Question I was told something feels off about the anatomy. Any advice?

Post image

It's supposed to be Dante from the new Devil may cry anime. Thanks for any advice.

The teeth are not curving around the face but appear flat. The mouth should be curving around the teeth.

The brow and cheekbones should project forward of the eyes especially on the far eye. The far eye appears flat rather than cylindrical.

I recommend trying this pose in the mirror, taking a photo or trying to find a photo in the same pose.

This lighting doesn't seem to be working. The shadows around the nose don't seem consistent with the lighting everywhere else.

I cannot take credit for this image as it is one I found. Try adding this “lightning shape” to your work. It’ll give it more dimension.

I only got one thing to say. I've recently learned this view and one thing I noticed is that about half way down the eye there's an invisible "triangle". Here's an example.

I'm still learning but you get the picture.

I think it’s the mouth. I feel like it is a little bit more on the right side of the image than needed (left side of face, with respect to the character).

Cover the mouth and see, you’ll realise that the art looks perfect.

The mouth is sort of facing front. And once you change the position of mouth, you would have to make certain changes to the shading of lower face, specifically the shading of chin.

Additionally, and this might not be too relevant, but the right eye seems a little off due to a sharp point at the upper eyelid. Though that might be correct. Anyway, it doesn’t affect the anatomy as in your question.

Finally, Amazing work. Great colour choices. Exceptional shading talent. And the character pops well die to the work in background. Well done.

Just flip the canvas then you’ll see what should be fixed

I couldnt. I know it was weird but I didnt know how to fix it. These comments helped.

I think it’s three things. The left edge of the face is too straight. It should go in a bit at the eye and a bit when coming to the chin. The other thing is the mouth. I think it should be bigger in some way. I’m not the greatest with mouths, it takes me a lot of trial and error so I can’t tell you exactly how to fix it without tracing over for an hour. The last thing is the skull/head. I think you add a bit of hair to the top right to make it a bit more round looking or bring the top down slightly.

I dont mind working on a same art again. I am trying to fix my mistakes as I feel fixing my mistakes will help me improve more. It will make me more cautions when I will make a new artwork and ofcourse I will have more information on how to correctly do it. Thank you.

Flip the canvas. The mistakes will be more apparent. The eyes are misaligned and the eyeline, noseline and mouth don't seem parallel to each other. They're pretty crooked.

Also you gotta use larger brush strokes for shading when painting. And you need to practice shading the head more. A commenter posted a useful image here. Also practice the Asaro head with different lighting.

idk who that is. I took a reference from Pinterest that was some singer I think? Maybe he resembles him. Or I messed up enough to make it a totally different person I was referencing from.

The head might look better if you search Loomis head, especially those that are 3D, giving you a grasp of how face proportions might look. Besides that, focus on where is light coming from, this allows for better focus on shadows and see the facescape easier.

Nice drawing! It’s subtle stuff. Things are lining up. The nose is tilted going up screen left and the moth is almost coming to a front view. I’ll do a simple drawover tomorrow and get back to you. ☺️
