It's a nuclear powered wessel

u/Ambitious_Toe_4357 17d ago

Is that why it needs such a large

u/CaptainLegot 19d ago

It's hard to know what's going on in this sub, both mods are bots but why

I didn’t know the escorted ship could actually dock into the rear of the ice breaker. That’s awesome and pretty clever since then both engines can probably be used.

Nor did I. Then again it never crossed my mind you'd have an icebreaker with another ship (I thought they just did their own thing up there)

Its like pushing your buddy from behind to break thru a crowd. My guess is the ice is really thick and that if there was a gap, the giant chunks would just float back up and eventually causing damage... but I don't get the opportunity to play ice breaker in my 16' Carolina skiff in Louisiana.

The Philadelphia Eagles has entered the chat

A lot of seamen choose to dock into the rear

1

u/thedudefromsweden 19d ago

Does it? The video cuts too soon 😔 I thought it was just driving really close, I assumed to avoid ice falling in between them.

Saw this in a documentary once. It has the ability to dock so that both ships power is used to break ice

Interesting, thank you!

Thanks to whoever didn't add that "yo ho" song as a soundtrack to this.

It is refreshing to not hear any shit music at all in the background.

3

u/VerStannen 19d ago

So someone created this sub r/coolvideosnomusic.

This would be a great addition.

It is unnerving to feel the ice cracking and shifting underfoot while ice fishing. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like with an ice breaker passing by.

They are standing way too close. Those giant ships create giant waves, in this case under the ice. I wouldn't want to stand there when a giant wave lifts the ice I'm standing on....

u/pointless-pen 18d ago

I don't really know what I thought first, someone has to be behind that camera to film it. But to see how close they really were in the end made my heart skip a beat, never excepted that

Like killer whales? 😉

So I guessed from that atom symbol on the side. Russia is the only country that has them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear-powered_icebreaker

The patriotic color scheme is a nice touch, but hard to appreciate given the last few years.

4

u/The_Tank_Racer 19d ago

I honestly thought they'd be slower!

4

u/LostDream_0311 19d ago

So they are able to keep going by a combination of weight, initial momentum before hitting the ice and screw RPMs? I would imagen the ship's screws would eventually not be able to execute enough force to push the ship forward given the ice friction and mass. Can someone please ELI5?

I get the impression you’re thinking an ice breaker works as if the bow is a knife parting the ice as it drives into it. In reality they have what is called a “spoon bow” (pause at 10 seconds to see it) which is designed for the ship try to ride up onto the ice (in reality forcing the ice down) so it uses its immense weight to break to ice apart to clear a path. They can start and stop in pack ice at will, but it does take some time to pick up speed.

4

u/LostDream_0311 19d ago

Ahh right. I WAS just thinking the brute force pike bow of an ice breaker. I didn't know the spoon bow excited, but it makes sence. Thanks for the info.

3

u/GimmeCoffeeeee 19d ago

Yea they break the ice with their own weight and then slide it below the ice on the sides

3

u/HyperbolicSoup 19d ago

I’m a little surprised that it’s not being pulled by 40 brown bears

2

u/bullwinkle8088 18d ago

They upgraded, Atomic Bears.

1

u/HyperbolicSoup 18d ago

Dang, that ship has a reactor?

1

u/Armybob112 11d ago

Well, the side says росатомфпот (rosatomflot)

I’d say it’s Russian, atomic and Part of a fleet.

3

u/SombraMonkey 19d ago

Their what?

1

u/Monoceras 18d ago

They will use it to invade ukraine soon, too.

1

u/Santibag 18d ago

I really wonder what's inside the building part of that ship. It looks so wide! Unless it's filled with mechanical stuff, it can provide tons of area for the crew to do stuff!

Also, the captain's cabin looks like it has great view! 😍

1

u/NDAsaysNO 18d ago

Wait are both engines running or just the rear ship

1

u/Familiar_Muffin_1566 18d ago

Do on the snowmobile taking the video has some trust in that ice.

1

u/bitstoatoms 17d ago

More impressed by it's fart
