It’s funny how much work can go into something that most people would just hang on their wall, including me. But I guess that’s the case with all art. That thing is beautiful!

Sweet looking. Probably too rich for my blood. I'd call it a hatchet but whatever. I'd be scared of ruining such a beaut

Nice design and fine execution. I like the curvy shape.
What kind of resist do you use for the etching?

How's it chop wood? /s
Seriously though, nice work. That's gorgeous. Are you making the handle for it, too? If so, what are you planning?

Thank you. Yes I will make the handle which I also adorn with a decorative steel belly plate. You can see some examples in my earlier posts.

That is amazing. How many hours did this take you and how many steel engravings have you done before?

u/Fantasyblades 3d ago
Thanks for the very kind words. This piece took about 80 hours which I did over three weeks to a month. My work is hand acid etching of my artwork into steel, I don't engrave. I have done a number of pieces over the last four years you can see much of my work on my website. guildofthegildedhilt.com

That’s beautiful. What kind of metal is it?

Thank you so much. I shaped the head from a vintage single bit axe so I cannot identify the exact steels used. I did a quick etch first to confirm the location of the hardened bit.

This is master craftsman level work in an unusual medium (I think). I don’t doubt there are some high-end galleries that would be interested in representing you, most likely in the Southwest US. I’ve been in quite a few exhibits and it’s amazing what people will collect if the work is exceptional. Your work reminded me of knives I saw in SOFA. I’m not sure about now but they used to have three SOFA Exhibits around the country, including in Phoenix (or thereabouts), Chicago, and NYC. These are the top shows. You can research the galleries that setup exhibits in these big shows, pick the ones that might be interested and contact them. I went this route, built up a following over many years that eventually led to museum acquisitions including the Smithsonian. Best of luck!
