It was such a great performance

44

u/vikinxo 3d ago

It was, in addition to him being a dead ringer for Morrison in that film!

u/izolablue 3d ago

This was my favorite role of his. RIP, good man.

u/Wooden_Werewolf_6789 3d ago

Agreed. No better casting could have happened

12

u/izolablue 3d ago

Now I’m going to have to watch it again.

"You were great Val". "Thanks Jim".

Jennifer Tilly had a great memory from the audition call for The Doors:

Tilly wrote that when she auditioned for The Doors, it was “kind of a cattle call” as producers "paired potential Jims with potential Pamelas,” a reference to casting for Morrison and his girlfriend Pamela Courson.

“They were running behind so we were spilling out of the casting office, sitting on the porch, the lawn, and the driveway,” Tilly wrote. “All of a sudden, a sixties convertible came screeching up, blaring Doors music at top volume. And a guy jumped out and strode inside: He had wild hair and he was barefoot, shirtless, and wearing nothing but a pair of tight leather pants.”

“We all looked at each other like… Who is this guy?” she continued. “We were more than a little shook by the sheer audacity of his entrance. Well of course it was Val Kilmer and from that minute on, nobody else stood a chance.”

Tilly’s memory of it just highlights how much of a force he was in making the character his own.

When I think of Jim Morrison I think of Val Kilmer playing Jim Morrison.

5

u/Poesoe 3d ago

VK would appreciate that!

Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison and Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury were both amazing. Good enough to make me forget I was watching actors

19

u/MediocreRooster4190 3d ago

Don't forget Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles.

u/Easy__Captain 3d ago

Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash - I walk the line

u/PUTINS_PORN_ACCOUNT 3d ago

There was far too little pill-popping, cocaine, and dudes sucking each other off in the Queen movie

8

u/[deleted] 3d ago

He looked so similar as well

i was an extra on the doors movie and Val/Jim sprayed a bunch of beer at me on multiple takes. finally Val saunters over in character between takes after PA's wipe me down for like the 4th time and says, languidly "Hey man, sorry about he beer ya know..." I say, "uh, yeah, it's ok Jim" and he turns to walk away, then spins around and says, "ya know what, actually, I dont really care at all."

Based just for his performance in HEAT

u/OptimalWallaby8153 3d ago

Doors was peak Oliver Stone as well, nothing he's done since has been anywhere near as good

(although U-Turn was fucking awesome)

u/Ophukk 3d ago

Natural Born Killers came out three years after The Doors, so I wouldn't say "nothing"...

u/OptimalWallaby8153 2d ago

ehhhhhhh, nbk was just ok and hasn't exactly aged well - lightning rod film at the time, but less impressive over time

3

u/Ophukk 2d ago

Here's where we agree to disagree.

0

u/OptimalWallaby8153 2d ago

I mean, as a parody of the media circus it's good, but the media circus getting worse and worse making nbk's critique of it more and more accurate over time isn't necessarily a reflection of film quality, more a reflection of how we as a society continue to fail

1

u/jerrydrakejr 13h ago

The movie was so prescient it makes it low quality?

10

u/Soladification 3d ago

He also punched a woman in the face during the audition so.....

8

u/_gotmoxie_ 3d ago

And threw her to the ground too! But it’s ok because it was Hollywood!

6

u/samaagfg 3d ago

Wow

Legend

RIP

u/Ambitious-Concern-42 3d ago

Good yes. In tune yes. But don't tell me it can't be told from the real thing.

8

u/vandrokash 3d ago

Thats the narrative this week buddy boy, get with the program!

1

u/Hugh_Jampton 3d ago

Shhhhhhhh

10

u/buncharobots 3d ago

He also beat an actress on set and ruined her career. Why do y'all worship assholes who commit violence just because he can pretend to be someone else??

Is all of Reddit complete Nancy boys or just this comment section ?

u/cozy_pantz 3d ago

Too bad he was such a jerk.

2

u/Deeboozer63 3d ago

Great actor his performance in “The Doors” was stellar!!

2

u/Disastrous-Bet-8813 3d ago

I think also, Kilmer and his mates had a band when they were younger that performed Doors songs. The man knew the wheelhouse

2

u/EagleDre 3d ago

He was so good that when I think of the Doors or Morrison I only visualize Val

2

u/Sameshoedifferentday 3d ago

I remember being really annoyed that he was going to play Jim Morrison. I started that film thinking that there was no way he could do it. 10 minutes later I was hooked. That’s not the only time he’s done that, it was the same with Doc Holiday.

2

u/SweetWithHeat 3d ago

Interesting

2

u/Potential-Judgment-9 3d ago

They were high af

2

u/AlienInUnderpants 3d ago

Almost as good as that Nick Rivers fella.

2

u/Asleep-Goose-5768 3d ago

He was such an underrated actor. He really deserved an Oscar, he was amazing. RIP Val Kilmer.

2

u/LoddyDoddee 3d ago

I watched that movie practically every day one summer when I was a teenager.

2

u/BradJeffersonian 2d ago

Now the mescaline is kicking in!

2

u/Any-External-6221 2d ago

His performance in this movie will always be the barometer for acting in biopics.

2

u/GenRN817 3d ago

Such a beautiful man and such an accomplished performer. RIP.

1

u/VirginiaLuthier 3d ago

I heard he made a tape and got in a car with Stone and bet him he couldn't tell the difference....I think Val had his own Doors cover band

1

u/Sandel494 2d ago

This morning it was 22 songs. Now 50...

1

u/Easy__Captain 2d ago

The Doors have more then 22 songs

1

u/Sandel494 2d ago

Yes, but was it necessary to learn ALL of them? Im just curios, what is the truth?

1

u/Easy__Captain 2d ago

It's not "all of them" but, If you want to portray an artist, it's important to know their work, not just the hits, but their entire body of work. Know the artist's vocal intonations, different emotions, styles, and interests. I think it was essential to learn at least 50 songs by heart to truly embody the role and deliver the performance he did.

Thanks to that, we still talk about it today.

1

u/Sandel494 2d ago

Im not questioning what he did, i just read different songs numbers on the net recently. My godness.

1

u/Dangerous-Ad-4103 1d ago
