I've worked on a few old machines and have alway wondered where the mint ice cream green and cherry red color combo came from. I've seen it on several brands from several countries, same unusual color combo.

Many older machines, like lathes and drills, were painted green, particularly a shade called Reseda Green, because of its perceived ability to reduce eye strain and make dirt/oil less visible

Lots of the green paint from the 50s was leftover military surplus too. Red is super cheap to make too because it's just iron oxide for pigment.

I might be talking out my ass, about 90% of what I say is 10% made up.

You're not wrong there but, the green, its not a military color, it's... unnatural.

Doesn't copper or a copper mix turn that color after a while of oxidizing? Like the statue of Liberty and all that?

The paint used was likely led based which can produce a wide variety of colors, not copper oxide

I think the basic idea is a uniform colour makes it easy to spot coolent and lubrication leaks and other little problems before they become big problems, and then you got the basic corrosion protection that paint gives. Then like anything branding will come into play, if your going to be painting and you are selling your products, you want them to be recognisable long into the future, you want the young guys recognising what you are and what you do because every so often one of them becomes the guy or gal that places the orders for new machines, so why change from the way you did things last year? or last decade? until their becomes a real reason to change you just stick with it.

Are they typical tractor colors? John deere and case… Like, possibly supplied to farmers to maintain tractors? Then used on machines out of convenience and price.

That's an intriguing guess. It's definitely not a John Deere green, I asked Charlene but, the Case red is very close. I wonder if there was a tractor manufacturer that used that Mint color. Great question!

I would be terrified being anywhere near that thing.

Yeah, this machine is begging to Final Destination someone’s ass.

Now on SAW this old house II, the guys must fully assemble the barbes wire machine.

But it looks like Jimmy missed a few nuts. Uh oh, Rob got his Carhartt hoodie stuck on some wire. Aaaand he's a fine red mist.

Welp... see you next time on SAW this old house II.

Someone with a neck tie.

3

Especially when it’s on full speed!

3

u/satori0320 17d ago

Right... The entire video, I was expecting a shirt tail to appear being pull into those gears.

That’s incredible

I want to see the machine the guy filming has.

That machine is a freaking marvel wow

Loved all the gears, springs and jibjabs!

I liked the bolt cutter holder near the end.

isn't automation wonderful?! I love to imagine the foul-ups when the first prototypes of machines like this are tested. I did a stint at an airconditioning factory where they told me of a new design for some pipework that would have been perfect, except for the fact that it was so convoluted it had to be cut off the bending machine to remove it!

I want this dude to narrate my life.

He sounds like a (ex?) Hutterite.

Judging from their page they're still a Hutterite. With a TikTok.

u/OwOs420 17d ago

Very satisfying!

The narrator's accent is wonderful

6

u/Dan_Glebitz 17d ago

Poetry in motion.

u/emiltsch 17d ago

Did that guy speak in 6 different accents or was it just me?

And yes, that machine is a death trap indeed. Final Destination for sure.

Sweet. 👍

I like how the emergency stop is over and behind all the spinning gears and whirly bits.

2

u/ph1l_91 17d ago

Not just the emergency stop but all the controls.

3

u/trik1guy 17d ago

10 bucks if you parkour speedrun over the thing

Danger Zone!

Today on how it’s made barb wire.

I love watching these machines, I used to operate a 7 strand wire buncher and it was marvellous to watch and scary af to be next to

2

u/kveggie1 17d ago

I am impressed with the safety features of this machine.

The nightmare of the Occupational Health and Safety Department.

Wow, that's Fargo out!

u/Im40ozToFreedom 17d ago

Watch this twice. Impressive isn't a strong enough word for this engineering and craftsmanship. Thanks for posting!

2

u/scottsplace5 17d ago

I'd bet the slow speed is for oiling.

1

u/screamtracker 17d ago

Getting flashbacks to the laundromat owners counting their quarter buckets. And Coke machines 🫅

1

u/A_Unqiue_Username 17d ago

This guy should narrate a "How it's made" reboot. I really miss that show.

1

u/OldDiehl 17d ago

WTF? It was 85'/hour the last time this was posted. Did they speed up the video?

1

u/Snakes_AnonyMouse 17d ago

"phenomenal machine, unreal"

No sir, it's definitely reeling, you just showed me the gears that turn the spool to reel on the wire

1

u/Raaazzle 17d ago

Holy shit, a concrete floor AND a roof! This is some QS9000-level stuff.

1

u/Mr-Potatolegs 16d ago

This is fascinating to watch.

1

u/TraditionPast4295 16d ago

I like how you have to lean over a bunch of exposed gears and spinning shafts to use the control panel. Brilliant design.

1

u/scotyb 16d ago

Love this channel!

1

u/DizzySimple4959 13d ago

The whole time I thought about if someone tripped and fell into that last spinning piece.

1

u/Jeni_Sui_Generis 13d ago

Imagine the feed system failing at full speed. Loose Barbwires whipping at 1000rpm everywhere.

1

u/b1ack1ight 17d ago

I fucking hate engineers but at the same time I fucking love engineers. You know?
