Question - Solved Heroes III Complete not launching on ROG Ally

I know I’m fishing in a small pond here, but has anyone been able to play the Complete version on the Ally? It simply won’t launch on mine.

I’ve tried it on both the Ubisoft and GOG launchers. HD version on Steam works flawlessly but obviously want to play the complete version if possible.

I’ve tried doing all the different windows compatibility modes, none have work.

Question - Solved I need help with campaign

So i'm doing Dragon Slayer.

After the first mission, I found online that Rust Dragons is the better mission to start with. But I got my ass kicked by Shiva with an overwhelming force.

I tried again. Same thing. I ignored the dragons and rushed the cities, but it was futile.

What am I doing wrong? Am I just unlucky? None of my mage guild and llibraries got Town Portal or Berserk, which would be really useful.

I am losing hope. Any tips?

Question - Solved Need help finding a game

So a few year ago there was this game that went around claiming to be a bit of a combination of HoMM3 and Hearthstone. Like YouTube ads were just this game. I dont remember how finished it was but the combat system had hexes movement and attacking that was similar to HoMM3 and the card asspect and layout of the game was similar to Hearthstone. The game had 2-3 factions. One was kinda like castle and the other like fortress. If you have any idea what the game might be called, please ive stayed up for hours searching for this game.

Question - Solved Can I port campaigns from homm complete to play in hota?

Hi everyone!

Back in the day when I played chronicles, to play with hd mod i know i downloaded them as custom campaign and added them to the hota gamemod(i only missed hero pictures but that was by choice, they come with the campaigns)

I was wondering, can I do the same with the original campaigns? If so, where do I get the files. I figured i have them in the game folder, just dont know where.

Question - Solved chronological order of all campaigns in HoM&M3

Some time ago I decided to replay all of the campaigns from HoM&M3 in chronological order for the first (and probably last) time. I was searching for the chronological order on the interwebs and found some but when I played the campaigns I find out I don't agree with any of those lists 100%. Mainly because of the Chronicles campaigns (they are a bit of mess in terms of retcon). Sometimes they SHOULD be before/after some of the other campaigns but it didn't make sense story-wise and character-wise (Tarnum's) imo.

So I did my own chronological list with basic bulletpoints for each campaign stating what is going on in each of them. I hope it will be useful for someone eventually. This is pretty much exactly what I was looking for roughly a year ago and didn't find it. So I did it myself and now It's here for other players.

There may be some campaigns you would put before/after some others for whatever reason and that's cool, that's your opinion. This is mine.

I hope you'll enjoy this list (all 3 people who will find this useful :D).

Abbreviations:

HC - Heroes Chronicles

HCHD - Heroes Chronicles HD (mod; highly recommended for HeroesChronicles playthrough)

SoD - Shadow of Death

AB - Armageddon's Blade

RoE - Restoration of Erathia

HC: Warlords of the Wasteland

Question - Solved HD Mod optimal graphics settings

What graphics settings are you using? I used to be a staunch bilinear 2x sharper kinda person but after seeing an old thread saying smoothsal2x and linear sharper looked great, i kinda have to agree. It looks like bilinear2xsharper without the blur.

So, im going to say for preserving the game's art style while still playing in a stretchable window, SmoothSal2x with LinearSharper is the best.

I toyed around with the settings with a few hours and i'll copy paste the text i wrote about it and the images i took. I dont know if true in the text means direct draw in the launcher. They changed the name some years ago i havent figured that out yet.For reference, i have a 1440p monitor and i play in full screen

My txt file about this:

original (16-bit) - original color mode with no changes.

16-bit (auto switch) - HoMM3 HD automatically changes desktop color mode to 16-bit when you launch the game, and switches it back at closing (incl. abnormal) which allows you to play in window mode without switching screen color mode manually.

32-bit GDI - HoMM3 runs in 32-bit color mode using GDI (component of Windows) conversion from 16-bit to 32-bit (that decreases graphics perfomance on very slow computers). So you can play in window without switching screen color mode.

32-bit (stretchable) - HoMM3 runs in 32-bit color mode, using fast MMX conversion from 16-bit to 32-bit. Also 32-bit (stretchable) mode allows to resize game window and allows to play full screen with any non-standard resolutions. To resize game screen HoMM3 HD uses one of selected filters: bilinear, bilinear sharper, bilinear sharper x2, bilinear sharper x3. Without stretching, 32-bit (stretchable) mode works faster than 32-bit GDI; however, if the window is stretched, 32-bit (stretcahble) works slower than 32-bit GDI.

