Advice?

made a sheath for my axe as my first real project. Looks like ass, but is functional (for now). I think I’ll try again at some point for more practice and maybe change up the style of it. Had a dog of a time with the stitching. I only have a 6 prong chisel so I have weird angles in the stitching, ugly but ok. My hardest part was trying to line up the holes through three pieces of thick leather as my chisel only fits through two. I used an awl to push a hole through using the chiseled holes as a guide, but some of them are still all caddy wompus. Any tips and tricks for my next project?

Resolene for Tack?

Hey people,

I recently asked a question regarding which leather thickness I should try for Slobber bars for a horse. I received many helpful answers and did a test pair.

I sealed it with pure beeswax (even though I kinda messed up the process and its darker in some places than others, I hope the next pair will look better) and treated it with my leather conditioner I bought for my saddle.

Since the beeswax made the leather pretty stiff, I was wondering if I perhaps should try resolene to seal and waterproof the leather. I wonder however, if that would be safe for the horse, should it take the slobber bar into its mouth and chew on the leather (because my horse does that).

Should I keep experimenting with the beeswax, since its the least "toxic" option for waterproofing or should I switch to Resolene? And would Resolene be safe for a horse?

Thanks in advance and I promise, once I manage a semi good looking pair of slobbers, I'll post my process^^

Rhylen

EDIT: I wrote "waterproof", but I should have used "water-resistant". My fault, english is not my native language^^

Wallet question

So I make some simple card wallets and clipper wallets from templates to sell at farmers markets but I've have been seeing more and more of people making wallets with coin pockets in them from what I see where I live we just keeps coins in our pocket as loose change because it usually makes a wallet far to bulky. Any have any thoughts on this?

Using an Airbrush to Apply Tan-Kote on Leather: How to Thin & Clean?

Hello everyone, I recently purchased an airbrush for leather finishing and usually use Tan-Kote as my top coat. I’m not sure how to properly thin it for spraying. Also, what’s the best way to clean the airbrush afterward so it doesn’t clog? Has anyone tried this before? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Pretty basic skinner, but with an antler handle and brass bolster. I also set up the sheath so that it can be work crossdraw or horizontal along the belt.

Medieval bellows

Hello, i was wondering if there was an historical correct way to fuse 2 pieces of leather together? A while back i was looking for leather to make some medieval forge bellows but i couldn't find a piece of letter long enough to wrap arround in 1 go. Did they might glued it? Stiched it? Anyone an idea? Thanks already for the help!

Attaching a shoulder strap

Hello everyone, A friend of mine just gifted me this beautiful bag (pic 1). Unfortunately, it doesn’t have any kind of (shoulder) strap to carry it, just the handle. It also doesn’t have something to attach a strap to. I did a bit of research and found the clasps in the third picture. Can they support the weight (laptop, some papers etc.) and work on that kind of bag in general? Do they have a name? I can only find a few listings where they can be bought but most look quite flimsy and not sturdy enough so I would be really grateful if someone knew how to find better ones. They do seem to be used on briefcases etc sometimes.

Thanks in advance for the help. I am completely new to this topic and am honestly a bit overwhelmed by what can be found online.

I have these Altama boots and I'd like to keep them from drying up.

I'm not sure if they're 100% leather/hide, so I dont know whether I should apply vaseline or something else.

Thanks !

My backstitch is hideous - looking for advice & resources to learn

Post image
29 Upvotes

I am very new to this and am trying to learn backstitches but just can’t seem to get the angle correct. They seem to always end up flat rather than angled.

I followed this guide https://youtu.be/eo9eJsmGtW8 and I think where I am messing up is understanding if the thread should be going under or over the original stitch. Does anyone have a good video that explains the over/under sequence of the backstitch? Or maybe it’s how I’m pulling the thread taut?

Any advice or resources to learn would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you!!

What is the bestway to stretch leather?

I just stitched this holster I'm working on and realized that I made it slightly tight through the barrel area for the pistol. It is veg tan leather and I was wondering what the best method of stretching it is? I've simply used water before but don't want this to get hard. Any advice would be appreciated.

Leather help

Hey all,

I went to Tandy to ask if they had something similar and the lady directed me to precuts opposed to the leather type. I bought this precut from the leather guy but I want bigger pieces of this leather. Can you help me find something similar? I am just beginning and I'm not exactly sure what I am looking for other than what leather guy lists.

I fell in love with the purple color. Can you help me understand what I am looking for in the future? Where can I buy leather like this?

Thank you!

Trying to figure out what I am doing wrong during dye process

Post image
33 Upvotes

I apologize for assaulting everyone's eyes this early in the morning with my terrible project, but it's the very first time I am working with leather and I am having a lot of trouble figuring out how to get a deep, rich dye color on the pieces as you can see.

I wet the leather before dying it, and I tried applying the dye with a cotton tool and also with a sponge (there are multiple coats on each piece).

The black dye stuck a little better, but the brown dye barely took it seems. In both case it looks terrible 😂

Any advice or input would be of great help, and I appreciate any time taken to respond!
