Overdone Parking in Handicapped spaces when not handicapped
Just went to the post office and watched a guy with no handicap Tag park in the handicap spot. Passenger jumps out and goes in the post office. A few moments later, an elderly woman with a clear handicap tag pulls into the parking lot looking for that spot. Of course it is occupied by the person illegally parking there. She begins to try and park in another spot, which is much more difficult and does not have an accessible ramp. I go out and tell the guy to move because the handicap person is trying to park. By the time he moves, she’s already parked in another spot. The poor woman had a walker, didn’t have access to the ramp, and it took her forever to get into the post office. Totally ridiculous and totally avoidable if the lazy ass guy just parked in another spot while his passenger was in the post office. So tired of entitled assholes.

Parking in handicap parking spots is based on the honor system since enforcement cannot be done 24/7. If you are not handicap just do not park there. We have signs in our complex for restricted parking areas and it is violated EVERY DAY.

I don’t like when people park in handicap spots either if they aren’t truly handicapped, BUT not every handicap is visible. Also, they may have a hanging placard but maybe forgot to remove it from another vehicle.

If you don’t have the tag, you can’t park. Anyone who has a tag will absolutely understand that, even if they forget theirs. They know the struggle all too well.

True, but if they are in a hurry and usually have their tag, it’s possible that they could have forgotten that they didn’t have it with them. I’m certain that’s happened

Not every handicap is visible, not the parking space. I.e. you don't always know if someone is disabled or not.

Every handicap placard is visible inside a car.
(I know what your comment means; I'm saying it's irrelevant. You have to have a placard displayed in your card regardless of what type of disability you have.)

This one was so clearly marked , the only thing missing was runway lights flashing. Second, I asked the effing guy if he had a handicap tag and he said no. I pointed out the old lady struggling and asked him to move. He APOLOGIZED and moved. It was too late, the lady had already parked.

You should have specified this in your post. My comment was that some people ARE handicapped. Just because they aren’t crippled or in a wheelchair doesn’t mean they don’t have a handicap

No, and no. It's so people can park there and have less trouble walking. Hell people can have problems that only allow them to walk short distances, but those short distances they might be able to do fine.

There's an app called Parking Mobility that walks you through taking pictures and submitting a complaint to the local jurisdiction. I use it all the time. Just be aware that you have to take pictures through the app in order for it to work properly. There's no way to add photos after the fact.

If I was a traffic enforcement, I would camp in these parking lots and fine these people to the maximum extent possible. These and those who use placards that are not theirs.

My apartment complex has two handicapped tenants and four handicap spots. UberEats drivers know they can’t use the handicap spots… so instead they park in the striped spaces in between the spots, then there are two spots that can’t be used

She was fine on the walker. When she got to the doors, I went out and opened each one for her. The only way to have done more would have been to carry her in .

Well I can agree with you that it is sad that the elderly lady with the walker had to park in a regular spot. You maybe jumping to conclusions regarding the gentleman who took the spot. Depending on the jurisdiction the car may not have a handicap sticker or plate. The handicap status maybe registered with the State or Province. Also the man may not have a visible disability

No I know, I was saying that to the person that thought you were being presumptuous about the illegal Parker. If he did have an “invisible illness” and wasn’t legally required to display a placard, he wouldn’t have gone out to move his car.

I spoke to the guy and he didn’t have any handicap anything. He was sitting there because it was convenient to him while he waited for his passenger.

Not defenses at all, I just am smart enough to know that not all handicaps are physical. And it is actually illegal to ask somebody about their disabilities.So once again, you need to mind your business.

In what universe is it a crime to ask someone about their disability?
And, in what universe are handicapped parking permits issued for non physical handicaps? My wife is 100% disabled, and has been for 25 years, and she can’t get a handicapped parking permit.

You’ve taken that out of context. Clearly there are cases where it is necessary to ask about disabilities. One of those times would be when someone applies for disability. And please, provide the name of a governmental entity that gives out handicapped parking permits for people who don’t have a physical handicap.

Well, we are talking about THIS time. And THIS time, they weren't applying for anything. They were in a parking space, and somebody who doesn't work for ANY of those entities came up to question those people. And I mean physical, as in, they don't have to have a walker or be limping or missing a leg to use a handicap placard/spot. They could be at risk due to heart disease or become easily fatigued because they have MS. They could have just gotten out of the hospital because they had a stroke and are getting driven to the post office by their neighbor. Just because someone doesn't look disabled doesn't mean that they aren't

It's illegal to park in a handicap spot without a proper tag.
It is however not illegal for op to tell someone to move out of a handicap spot if they are not displaying a handicap tag.
Nowhere in ops original post did they say they asked about their disabilities.

I was pointing out to you that op never said in their original post that they asked what the offender's handicap was.
What op saw was someone parking in a designated handicapped spot who was not displaying the proper placard (or license tag) for them to park there.
And that it's not illegal for op to advise they move.
I never took a "good" or "bad" side, I just pointed out a flaw in your argument.
I'm not sure why you have a problem with someone saying...hey, move it along you are parked there illegally.
By the way, you are false in stating it's illegal to ask someone about their disability.
Joe blow citizen off the street can ask people about their disabilities all day long. Is it rude, sure, is it illegal no.
And now I have pointed out a second flaw in your argument.
eta - To your "can't enforce the law" comment, I am assuming you do not live in the US, and know nothing about Citizen's Arrests.

I saw a Lamborghini double parked in 2 handicapped spots. Guy came out of the liquor store with 15 people around his car. If ever I needed a piss disk....

Unfortunately where I live there are a lot of handicapped people so the spots are filled most of the time. Being disabled with a placard I know this all too well. I only use mine as a last resort because I like to walk when I can.
