Seems like a good place to ask... I just got an old laptop (Dell Latitude 5591, i7, 2019) from my work cause the office staff "need" upgrades. Any suggestions on what to do with it? I was thinking about using it for torrents/media server, but I haven't messed with that kind of stuff in a long time and am a little overwhelmed by all the VPN options/jargon. Any kind people wanna offer some input/guidance?

I wouldn't completely trust the other guy. It's a laptop from 2019. It isn't going to draw that much power.

Check out r/homelab and use the search feature to check out what some folks have done. Just take it slow and learn, and be patient with yourself

Good luck!

Being a beefy old machine it'll suck up more power than a current generation one so if you're concerned about the energy costs leave it off instead of having it run 24x7. If you plan on traveling I'd recommend using TailScale as a personal VPN. Easy to install on mobile devices too.
