Where do I start?

If you had to organize these rooms- any advice is appreciated. ADHD here so can’t just commit to doing in all in one day.

Form a walkable pathway

i would start tackling it in chunks/stacks, starting in the very front. pull out boxes, see if what’s in them are keepable. if not, toss it or donate it. i’d probably do that until you have a clear vision on what’s staying in the room with a reasonable enough area to move/furnish

Small chunks is the way to go. See what you can accomplish in 15 minutes a day (or whatever is reasonable enough to do consistently).

ADHD girly here, keep your tennis shoes on. You’re more likely to get stuff done and keep moving around with tennis shoes on. Start with items closest to the door and make a keep, maybe, and get rid of pile. The items on the get rid of pile, put in your trunk right away and take to a donation center. Once finished go over the maybe pile once again so see if you’ve changed your mind about any items. That should give you a more manageable pile to work with of only items you want to keep:)

AuDHD here. Yes, keep the shoes on. Different piles are the key. Sort things first before digging into them deeper. Throw away everything that’s not going to be needed or used in the next year. Never save things for «when I …», or «in case …».

u/Savings-Truth7605 1d ago

Yessss you get it! I have become such a minimalist because of this. It’s way better to spend more on an item you love and will have forever than to just buy something temporarily and have to figure out what you’re going to do with it in a year or two. In the long run this has actually saved me so much money and made cleaning a breeze

2

u/Lady0905 1d ago

Yup, exactly this 👌 I do the same for clothing.

u/GhostieBeastie 1d ago

By selling me that giraffe, for starters.

3

u/AndrewLAFan14 1d ago

You have to start off with the giraffe. I think it's occupying a lot of space so, give it to me hahahaha

3

u/creeperstew 1d ago

Put on some music or a podcast, pick a box or item and start

3

u/yadigczech-12 1d ago

For starters you can ship me that giraffe. 😅

u/Timely-Profile1865 1d ago

With the giraffe, always start with the giraffe

2

u/peachpwr421 1d ago

This reminds me of the friends episode where Joey buy a bunch of random stuff with his first big paycheck, primarily based off the giant giraffe

2

u/B-e-a-u 1d ago

You have cool stuff, just needs to get rid of all the clutter like boxes and paperwork. Spend a day coming up with a room layout and find shelves. I think you could go for that organized chaos chic look.

2

u/BettyBoopsLeftHeel 1d ago

By mailing me that absolute fire giraffe, first of all.

2

u/PsstErika 1d ago

You don’t need all that stuff in your life if it’s being stored like that. Start throwing out 10 things a day. Once you’re on a roll with that, increase to 20 things a day in the trash and also get a big bin and start putting another 10 things a day to take to Goodwill or Salvation Army.

At a museum or antique road show

Start with an estate sale

2

u/Dryder3925 1d ago

Just break it down day by day, dude. I just moved into my apartment too and I want to show it off but I got to clean up a little bit first 😅

Design around the giraffe. It's everything. ~ongo gablogian

1

u/Your_Soup 1d ago

Start nearest to the front door and park a rollaway as close as you can.

1

u/bubblyH2OEmergency 1d ago

I was worried you wouldn't have a 🦒

You have to start at the door way.

1

u/sharkslionsbears 1d ago

Well you’ve got the mandatory near-lifesize wooden giraffe, so I’d say you’re off to a great start already.

u/Zorogashx 1d ago

Sent me the MacBook Pro please

u/surfintheinternetz 1d ago

u/EnvironmentalCap2217 1d ago

Selling that giraffe, if it's African

1

u/tbru104 1d ago

Leave it alone

1

u/AggravatingCry7101 1d ago

the shit needs to go lol. are you keeping all this stuff?

form a keep and ditch pile. start selling stuff or dumping it if you have no time. its not worth holding onto.

theres no space in there to organize anything, stuff needs to go.

Storage unit ? Garage ? anywhere to remove ALL the room contents... then clean, then triage what returns and what goes elsewhere - Best of Success 😁

1

u/vharnz666 1d ago

For my OCDs to kick in I’d put unboxed or boxed items in the garage to start… leave some kitchen items in the kitchen just when I get hungry I can just go and munch

1

u/Dry_Possession_4776 1d ago

By opening that window.

