That surface finish looks horrible to be honest.

"Paint grade"

Yea you could tell how dull the blade got by the end. A cnc sander/polisher would make this absolutely shine I bet though

They'll run it under a planer/belt sander to smooth it out, I hope...

It's not the surface that looks bad. It's the inner bits.

And do what? The board was flat, it's the tear out on the cut parts

Yeah, this looks fun to sand

Lol. Came here to say that exactly.

This comment is like finishing drywall and then being like, "the paint looks terrible"

That's gonna be a lot of fun to get in there and sand all the hyperbolic surfaces and 0.01mm gaps

In a situation like this, do you give the machine a design and it picks the most efficient route or does it receive commands like make this cut then make this cut then make this cut?

Depends on the program. A lot of programs you select operations and surfaces to apply those operations to. For examples of operations, you have things like drilling which is straight up and down and then milling which can take on a few different patterns of movement from swirling to consecutive swipes at material. Some machines/software you'd give it a specific path to follow but that's more like a laser cutter or a knife plotter.

The machine itself is dumb. A CNC is a milling machine that has the movement controlled by motors and software, rather than you turning a wheel for each axis.

The most basic ones you give instructions using coordinates: Start at 0,0,0 > Move to 10,10,15 > move to 30,10,15 etc. You gotta enter every step in order, manually.

More advanced ones can do more precise movements, and the software to control it can do more. The software could recommend or shortcut some moves for you, but it’s not gonna be perfect. Kinda like slicers for 3d printing, if you’re familiar, or Excel auto-completing a formula.

I feel like the speeds and feeds are messed up, I think there's some massaging you could do to get much less tear out

I must be 80 years old with now much I dislike this

now you need one that sands like magic

THIS is what you picked to show people?
The feed is too high and Z zero is off.
Is there a video where it does a good job that we could see?

Wow. That looks like shit.

Slowing down the movements (relative to the bit speed) and using compressed air or a vacuum to clear the shavings would probably go a long way.

Those last four cuts were pretty cool

None of that looks clean.

Magic? It’s what it’s supposed to do

Is the Z height set correctly for the majority of the cutting? Looks like it is too low based on how the bit is leaving a lip on the edge of the cut.

u/RedIcarus1 20d ago

Z is too low, and the feed is too fast.
They need to find someone who can do a better setup before putting out videos.

When does the magic start?

Maybe as a rough for something...

Didn't draw a dick. 2/10.

All this hate for whatever this machine is is making me wonder what this is supposed to look like, has anyone got a video?

I'm saving this video in case I ever travel back in time. I'm going to make some medieval craftsman that spent a week doing something similar weep.

The cuts look so FLUFFY!

Where is the magic?
