Disturbing content Manager had to deal with this at work toaday
This owner left their dog tied to a display, while they shopped. It was 35 and windy. She was about 10ft from the door, that opened every time someone came in or left. She was shivering, looked terrified and sad. The customer took their kid with them. I told my manager that if it were up to me, I would just call the police, as this is animal neglect.
Apparently my manager knew who it was when she saw the dog. She told him he can’t do it again, but given that no consequences were mentioned, I assume it will happen eventually. At least the police would have been able to warn him that if it happens again, he would be charged.

It took me way too long to realize there was a real dog in this photo and you weren’t talking about the toy.

Same. It wasn't until I read your comment and went back to look for the dog that I saw it.

That poor puppy looks so sad. Some people should not be allowed to own animals.

u/marcrich90 15d ago
I would have just walked off with the dog. Its not stealing if its abandoned property.

u/AllyOnAir 14d ago
You’d be charged with theft unfortunately, you have to call the police or ASPCA or something so they can come evaluate the abusive situation because if you just take the dog and it’s chipped and registered to their name you’re in for some legal trouble

u/tagman375 14d ago
Exactly, this is what people don't understand. In most states dogs are considered property, and taking this dog would be no different than stealing someone's purse, trash can, cell phone etc because it was "abandoned". You might also run afoul of some sort of agricultural/livestock laws (dogs aren't livestock most of the time, but I'm meaning livestock in the sense of farm laws)

This is breaking my heart. You can see the sadness in that poor dog's eyes. Poor baby.

This is extremely normal to do here in Europe. As long as you come back everything is fine right?

u/tizzy296 14d ago
35 Fahrenheit is just too cold to leave an animal out for any length of time, in my opinion.
11
u/Big_Fo_Fo 14d ago
Depends on the breed but in this case it’s abuse. My old sheepdog loved snow and cold, I’d be begging her to come in but she’d keep frolicking
6
u/tizzy296 14d ago
Yeah totally! I almost elaborated more about huskies and other winter-loving dogs but then I got lazy haha. There are definitely breeds that don’t mind freezing temps but most wouldn’t be comfortable in 35.

u/Bryozoa 14d ago
It's not even below 0 °C and the dog is INSIDE the shop? Where I lived in Europe it was totally normal to leave the dog outside in the snow to wait and no one will look twice.

I’d be surprised if inside the shop is 35 degrees. This looked like the entrance (outside) of the store. Maybe OP can clarify. But I’d be surprised if they mentioned the temperature outside to complain about the dog being inside.

That's just factually incorrect. It completely depends on the breed. A chihuahua absolutely not but a cobberdog? Yea. A shepherd? Yea. A retriever? Yea. A husky DEMANDS cold weather and some breeds can't sleep indoors because it's too warm
This is standard praxis in Europe where we don't drive to supermarkets. We don't steal each other's dogs either. Cats are let outside in the winter too.

I would have gotten fired that day. Who does this? Absolutely not. I would be losing my shit.

I am glad I didn’t see the owner, because I don’t know what I would have done

u/-mmmusic- 15d ago
this is a normal occurrence in my country, but the dogs are never out if it's too cold, and they're always happy and content with being there!
this is not okay, he at least needs a coat :(

You call whatever animal services you have in your country. Screw the owner as the dog is probably mistreated or neglected at home as well.
Do the dog the favour please.

u/LovecraftsCat65 15d ago
Should have just brought the dog in lol
4
u/-mmmusic- 15d ago
no, that is illegal. this isn't. neither is nice to the dog, they should have just left them at home!!
0
u/LovecraftsCat65 14d ago
It doesn’t matter. Ya they should have left it home but they didn’t and they may not have been able to. It’s just a small dog, it can easily fit in a purse/bag or just in the cart
4
u/-mmmusic- 14d ago
it doesn't matter that it's illegal? they should not go in the cart. it is unsanitary, and even service/assistance animals are not allowed in carts. a purse or bag or just holding him would be more acceptable, but still not allowed (and illegal. a federal crime. it would be seen as faking a service animal in the USA, which is where i think this is?)

