The only thing that I’ve been finding useful is to expand simple backgrounds in Photoshop (like sky, or a wall). It does save some tedious work when you need a little more background to make bleeds, for example.

What are your thoughts on it. It makes jobs faster no. I noticed people have said that it’s good for backgrounds and upscaling.

It produces shit.

I know this sub likes to hate in AI image generation, but it is a tool like any other. It can be used well or used poorly. There are plenty of AI based tools that can make a designers life easier.

AI based upscaling has made my job quite a bit easier. Artwork or photos provided by customers often are lower quality than we would like. We heavily use Topaz Labs Gigapixel upscaler and it has produced some impressive results for us.

AI generated infill or inpaint is nice for quickly removing items from photos or extending a background a bit. Especially when a finished, flattened graphic comes in and you need to add bleed and the standard Photoshop infill tool isn't producing good results.

I have used AI image generation a few times for background images. Especially when you need something that is an odd proportion. Like an 8ft x1ft banner that you need a generic "mountain and trees" background for.

Okay thanks. I couple of their people said that they use it for backgrounds. I’ll check it out.

I don't use it, that's the best way for me.

Image fixes with Photoshop Generative Tools. Upscaling shitty photos sent by clients and developing generic background with any proper model and UI.

The answer is: No.

Why not. I mean if it makes the job easier and faster right.

Mainly, loss of competency. I see this as an issue with AI in general. People are relying on it to do things they're more than capable of doing themselves, and will (arguably are) lose cognitive function.

"But, why bother when the machine can do it for you easier and faster?"!? Because soon you will forget how to do it, and when that resource isn't available for some reason, you will become useless.

Easier and Faster < Quality.

We’ll see. In a few years it’s probably going to be no different than normal graphic design. Might as well start using it so we’re not behind right.

I keep hearing that from prompt jockeys, Doesn't matter to me anyways, I make good money fixing stuff for clients that went with Fast and Easy.

Wonder if the folks answering no work freelance, in-house, or agency (or are exec-level). I work in-house in a midsize tech company and we have so much pressure from the top down to always keep a finger on the pulse of AI tools. Back in February our team leads were asked to present any AI tools we like using, I explored a bunch and we only came up with Photoshop’s AI as all the other existing AI tools just weren’t developed enough.

Now a month and a half later, the 4o openAI image gen was released and we have direct request from our exec to try using it to generate ads. Waiting on approved budget (lol for $20) but I don’t have super high hopes since our work is very routine, we don’t often do new campaigns so it doesn’t take us very long to begin with since we tend to recycle successful ads.

Other than that the only thing I routinely use is chatGPT bc my team refuses to hire a copywriter, so the stuff we receive often isn’t great. I’ve tried using it for concept generation but I work in tech SaaS with some pretty complex products and haven’t found it very helpful for ideation.

In an ideal world tho I’d love to just not use these products, but I’d rather have a job in this economy than get dinged for ignoring requests to explore/implement AI.
