Question Is it just me still playing RMG 'No Template' games? If there are any other dinosaurs out there, let me know!

There’s something special about the pure randomness and unpredictability - it keeps every game fresh and full of surprises. Glad to see others still enjoying it in HotA!

Hello, neighbor! I’m from Bulgaria, and this is how we first discovered computers here (after playing Mortal Kombat, of course! :D).
A typical Saturday night involved a hot seat gaming session, which was the highlight of our week.
The person with the computer always ended up winning the game, naturally! :D

I love that I've been playing this game for 20+ years but this sub regularly makes me feel like a newb lol what are templates and how do I access them?

u/TheFakeJohnHelldiver Jan 13 '25
Templates are a set of rules for how a random maps will be generated. It can tell things like how many zones there are, how difficult guards will be, what types of objectives will spawn, number of towns/dwellings etc. Then the random map generates based on those parameters
In HotA there is a drop down menu at the top when selecting a random map. It will say "default" template to start with. Simple click the drop down and select your desired template. You can also upload them manually or even create them yourself with the RMG template editor, which should be automatically downloaded when you get HotA.

Yes! Yes! I received a lot of downvotes for commenting on topics that I couldn't understand. I was simply asking others, "What is this? Why would you prefer this option over the obvious one?" and similar questions.

Haha I usually don't ask! I did come out of my shell to ask that though, cus it really piqued my curisoity: how do I apply templates?
I've been playing through some random-generated maps in the last couple weeks because I figured they might be the best way to see and use some of the new features rolled out with the recent update--but I find they can get a little monotonous in their randomness

How do you get to a 'no template' game?
Your screenshot is unreadable.

New Game - Multiplayer/Single Player - Random Map (S/M/XL...etc.)

u/cmikaiti Jan 13 '25
hmmm... I'll need to test tonight.
My recollection is that I either select a scenario or a random map based on a template.
That said, it's probably just muscle memory and I'm missing something.

u/TheGuyFromBG Jan 14 '25
u/cmikaiti , did you try it?
1
u/cmikaiti Jan 14 '25
Yeah, I think HOTA changed it.
I can't pick anything like 'no template'. The best option seem to be 'default' which just chooses a random template from a list.

u/TheGuyFromBG Jan 14 '25
That's the real deal - choose a random map, set up your details, and hit the Start Button!
1
u/TheGuyFromBG Jan 13 '25
Sure, give it a try. The only certain thing is that you will have your wood and ore mines near your town. Everything else is a mystery.

Съгласен съм 😁

u/TheGuyFromBG Jan 13 '25
Скоро ще зарибя дъщеря ми (I am going to introduce my daughter to HOMM 3)
2
u/presolol Jan 13 '25
И аз в бъдеще като имам деца ще ги зарибя, трябва да продължим това което нашите започнаха! (In the future when I have kids I will also get them hooked on heroes, we must continue what our parents started!)

Only way to play it!
I don’t like templates, or even the campaign as it pushes you to break the map. Which is cool, but once you figure out the path, it’s boring to me.
Random till the day I die!

I tried a few template games but I dont understand what the templates add, so I just stick to doing normal no template.

To be clear, there is no such thing as a "no template" RMG map (as you can verify by using the template editor to create an empty template with no zones); the template is literally the instruction for the RMG on what to place. No template selected merely means the game defaults to picking a random template appropriate to the selected map size, from the initial NWC-made pool of templlates.

u/TheGuyFromBG Jan 13 '25
Absolutely right—there’s always a template at play, even when it seems like there isn’t. What people typically refer to as 'no template' is just the game defaulting to one of the original NWC templates without the player actively selecting it. Those templates do feel more chaotic compared to structured ones like Jebus Cross, which is probably why the term 'no template' stuck around. Thanks for pointing this out—it’s a good reminder of how the RMG actually works under the hood!

Yup, 1v7, no water, strong monsters, 200%, how I learned back in the day. Have fun finding wood and ore, lol.

I am a late joiner, bought the game less than a month ago. Have only played on random or templates that can be selected with random. Have never tried a fixed map, not sure I ever will.

I didn’t even know templates were a thing until many years after. Played original random template loads before, but I do think the overabundance of teleports are a bit too much sometimes.