u/lesqueebeee 14d ago
i normally i agree with you, but im a firm believer that if youre already a shitty enough person that you chose to bring your dog to the store instead of leaving them home, you SHOULD NOT leave them in the car or anywhere unattended. just bring them in. DONT PUT THEM IN THE CART (thats nasty), and control your damn dog in the store- but it shouldnt have gotten there in the first place. pets dont belong in stores
-2
u/LovecraftsCat65 14d ago
I’m a firm believer in letting people bring their dogs where ever they want lmao But the point is that under the circumstances the best option would have to been to bring the dog inside with them
2
u/Joelle9879 15d ago
IDK where you live but most cops won't do anything about that. You'd need to call animal control, most cops would just say "not my problem" and walk off.

It’s interesting to see that certain behaviour is completely normal in one country and obviously extremely infuriating in others.
Yes, this dog looks miserable. It’s also not the best idea to tie him up in this spot because of the chariots.
In my country, it’s completely normal to see a dog in front of a supermarket. And most of the time they seem pretty content or happy. They just need to be used to it so they know that their owner always comes back. Most of the dogs also really like lots of people giving them attention and telling them that they are a good boy.
I have several family members who take their dogs to the supermarket and they never had any problems.

u/WowIsThisMyPage 14d ago
And right next to the carts inconveniencing everyone including workers and making it terrifying for the dog when people grab/put them back
2
u/Radioactive-Ramba25 14d ago
Especially the ones that stick to each other, and rattle when people try to separate them.
People also just roll them over without looking. They could very well hit the dog

Why did you need to take the dog in. Did you walk to the store because if you didn't, I am pretty sure you can leave your dog in a car as long as it isn't 60 degrees or higher outside or minus 10
4
u/Radioactive-Ramba25 14d ago
You shouldnt leave them inside ever
1
u/Downtown-Falcon-3264 14d ago
So what are they supposed to do? Huh leave them like this?
4
u/Radioactive-Ramba25 14d ago
No. Leave them at home, or leave someone out side with them. Most of the people that I see to leave their dogs in their car have multiple people with them
2
u/Downtown-Falcon-3264 14d ago
You really expect these mouth breathers to be that smart.
It makes sense but your average person normally lacks the brainpower
Sorry I work retail that slipped out

Don’t apologize to me! I just dropped of my brother, and am waiting till my shift starts at 3!

u/frogssmell 13d ago
Its normal to do this with dogs….
0
u/Radioactive-Ramba25 13d ago
Normal, maybe. Right, never

u/Thunbbreaker4 13d ago
Genuine question , are you mad about the treatment of the dog or that someone parks their dog inside the store because it's rude.
1
u/Radioactive-Ramba25 13d ago edited 13d ago
Why not both
I’ve had to move bikes out of the lobby because people are entitled, so moving things out of the lobby has been a thing. My coworker also couldn’t do their job, because they didn’t want to scare the dog, and neither did my manager. I also hate people treating defenseless animals like trash
0
u/Thunbbreaker4 13d ago
I agree with the first part 100%, but keeping a dog inside by a door when it’s not even freezing outside is not treating it like trash lol leaving it unattended in a public place is shitty behavior for sure, but being upset about the dog being too cold inside a building when it’s not even freezing outside is equally fucking insane

u/mangoisNINJA 15d ago
This is more or less appropriate for something like human-free or anti-human, it's not the dog's fault people are shit
-6
u/Woodbirder 15d ago
In a way you are right, and those subs are about that not the animal
4
u/mangoisNINJA 15d ago
Oh so those subreddits are "people are shitty for the way they treat animals"?
-5
u/Woodbirder 15d ago
For having animals. There are many reasons why per ownership is wrong and this scenario could be avoided
3
u/mangoisNINJA 15d ago
So it's not human-free or anti-human, it's anti "animal we spent thousands of years domesticating" sounds sad.