1

u/Middle-Excitement890 1d ago

Looks great I wouldn’t change a thing !

1

u/nickcash 1d ago

what kind of dog is that?

1

u/sophos313 1d ago

Is this the “Safe Guy’s” newest addition?

1

u/Maelefique 1d ago

I assume it's the giraffe we're talking to? 😅

So, first, remove the "decapitation device" on your ceiling. 😅

A guy at work had a room like that, full of “valuables” that he couldn’t part with but needed to get rid of.

One day he hung a piece of paper on the door with the date he hung the paper and would write any days he went in there to get something.

After a month he had entered the room zero times. So he put a calendar next to the door and marked every Friday on the calendar. That was his reminder to take one trunk load of stuff to goodwill after work.

It took him about 6 months but he cleaned out the room and now has a man cave to play video games.

u/fire_spittin_mittins 1d ago

Wise words from a short. “If this was covered in sht, would i clean it or throw it away” start there.

1

u/modernmovements 1d ago

I thought the safe guy was back for a second. Somewhere under all of that is 7 couches and 3 short floor lamps.

1

u/The_Thirteenth_Floor 1d ago

Stop buying shit.

1

u/musicgray 1d ago

Start? It is perfect.

1

u/2ninjasCP 1d ago

In your head divide the room in four distinct sections and attach one area at a time.

1

u/SolidPurple7 1d ago

Put like things with like things.

1

u/Spiritual-Barracuda1 1d ago

I do estate sales and doing this will save you hours.

  1. Get 3 full sized trash cans and line them with sturdy trash bags.

Can #1 Trash
Can #2 Recycle
Can #3 Donate (you can pack these items in boxes but label what is in the box and where it will be donated.

  1. Clear a walkable pathway through the room and enough space for 2 6' folding tables. Every box goes up on the table and is sorted into the cans. Don't start on another box unless the table is clean again.

  2. Make a "one touch" rule and let go of things with no value immediately. Newer books, unless there is a collection. Most china, unless there is a complete set (still mostly worthless), small electronics, all bedding, If you are having trouble making the call due to unknown value, upload a photo to google lens but commit to making a call if you have it your hand.

By sending that giraffe to me.

1

u/Equal_Associate_8646 1d ago

With a nap. Then small sections. Very small.

1

u/narc1s 1d ago

Fellow ADHDer here, grab a box and put everything in that box away. If it can’t go away put it in the area that it will go when the required storage thing is unpacked. Do not touch another box til that first one is unpacked.

Once a box is finished it break it down and put it outside the house or it’s just more clutter that will stress you out.

Good luck dude.

Form a path rent a pod and a dumpster and decide and conquer

1

u/OfTheWild 23h ago

I like to pick a corner and start there. Only focus on that one area. I also have a thing where I remove all "decorations" first. Determine where furniture is going second. Then you can sort/store/toss and finally decorate.

1

u/TopFloorLife 23h ago

Must dress giraffe first my guy

1

u/paczki_dc2 20h ago

by renting a dumpster

1

u/Western_Monitor148 15h ago

Garage sale 😝

1

u/No-Range-7716 11h ago

In the box to the left.. ahem.. but first.. Set up an area for Donate / Bin it / Keep it. Work through one box, working your way up in amount of boxes you can do, and placing items from each box in one of the three areas. Be honest and stay diligent. When your day is done, go donate and bin the two areas. The Keep it selection you organise on another day or when you get back

1

u/Thin_Onion3826 1d ago

Are you doing some kind of unboxing YouTube video ?

0

u/cobrachickenwing 1d ago

Konmari method of organization and decluttering.

Of course it would have been easier if you did this before moving out instead of moving in.

0

u/BadBoyDad 1d ago

I would start by spray painting that giraffe with one solid and bold color. Red. Blue. Yellow. Green. Pink. That’s where I’d start.

1

u/welkover 3h ago

It'd say fuck a girl on the giraffe first, then go on to throwing out 90% of the shit cluttering up the room.
