I've always associated the Breastplate of Petrified Wood with Rampart, what makes you add it to Fortress?

It's a pretty woody place and basilisks can petrify, that's my guess at least. I always thought the same as you.

Weren’t those supposed to be combined with helm of the unicorn, centaur’s axe and shield of the dwarven king to form a special artifact, but then ended up not happening?

u/shylittleshrimpie Jun 07 '24
Yes it was 50-50 for me, but wood gets petrified in wet conditions, so...

Supreme crown of Magi needs to be moved to Tower.

u/shylittleshrimpie Jun 07 '24
That's possible. I was thinking about Ogre Magi

I think it's worth it to look into flavor text of the artifacts too, especially if not sure. The crown has:
A mad wizard who has been terrorizing the region has foolishly chosen you as his target today. Realizing that his power comes from his crown, you take aim with your bow, knocking the crown from his head and releasing him from his crazed madness. Grateful to be free, he lets you keep the crown.
I think it would be mentioned if the wizard was an ogre. Wizard is also a Tower hero class. I think based on that it should be fortress.

Half your comments are grognards nitpicking where you put stuff. Shrimpie, I want you to know that I **appreciate** you. I might even love you.
I've never seen someone categorize the artifacts like this before. It makes perfect sense to do so, too. You did a fantastic job.
BraveStrongHandsomeJawlineShrimpie, you did a fantastic job. Go enjoy a robust meal of algae and plankton, you've earned it.

This is a level of wholesomeness I expect from Ted lasso not reddit, you are breathtaking and your comment is really beautiful. May your magikarp splash and your 420 smash.

Spellbinder's Hat should be Tower. Maybe the Wizard's Well and Ring of the Magi too.
Conflux should get the elemental tomes and orbs.

What is that inferno 5th artifact that looks like a flaming horseshoe?
3
u/Irydion Jun 06 '24
Demon's horseshoe. HotA artifact.

u/Unique-Structure-201 Jun 07 '24
Ohhh, what does it do?

u/Unique-Structure-201 Jun 07 '24
Disregard, I haven't read the OP's reply on this at that point of time when I first replied to yours.

Oh I hadn't read the OP's reply to the answer before replying to this one, my bad. Thanks,!

Ha, very cool list. It seems rather obvious, but I had never thought about it this way..
Castle with the strongest unit and strongest artefacts.. yet when Sir Mullich is banned, I have a very hard time picking a main and just hope to get a barbarian/beastmaster/warlord in the tavern :)
Crown of Ogre Magi or Crown of Arch Magi is one of the grey areas for me..
But great job honestly!

u/shylittleshrimpie Jun 07 '24
I agree, some towns don't have amazing standout heroes, for me Conflux is like that. With Castle I usually pick Orrin

The dragon scale and dragon tabard are Dungeon artifacts, even if they're green. In fact, look at combo artifacts: their components are a specific faction's artifacts.
Otherwise, I think artifacts which don't combine (except for Rampart's) weren't really ever though to be part of a faction. The ones which combine all respect a certain stat trend and were designed with the faction in mind.
P.S. There are some artifacts which do combine and aren't necessarily faction artifacts, like those which make up the Sharpshooter's Bow - those represent a "role", rather than a faction.

u/Repeatability Jun 07 '24
Since Gelu is a ranger and he’s the sole sharpshooter special hero, I think it makes sense to say that this artifact belongs to Rampart.
1
u/Titan5880 Jun 07 '24
Yes, but actually no, if taking into consideration the game's design. Design-wise, there is only a single set for each faction (each of which respects a certain trend in terms of stats - eg. Castle artifacts give all 4 stats, while Rampart's are the weakest and Dungeon's give a mix of two stats), and the sharpshooter artifacts are one of the skill artifacts (not faction affiliated in NWC's design). Just like the Resistance, Diplomacy etc. artifacts.
What you say also makes sense, but still, the game was designed in one way, and that must be respected (HotA did it when making their new artifacts, for example).

u/shylittleshrimpie Jun 07 '24
Only Rampart has Green Dragons. I didn't consider artifact combos for this list. The artifacts themselves have to represent the Town.
1
u/Titan5880 Jun 07 '24
Well, each combined artifact contains the artifacts the devs designed as belonging to one faction: saying that the green scale artifacts are from Rampart just because they are the only ones with Green Dragons is not valid from the actual design POV of the game, as they are, well, from Dungeon, the DnD (Dragon; also a carryover from the earlier HoMM games) town in NWC's design.

I always wanted those Inferno artifacts to combine into something. I know there's a campaign where they can be combined into Armageddon's Blade which is obviously too powerful. But maybe into a new artifact that grants fire immunity.
1
u/shylittleshrimpie Jun 07 '24
Yeah true, but I think the Stronghold set combines to do several things including fire resistance. It's not as though Inferno already has a tough enough time...

You forgot Titan's Thunder and Sentinel's shield, (which makes the Titan's Thunder)

Doesn't the Tower also have the shield that subtracts attack and provides defense ?
1
u/shylittleshrimpie Jun 07 '24
It's part of a set, but by itself I didn't think it represented Tower
1
u/guest_273 Thunderbirds Jun 10 '24
Maybe a version of this where some artifacts are in 2 towns simultaneously could also be an option?
2
u/shylittleshrimpie Jun 10 '24
Sounds very messy. Have an particular ones in mind?
1
u/guest_273 Thunderbirds Jun 10 '24
Crown of the Magi - Tower / Stronghold
Helm of Chaos - Dungeon / Fortress
Sentinels Shield - Tower / Cove (I think there's a mermaid on the shield)
Dragon wing tabard - Rampart / Dungeon
Dragon bone grieves - Necropolis / Rampart / Dungeon
Flaming sword imho in Inferno.
Basically every comment that said this Artifact could also be in X, just add them to both and see if it makes more sense that way.
2
u/shylittleshrimpie Jun 11 '24
I prefer it the way I did it, gives room for discussion, and I also think for most artifacts they are clearly associated with one town, not including combined artifacts. The Red Dragon Flame Tongue has Red Dragon in the name, so clearly Dungeon.

u/LisanneFroonKrisK Jun 06 '24
Tier list?? Dung is weakest when it could be the strongest??
2
u/subservient-mouth Jun 07 '24
That's why they need an Artifact's Merchant - they suck at making items themselves!

Missing: Sentinel's Shield, Shield of Lion Courage, Necklace of Dragon Teeth, Armor of Wonder, Boots of Polarity, Dragon Bone Greaves, Quiet and Still Eyes of the Dragon...I think each of those could probably be assigned a town. Not that it would impact rankings.
