Question What is the concensus on retrying battles?

With HD Mod and HoTA, there is now an easy way to retry at battle if you're not happy with the results. This used to require 'cheating' by saving before the battle and loading the save. But now that the option is there, is it considered part of the game and completely legitimate?

There are no illegitimate ways to play non-competitive single player games. This is an entertainment product and you should use it the way you find most entertaining, whether that’s save scumming everything or no reloading or anywhere in between. I personally love save scumming castle defenses against superior armies to try to see if I can solve the puzzle of how to win a bad fight

I agree, I love to 'dark souls' my way out of tricky situations if possible and lose until I learn how to win against bad odds

Right now I’ve been save scumming against a very high level Tav with 112 pheonix, 44 chaos Hydras, 32 Ancient Behemoths, 100 psych elementals, 329 cerberus, and 92 cyclops.

I have 45 arch angels, 99 black dragons, 32 Pheonix, 145 monks, 87 champions, 187 medusa queens, 110 scorpicores. I also have implosion with orb of silt to deal about 4500 some damage a hit.

0 success so far.

Destroy/incapacitate the behemoths first. Wait on your dragons and angels, then dive in and knock out some cyclops and fly away next turn to avoid the no retal attacks

I gave up, there was no winning. He also had about every spell in the book and was using them. Even if I took out the behemoths he would have his hydras, psych elementals, and cerberus to decimate my units. Dealing with the 112 Pheonix would tie up all my hard hitting dragons alone.

Guess another option would be to wait and melee down the elementals, hope you get a lucky stone or paralyze on the Phoenix, and try to blind the rest. But that is a lot of rounds of trying to blind while not dealing with what he casts. Although if he blinds your angels, you might be able to use your Phoenix breath to wake them if positioning works out.

If single player you decide if multiplayer vote

You can't do that in multiplayer to begin with, it's a singleplayer-only convenience replacement for what you could always do by exiting to menu.

Was just gonna save scum anyway. If I think I could swing it if I did a little better, why not try?

Yeah, it's like a puzzle. I'll retry battles a bunch of times to see about preventing enemy retreat, or losing less units, or something to that tune.

Good way to learn HOMM3 battle tactics

Yeah the QOL improvement is great. I used to play but have never been good at it. Restarted HOTA the only issue I find is wood and ore mines seem harder to come by and sometimes require fights to reach. Seems like wood and ore were givens in the original from what I remember.

In solo often times puzzle maps require it, so imo not a problem

Some maps have these challenge fights, where the main idea is retrying a bunch of times to learn the enemy AI's spells and behaviours to counter them.
