Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)
  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

Has your dog's breed been solved?

Once you're satisfied with your responses, please change your link flair to SOLVED. (Please don't make a post if your dog's breed is already solved/known)

/r/IDmyDog needs mod(s) to combat anti-Pit Bull brigading

Recently there has been a sharp uptick in comments from trolls brigading us from anti Pit Bull subreddits.

Harassing users for owning Pit Bulls is considered uncivil and off topic behavior, and not what this subreddit is for.

The pit bull conversation is one worth having, but not at the expense of derailing the function of this subreddit.

So in the meantime we're going to do 2 things:

  1. Get some mod(s) that can help tackle the issue with harassment and off topic comments. If you are interested in helping with this, please leave a comment below explaining why you're fit for the task.

  2. Create a subreddit wiki page or megathread post that informs and discusses the Pit Bull topic in a civil and unbiased manner, so that the rest of the subreddit isn't overrun with it. If you would like to contribute to this project, please leave a comment below or a modmail.

We got duped?

Not that we are complaining in the slightest because this guy is so wonderful and we love the heck out of him. The person we got him from says he is a Keeshond/Rottweiler mix and he would be roughly 50-100lbs. To me he looks exactly like a mix of the 2 breeds and with the size of his paws I figured he would be more Keeshond size. We decided to change vets (they were robbing people blind), and everyone there who met him was very surprised about his size. The vet agreed about his breed but said he was a miniature of some sort and probably won't weigh anymore than he does now (around 22lbs).

Does anyone have any idea what else he might be mixed with for him to be so small?

hi everyone!! this is clementine!! i recently started fostering her after losing my other dog to cancer, and i've decided to keep her 🥹🥹 the shelter said shes a staffordshire terrier mix, but i'm curious what y'all think she could be!! for reference she'll be 2 this june. she weighs roughly around 30lbs, maybe less, she lost a lot of weight in the shelter. but we're working on her getting her healthy and chunky again.

He was listed as a “rottweiler mix” at the rescue we adopted from. Not sure how accurate that is or what he could be mixed with?

Open Found her two months ago on the street, I think she’s about 6-7 months old now. Thinking beagle shepherd?

Her name is Ducky! She’s very energetic, smart and sneaky, loves a good cuddle but also sometimes wants personal space. And she’s in love with my 1 year old Pit Bull, Sprout. Sisters for life. I also see sometimes Beagadors (beagle labs) kinda look like her, but the coloration makes me think German shepherd. She’s about 25-30 pounds but the same height as Sprout (41 lbs). Thoughts?

I’m inquiring about the black one. She is 3.5 ish months old, and I’ve just adopted her! Picking up next weekend. The other dog shown with her, the yellow, is her full blooded sister. I can update my post later tonight with the breeds the rescue says they are. I will be doing an Embark test, just curious what others think!

I agree with the shelter, btw.

My kiddo. 20" at the shoulder. About 50lbs. She's definitely a runner. Smart, but very adhd lol. Very affectionate, easily jealous.

She is 100% Cutie and very smart. She likes to hunt (we're working on that) and has troubles focusing on anything when outside. I think she could be part terrier.

New foster, what do you guys think?

This is Jack. The foster org thinks he is around three years old. He's about 20 lbs. His most striking feature is the flecked brown coat. (He's sick right now, heartworms and kennel cough, but we are getting him better!) (Also available for adoption in NYC if anyone is looking 😎)

The rescue place says he is a Springer Spaniel mix. I see the Spaniel in his paws and chest. Not sure what else he is mixed with. They said maybe rat terrier or Boston terrier. I see more lab or maybe a shepherd.

This is my little guy - Oslo! He is 3 1/2 and is a mutt. From what I was told by the farm he was born on, he’s a mix of Corgi, Aussie, and Heeler. He was only supposed to be 20 pounds, is about forty, has a curled tail and is longer than he is tall. I’ve always wondered what could make such an awkward and beautiful creature!

Open Wondering what my parent’s dog breeds might be. They said golden retriever and pug but I see a Newfie mix. Any idea what the other breed would be? Or maybe a different combo than my guess?

He about 40-45 pounds and he’s almost 13 years old. He’s not very big at all and has the best temperament I’ve ever experienced in a dog.

He’s just a little under 6 weeks old, he was abandoned at a co workers when he was a couple days old - I got him at 3 1/2 weeks. And I work in animal medicine. So he’s good I promise ! But we don’t know what he is

  • I will be doing a dna test at some point

Puppy is 5 months and people keep telling me he is full blooded GSD. I’ve seen different patterns of GSD but can’t tell his pattern because of the mange. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Maybe grey GSD? His ears are brownish/red in the photos. He’s at my parents house currently so I haven’t gotten photos yet.

Mom is getting an Embark kit for Mother’s Day this year, but what do yall think??! I think he’s a Boston chihuahua. He’s about 5 years old, the white is actual white, not greying from the texture at least (and what their vet says), and look how much he’s brightening up with just a little love! First photo was the day he was found, second photo was yesterday - just a week later.
