JC XL (strong mobs, no water, no AI players) is the most popular template.

But you better start with the same map, L size and medium monster difficulty. This will go way faster and will allow you to learn the basics.

I would also recommend to watch some competitive games played on youtube, this would give you understanding of meta, tactics and how modern HOMM3 works, because it has evolved into rather fast game- where starting resources and troops are used to multiply your strength during the first week, and during early second week final battle usually already takes place...

There are a number of popular PvP templates:

Some are 1 hero formats that focus on a very quick game, generally duel, jebus outcast and mt jo or other mirror templates (hence the mt in the name), others try to capture the vibe of a normal random template, with less army boxes and more focused on build-up like the memory lane template, but in a 1-hero setting.

Other 1-hero templates focus on getting insane armies and stats and artefacts, like clash of dragons and vietnamese diplomacy

And there are 8 hero templates, some of them already included in the HotA random map templates (8mml, 8xml 6lm10a or something along those lines). These feel more or less similar to memory lane or the original random maps, but in a 8 hero format where chaining the army is key.

Most of the pvp templates have some kind of specific rules that you need to follow for a balanced game.

More info about them here: https://h3hota.com/en/templates
