Gallery Accidentaly bought more resistors than intended....

Post image

So I sort of bought all the resistors here by ordering 3 times and forgetting about the first 2 times. Atleast they are not all the same value. Altough i bought double the sets on 2w. Atleast i wont need too be buying resistors anytime soon.

When you buy from China, you either buy more than required intentionally or accidentally. 😀

It's such a good deal, how could I resist?

u/diseasealert 5d ago

Just make sure you have enough capacity.

On wire-wound, yeah, carbon comp. and metal film, not so much...

Yes, happens with me as well.

ah you punned before me, how dare ya 😜

I've reached the level of hoarder.
some actually have speculated that I am stocked better than some local electronics retailers :D

1

u/One-Comfortable-3963 3d ago

It's proven many times that the day after my hoarders brain finally let go of some items me or someone else needs it.

But even when you are stocked up pretty nicely you need to order stuff you don't have.

...oh 3 boxes are even cheaper and if I order 2 of those extra it's free shipping!

1

u/jan_itor_dr 3d ago

completely agree with you ...
and the ammount of sunday evening or middle of the night panic calls "maybe you have that, xxxx broke, and I need to fix it asap " . Heck, most of the times , I have had tyhat spare.
however, whenever I design something, I soon run into that i might not have some correct rf transistor, or appropriate TVS diodes etc.

Couldn’t resist the urge?

14

u/Whyjustwhydothat 5d ago

It was so cheap and I forgot I allteady orderd....

12

u/mickdavies556 5d ago

Ohm man I’ve been there

2

u/MistCLOAKedMountains 4d ago

But can it resist a surge?

1

u/BurrowShaker 2d ago

I see no thermistor. Not cool.

20

u/ChocolateFit9026 5d ago

10k is the value, not the quantity! /s

1

u/BurrowShaker 2d ago

Sometimes when you buy reels, values and quantities match :)

BOM simplification. Series parallel your way to every value.

u/agent_kater 5d ago

I kind of do this, I only buy E3.

u/Whyjustwhydothat 5d ago

Haha just my thoughts aswell.

Wanna send me some ressistors? My address is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C.

3

u/sto_redd 5d ago

You're totally right.

Resistance starts there.

3

u/jan_itor_dr 4d ago

I wanted to check that addess. the "1" did not coppy

nice :D

6

u/Ifonlyihadausername 5d ago

I know a guy who accidentally ordered 5000 reels of resistors instead of a reel of 5000

2

u/Whyjustwhydothat 5d ago

Ohm. Well he will not need any in the near future if he actually bought them.

1

u/BurrowShaker 2d ago

That's of the order of half a million USD of resistors. Most likely they were either sent back or a rep called to confirm.

Interestingly enough, would be only about 20 medium cardboard boxes.

1

u/lasmuxDev 1d ago

Yeah, there's no way that order went through.

1

u/BurrowShaker 1d ago

Big enough assembly house, could happen. Supplier would be surprised that a single reference is ordered though.

3

u/prosper_0 5d ago

shipping costs way more than the components. And I use resistors by the dozens in most projects. So I have reels (what, like 5000?) of 0604s in a lot of common values. I dont like/use THT as often, but I still have 1000pc of 1/8W resistors in each of the E6 series.

2

u/ceojp 5d ago

Seriously.

Instead of buying assortments, I'll order what I need for a project, but order probably 100x what I need(at least for passives). There's a pretty good chance my next project will be pretty similar(design-wise) to previous projects, so the parts won't go to waste.

1

u/harexe 4d ago

That's also my go to way, resistors and MLCCs are so cheap on LCSC, especially if you buy >100 so it doesn't really make a noticeable difference in price for my project, since shipping is mostly more expensive than the parts itself.

1

u/Whyjustwhydothat 5d ago

I'm a newb trying to learn electronics and was thinking of buying some components to have for projects. Just accidentaly orderd way too many resistors. Got any tip on an assortment of components to have so I can make all kind of random projects?

2

u/prosper_0 5d ago
  1. design projects to use parts you already have on hand. dont fall into the trap of ordering a specialized 'perfect' component for a specific task. For resistors, this means you DONT need 1% in every value. For most applications, the next closest value you have on hand is usually OK. Use a 330 instead of a 270. It'll be fiiiiine. Most of the time, at least. Knowing when you must have something specific is an essential skill, instead of always using high precision parts. Do you NEED that precision op amp, or will a 358 work? Do you really NEED every value of every type of capacitor? No.
  2. I think there are lists of essential jellybean components over on eevblog.
  3. Find an organization system that works for you.
  4. Always order spares. For future projects, or plain old f-ups. Especially tiny SMD parts. Drop it on the floor = gone forever.