32-bit True - HoMM3 runs in 32-bit color mode directly without any conversions. 32-bit True is the fastest 32-bit color mode, as fast as original 16-bit.

32-bit True (stretchable) GDI – Recommended - The game runs in 32-bit mode directly with no conversions from 16-bit into 32-bit. As in 32-bit (stretchable), you can change the game screen by changing window size, and play in full-screen mode with any non-standard resolution with different scale filtres. The image is also GDI (Windows component) adapted. Combination of all the best components from all the above mentioned modes makes 32-bit True (stretchable) GDI the most stable and comfortable to play.

16bit opengl and 32bit opengl enable smooth animations for travel in the world. Not in combat, for some reason.

SmoothSal is passable. Still looks filtered and blurry, not sharp. I dont like it

xBRZ is ugly ai filtering. Looks like HD edition. Blech.

OpenGL None None Pixelated. Probably as close to vanilla as you can get with stretchability and stuff.

OpenGL None Linear is extremely blurry. No.

OpenGL None Hermite is very very comparable to GDIBilinear2xSharper, teensy weensy bit sharper, extremely minor difference, cannot be seen without specifically looking at comparisons. I still prefer bilinear 2x.

OpenGL None Cubic is somewhat blurry. I dont like it

OpenGL None Lanczos is teensy weensy bit sharper than GDIBilinear2xSharper. Difference without looking at a direct comparison is imperceptible. Even with a comparison is very hard to notice.

OpenGL None LinearSharper Oversharpened by a lot. Not a fan

OpenGL SmoothSalx2 LinearSharper is probably best IMHO. Looks like bilinear 2x sharper withour the blur

My choice of res is 1520x855 because its actually 16:9 meaning there wont be rounding errors in the upscaling algorithm

Question - Solved Help on HOMM3 stuff to install + getting it working as original.

I want to get back to playing HOMM3 - starting with the basic and then through expansions. Also being able to play online would be cool.

I did this a few years ago and encountered some issues, so just wanted to clarify how to get best experience.

What I remember from last time:

  • I followed on directions online (maybe reddit) on which Heroes 3 to install etc.
  • I remember it was to def. get the Complete from GOG, not the HD from Steam.
  • Then there was something like HDMod and HoTA. I don't quite remember what they were now.
  • I remember when I was trying to just play the campaigns, there were directories and files I'd have to look up in the game and figure out which order to play them, instead of just having it all integrated officially and smoothly bundled as the real game, I even had to make myself a list so I knew the order. This wasn't pleasant.

Questions:

  1. How do I make it so I can easily access the bundled campaigns/campaign "episodes", as intended in the original game?
  2. Does having the expansions on there still allow me to play starting at the basic game?
  3. Is there a place to find people to play with online, or is that more of connecting with friends thing?
  4. What are the differences of GOG Complete vs w/HDMod vs w/HoTA?

Question - Solved Maps like The Devil is in the Detail?

I've played HMOM3 since it came out in 99, and now playing with HotA etc.

Ive tried so many maps on maps4heroes, but so many are literal shit (sorting by rating), weird starting stuff with locked expansions or starting with Capitol done etc..

I just want clean, "oldschool" maps, like The Devil is in the Detail, without super advanced stuff like too much water or similar things.

Anyone care to explain where I can find it?

Also, if anyone knows why some downlaoded maps wont show? There is a .dat file sometimes with the map but I have no clue as to what do to with it. Sometimes its needed, sometimes it works without.

Question - Solved Does Heroes 3 HD + has reworked AI?

Hello all, i usually play HOTA with HD+ but lastly i'm feeling like i want play a game with the original settings (Mostly for unnerfed logistics tbh). That made me remember that in the base game, the AI was so bad it made any long hotseat games just boring (Army spread to all heroes, poor item equipment etc..) unless it's a challenge map with huge AI boosts., wich i'm not a fan of..

Thinking about it i feel the best improvement HOTA brought was the updated AI (not perfect but still wayyyy better than the original).

So does any of you know if i launch Heroes 3 HD + from the HD launcher, will i still have updated AI or not?

