Discussion YOOO we infected image generators with Lorem Ipsum and now they think that's what a brand looks like

CONTEXT: I was being silly and thought "Mired & Marred" as a binomial pair would make a funny luxury beauty product line name. So I asked ChatGPT (more specifically, Sora) to generate some product packaging and noticed the Lorem Ipsum right away.

At first it was funny but then it struck me: this is what happens when you feed an algo a steady diet of mockups, templates, and design decks. You are what you eat, and Lorem Ipsum was on a lot of menus.

There's something uncanny afoot. Like, our own design rituals being reflected back at us not as placeholders, but as gospel.

Anyone else getting glimpses behind the curtain?

Asking Question (Rule 4) Getting better at graphic design

Hi everyone, I’m currently working with Canva, Figma, and Procreate (for illustrations) and am also experimenting with CapCut for video editing. While I’m making progress, I feel like I could really level up my skills, especially when it comes to more advanced design and editing techniques.

I’d love to hear any advice or recommendations you might have!

I’m interested in anything from: - Courses or tutorials - YouTube channels or other resources - Suggestions for other programs or tools I should consider learning

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

Other Post Type Discussion for thesis

Hello all! (If this post isn't allowed, moderators are welcome to inform me about it and remove the post if need be)
Me and my classmate are currently working on our thesis, as a part of our bachelor's degree.
We want to reach out to this community with a handful of questions related to the use of AI in design.
We would like for those who are interested to answer the questions, and maybe even discuss them further between each other.

With that said, we are of course aware of ethical questions, and will not ask anyone for any personal information. The answers that we will collect will not be shared with anyone who isn't in immediate contact with our thesis work. The collected information will simply be used in our thesis, alongside other method results.

If you have any questions or concerns, I'll be happy to answer them!
We thank you in advance!

The questions are:

  1. What contribution has AI made to a designer's everyday life?
  2. Does everyone understand the meaning of using AI in their work, and do they know how it is used?
  3. How can AI, what it is and what it does for a designer, be explained in an easy way for someone who doesn't have any deeper knowledge about it?
  4. Is there a way to use the language phenomenon of metaphors to explain what AI is and therefore make it easier to understand?

Asking Question (Rule 4) How much should I charge for a design for a clothing brand?

Hi, I recently had the opportunity to make a design for a new clothing brand, is kind of a gym-style brand and they were looking for a cybersigilism design for the back, I am new at design and I don't know how much should I charge for this design and another one that is pretty similar but has the name of the brand in the wings of the character so is both sides (btw only the skull was ai generated, the rest was hand-drawn)

Here's the design: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/672858300265660447/1357563366700351651/diseno_en_rojo.jpg?ex=67f2a328&is=67f151a8&hm=baf7c5cc7c6b3cdc4fb3a510ad9a2d4e0974936edb607adebf8d658af01641fb&

Asking Question (Rule 4) need guide as a newbie in graphic design

hello everyone, i understand, a lot of you might be tired from this same question, but one more time haha. i wanna start learning graphic design and i have several important questions before i start this journey.

  1. ive heard from several people that it isn’t mandatory to be good at drawing but i want real answer, is that right? also, there is a huge difference between drawing on a paper and on ipad, i used to draw a lot in my teen years (which i studied myself and im not naturally good at this) but that was years ago and i didnt touch a pencil since then, so considering this situation will it be hard to draw on ipad if ever necessary?
  2. im scared that i wont be creative once i study graphic design so i need advice and your thought on this. i cant say im not creative but once im face to face to my work what if i wont know what to do and nothing comes to my mind?
  3. in which books should i invest money as a beginner?
  4. my laptop isnt super good atp but im considering getting new one so i wanna know which is the best for graphic design (but i will also use it for my university and personal needs which mostly only contains watching movies and writing) on budget. im considering getting a macbook but i dont really know much about apple laptops, so id be more than happy if you recommend one (which wont cost my liver plz😁)
  5. more like study material, i do not have time right now at least till summer to go to academy ro study graphic design (thats why i have so many questions myself), but im super sure and consistent about my decision and i wanna start learning it myself before professional help, so i wanna know which youtubers or whatever online sources do you recommend?
  6. this one you dont have to answer if you do not want but when did you get your first job/project as a graphic designer after learning it and making portfolio? and just wanna know your experience as a beginner in graphic design.

thank yall in advance, have a nice day/night. 💌

Discussion In your job, how often do you battle against ignorant requests?

A client sent me a label that is 6.25”x2.25”. They don’t want me to change anything, they just want it printed as on 6.25”x3.25”. They do not want the background to be bigger and obviously don’t want distortion.

This is obviously an impossible ask. The customer does not understand the issue even with visual examples.

I feel like a large majority of the projects I work on are with clients that couldn’t spell their own name. Is this the day in the life?

Asking Question (Rule 4) Just ordered the M4 MacBook Air – will it hold up for design work?

Hey everyone,

I just ordered the new 15-inch MacBook Air M4 (10-core CPU/GPU, 32GB RAM). I’m currently using an old Intel MacBook Pro (i5, 8GB RAM), so I’m expecting a huge boost in speed and performance.

I’m a web developer but I spend a lot of time in Figma, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Most of my days involve UI/UX design, mockups, exporting assets, and working with multiple files at once. No video editing or 3D work – just heavy multitasking across design and dev tools.

