. Dude's been steadily working since then, but it's mostly bit parts and cameos.
1
u/MysteriousWon 6d ago
Yeah. I think recent generations would probably know him most as one of the creative minds behind Modern Family. But even then, I doubt a lot would even be able to put a face to the name if they weren't already aware of him from like Back to the Future or something.

It was my favorite movie in 3rd grade. I had the VHS tape and there was movie day at school. I brought it to school. The teacher said it had to be reviewed to be able to show it. So she gave it to the principal. I never got it back. I think back and it was a dumb idea. Being in a Catholic school and the principal was a nun. Prolly not too fond of Jessica Rabbit.

When he stuck that toon shoe into that vat of acid or whatever it was...that messed me up.

the thought that we almost got Tim Curry to star as Judge Doom would make this image more terrifying

This shit scared the hell out of me as a kid and still unnerves me today. The concept of living adjacent to 'toons' whose only concept of death is a punchline is terrifying.

And Eddie's horrified reaction. Bob Hoskins deserved Oscar props for that film since he was basically talking to thin air for most of the shoot.

Judge Doom was the character that made me realize that the same actor could do both good and bad guys, watched it with my father after BttF and was convinced until this scene that Doom was being duped somehow and that the bad guy was going to be someone else entirely.

u/TenTwoMeToo 6d ago
This movie is responsible for one of the most traumatizing cinematic moment of my childhood... When that poor Toon shoe was killed in The Dip 😟😟😟

God, he's such a great actor. He gave me the creeps when I saw his character pop up. The shoe scene burning in my head along this scene up to the melting part.

u/PhilthyPunk 5d ago
I always thought the teeth were animated aswell but it makes sense that they're physical props, it be a lot to animate the teeth moving with the mouth and lining it up.

Judge Doom, his 2nd scariest role. His scariest role was, of course, portraying himself in Food Fight.