Hi, I remember that I loved one yt series where "Vice-Captain" showed me how to use advanced homm3 tactics like blinding everything to have time to resurrect and showed my that everything can be beaten with dragon fly and cyclops. So I recently downloaded VCMI, everything works fine, I installed the HotA mod, but thr campaign doesn't appear and I feel like tge solution is so obvious like scrolling down a bit, but I don't know. In single matches I do have the faction, troops and all works fine, only the campaign doesn't want to show itself. Am I as dumb as I feel like?

Has anyone figured out a way to do the second waterwalk puzzle in Tomb Raiders?

I've managed to get as far as revealing the square to land next to the Bird of Perception, however even with 4k movement points I'm still about 700 short of completing the trip in one day.

As far as I can tell noone has yet posted any video solutions to this puzzle and I'd rather beat this without cheating. Any ideas?

Question - Solved Legacy of the Silence XXL mod - Help!

Hi Heros modding world, I am loving Legacy of the Silence, but i simply can not get the XXL map mod to work. I have activated it in the mod manger and H, XH, G maps appear but when selected I get the below message, I also can not select islands. Now I have tried to search for solutions but am finding limited dialogue on trouble shooting. Can anyone help with what I am doing wrong?

Question - Solved New Player just got gog version - Where is the Cove castle?

Researching the game I found a castle type called the Cove but can't pick it in the menu to start the game with. Is that part of a dlc not included in the gog edition? Or do I have to find the castle in the wild and capture it? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm brand new to the experience.

Question - Solved GOG not tracking my "time played" after HotA installation - any way to fix?

I downloaded Heroes 3 Complete from GOG, and then installed HotA.

Used install directory "C:\GOG Galaxy\Games\HoMM 3 Complete" as the commonly-used workaround here for when HotA isn't finding your install.

I've put in at least 4 overnights (I know very sad, and I will curb my new heroes 3 addiction lol), but GOG says I played 1 minute still.

It's not a terrible problem, but anyway to fix it without messing anything else up?

SOLVED:

I figured it out

  1. Pressed the "+" sign on "installed games" in GOG Galaxy client and got it to scan the directories I moved my installation to, so it found heroes 3 and added it to the Galaxy client.
  2. I used the solution here
  3. I also right-clicked the Heroes 3 game in the Galaxy Client, went to "Manage Installation", then "Configure", then to "Features" and scrolled down to what was ticked as "default executable" -> duplicated that and made the file HD_Launcher.exe instead of Heroes3.exe, and ticked off the "default executable" circle under it.
  4. I then also edited my Heroes3 shortcut on desktop - found the 'gameID' on https://www.gogdb.org/
  • and changed 'Target' to

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\GalaxyClient.exe" /command=runGame /gameId=1207658787 /path="C:\GOG Galaxy\Games\HoMM 3 Complete"
  • and 'Start in' to

"C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy"

This way I can just click my Heroes3 shortcut on the desktop, which automatically launches the GOG Galaxy client if it's closed and also my game, this makes sure I can conveniently launch it, while also tracking my time played. :)

You can do this for any GOG games, afaik.

Question - Solved Where does the map editor define which obstacle objects are placed via the Obstacle Tool?

In Horn of the Abyss' Map Editor, I want to temporarily disable certain objects, e.g. mountains, from being randomly placed with the Obstacle Tool. I would like to place only trees to make a giant forest-themed map, but the mountains really ruin it. I need to edit the file which defines the mountains as obstacles for the map editor, so that the editor will not place them via the Obstacle Tool. Do you know what file is it or how to achieve that in another way?

Question - Solved HoTA Random Map Generator, Tier 8 creatures and rare building question

How do I enable tier 8 creatures (faerie, rust, crystal and azure dragons)?

I was wondering if someone could help me, with activating the dwellings/buildings for the mentioned dragons in the Original template pack maps, for the random map generator.

I went to the Template tab and accessed the Settings and there i went to the Objects tab, where i enabled the buildings for the mentioned dragons. I have added 9999 at frequency (that is the max number that can be added), but the buildings don't appear on the map. I've tried multiple random generated maps and the buildings still don't appear.

What could i do to ensure that the buildings appear on a random map?

Question - Solved Help/question about enemy stack mechanics

Hey there. I have been getting back into homm 3 in the past weeks. And i have a question about enemy stacks. What makes them split up or stack up. Often times depending on my hero i would prefer the enemy to have many stacks (if i have good spells like chain), other times a single stack would be better (if i have a strong shooter stack).

Is there a way to somewhat manipulate that in regular play?