Now I’m wondering if I should’ve gone with a MacBook Pro instead, mainly for the active cooling. Do you think the M4 Air can handle intensive design work without thermal throttling or overheating in the long run?

Curious to hear if any of you are using the new M4 Air for serious design workflows. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Asking Question (Rule 4) How to present this in a portfolio?

Thumbnail

Genuinely wondering here, I'm working on a personal project to put in my portfolio - this is originally not chosen by my group so might as well work on it alone. It's a THC-infused drink and I know you're supposed to have the THC label with all the stuff by law.

Question stands, how do I present the flat wraps for the can label in a portfolio? Should I keep the labels, just keep it the wrap... both maybe just to show where things would theoretically go? Any help as well as work criticism is appreciated!

(second slide is how the label is supposed to look like, just for fun and all)

Other Post Type Help with gradient resolution?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey guys, I’m not a graphic designer but a musician. I make very minimal cover art design for myself like this one because I don’t like thinking much about that side of things. I wanted to have a cool gradient vibe with the purple fading into the black since I usually just use full black and this is a special release. I hate however the way you can see each tone/layer of purple in this really pixely sort of way. Is that just inevitable since I’m using such simple colors, or did I do something wrong exporting and is there a way for it to look smoother?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Help!!! Can I still design using cursive now that younger generations can’t read it?

I’ve been a graphic designer since 1997 and now I find out that they no longer teach cursive. I’m not sure if this has been brought up before or not, but what are people doing about designing logos or incorporating text using cursive? Kids these days, including young adults, already can’t read it and it’s only getting worse. If I design a logo that a company plans on using for years, should I leave cursive out? Should I just stop using it all together? Thoughts? Thank you! #graphicdesign

Portfolio/CV Review Looking for Portfolio Feedback

Hello! I'm a recent graduate in graphic design and I’m looking for feedback on my portfolio. I love designing visual identities, so most of my portfolio is focused on that.

As a junior designer, I know I probably won’t jump straight into full branding projects, so I’ve also tried to include both digital and print design to demonstrate my typography and layout skills.

I’ve translated the project texts into English for this review, but I’ll be switching them back to Finnish later, since I’ll be applying for jobs in Finland. The About page is still in progress so I’ve hidden it for now.

I’d really appreciate any feedback on the projects. Thank you in advance!

Asking Question (Rule 4) Adobe student subscription question

Hi everyone

Quick question here, I expect to graduate in a month or two and am considering making use of the adobe student membership for one year paid upfront. However, I expect to lose access to my student email after graduating, how do I go about this? Can you add more emails to your account or do I have to contact support immediately after signing up to switch emails? Thanks 😅

Asking Question (Rule 4) Game Studio Logo Design

I am working as a freelancer in this Game Studio. They told me to create a logo according to the name. The company didn't had a story, Ideation as well as a brief for their logo so they gave me the whole creative freedom with a deadline of 24hr. I did this logo without any grid or rules & aligned things optically. Designers I need your opinions for any kind of improvement.

Inspiration Graded Shoes Company - We need a logo!

My two pals and I have started an exciting new business venture, "GRADED SHOES COMPANY"!

We will be the first company to authenticate, grade and encapsulate (permanently house in plastic) collectible sneakers. In much the same way that PCGS grades rare coins, or PSA grades rare cards, we plan to grade high-end sneakers.

We've secured funding from a venture capital firm, but we're on a total shoe-string budget starting out. We're offering $100.00 (paid via Venmo, or mailed check) to the artist who comes up with the most befitting logo. While this might not be the highest paying gig, we will definitely need a design expert on our staff going forward, and this has the potential to blossom into a long-term working relationship.

We're hoping for a modern logo that incorporates our key philosophies of trustworthiness and integrity.

If you're interested, please DM me your logo! We'd greatly any assistance from any of you design gurus!

Look for us at Sneaker-Con 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota!

Asking Question (Rule 4) 7 years designer to art director?

A person reached out to me vía linkedin for a job offer and we had a meeting.

I thought the position was for a graphic designer (as that's what I market myself as on Linkedin) but turns out it's for a (Jr.) Art Director at an agency.

I explained to him that most of my experience has been as an in-house designer, and that I don't have experience in art direction or at agencies (I'm lowkey scared of that work environment). He said that that wasn't a problem, as they were okay with a junior.

He asked for my expected salary and said he'd sent out my info to the hiring manager and would reach out to me soon.

Now, impostor syndrome aside, being realistic I don't think I'm qualified for that type of job— not only experience wise but I feel like an AD has to be very extroverted and knowledgeable in things like photography, video, mentorship, etc, which I'm not. I googled the company and they seem to be legit, they are a small agency.

Assuming they want to hire me and oay what I requested, I don't want to be stupid and decline a good opportunity, but I personally don't want to end up in a horrible job or fired because I can't perform.

Any thoughts?

Asking Question (Rule 4) Best laptop for graphics design?..

Hey you guys! First of all, I apologize if my English is kind of all over the place it’s not my mother language :| I’m new to graphic design and planning to buy a new laptop because my current one can’t really handle Photoshop or AI, so what I’m asking is what are your recommendations? Keep in mind I’m an unemployed student so my budget is low…