2

u/prosper_0 5d ago

oh, and when buying from China, ALWAYS test then upon receipt, and be RUTHLESS in claiming refunds when you get parts that aren't what they claim to be. Don't call them 'counterfeit,' - they seem to be sensitive that, but DO show that they arent in spec for what they claimed to be when you bought them.

1

u/Wait_for_BM 4d ago

Do you NEED that precision op amp, or will a 358 work?

While the 358 is cheap, it has a lot of limitations - not too good on driving things towards either rails and limited CMM range that limits its use on low voltage design. Almost any of the jelly beans parts from the last 40 years are better.

1

u/lasmuxDev 1d ago

Only for small quantities. If you're ordering a bunch of ICs at the same time, you'll probably exceed the minimum value for free shipping anyway. Not to say having a large stock of resistors isn't handy anyway. For tweaking values etc.

5

u/LateralThinkerer 5d ago

Those resistors are futile.

I'll see myself out.

4

u/fatjuan 4d ago

I just ordered a truckload of 1 ohm resistors, & just make up the value I need by connecting them in series. I should be finished making my 270K resistor any week now.

1

u/APLJaKaT 2d ago

Hope you don't need a 1 megohm!

STOP RESISTING

3

u/phonemousekeys 5d ago

Ohm my gosh

3

u/6gv5 5d ago

There's no such thing as too much resistance these days, so congrats!

One thing to pay attention to is to keep unused bags well wrapped as many cheap components from China do not use copper anymore for their wires but rather a very thin coating on iron wires (you can check them using a magnet; copper doesn't stick, iron does). They're mostly ok for hobby projects, also often surprisingly accurate, but could tarnish if left for a very long time in the open, so I would keep the unused one tightly closed in their bags.

1

u/Whyjustwhydothat 5d ago

Thanks for the tip!

2

u/twiggs462 5d ago

If you have this many what feasible project could you build with them? Honest question.

2

u/Whyjustwhydothat 5d ago

I guess i could do a stupid low resistance kluster of them. Atleast i will be able to overuse resistors for a while. Make everything using like 2x200 to use as 100 ohm instead of a 100 one. And I could also make alot of custom resistances i guess.

2

u/MrGoogleplex 5d ago

Ohm man. Dunno watt I'd do with all those.

2

u/whateber2 5d ago

Happened to me with cabbages once. I still think fondly of them. Huge bags of em’ eventually they were all eaten.

2

u/a_certain_someon 5d ago

Why such big sizes?

2

u/Whyjustwhydothat 5d ago

Too make sure they will hold. Nah but there are 1/4w aswell. Gonna get more sometime.

2

u/agent_kater 5d ago

I rather wonder what one does with 3W resistors.

2

u/greebo42 5d ago

No matter how many you have, it's all futile anyway ... you will be assimilated!

You can never, EVER have enough resistors

1

u/shadow-ghost-Victor 4d ago

Well, you got two options either you keep them all or you sell the amount that you don’t need or think you need 🤷🤷🤷

1

u/-Brownian-Motion- 4d ago

I hope your reselling capabilities are greater than the new "stock" you received..

1

u/_Solidpoint_ 4d ago

This is the way.

1

u/jiillii 4d ago

make it ressistor array, voltage divider, or 3D resistor cube 😂😂

Aaah, yes- the ol’ “I got drunk and ordered components I forgot about” phenomenon.

1

u/IllustriousCarrot537 3d ago

I can top that...

I accidentally bought 30,000 plastic push in PCB stand-offs.

I've so far used 3...

u/garth54 3d ago

reminds me when I tried to buy a resistor kit (500pc, bunch of different values) from a local electronics store, long time ago. I decided to try their phone ordering so I wouldn't waste time when picking up (going there is always a time suck, and not because of lack of staff).

When I got home, I noticed they gave me 500pc of a single value.

Phoned them back to have this sorted, they said to keep what I had, and that they'd phone me back when it is ready as they were out and would need a day or two to make (I think they build the kits themselves). When I get there to pickup the replacement, the employee came out the back with a big box full of the kits. Seems the person I spoke to wrote '500' in both the description and the quantity field...

I played nice, and took only 1 (they did offer I take 2 for the inconvenience, but I felt bad since I already have the 500pc of 4.7k resistors).

1

u/DartHonor 3d ago

you should buy more

1

u/Real-Edge-9288 3d ago

I bet its because you couldn't resist them 😏😏

ooooh, and these are the expensive kind 😖

At least you can combine them in parallel or in series to get a another resistance value (and therefore a different resistor)

Can you use Ohms Law to convert them into volts or amps to power your device?

1

u/Whyjustwhydothat 5d ago

Barerly. I'm still a bit lost and need too look it upp every now and then.
