I commute by bike. Down this public road is a shortcut to my apartment that saves me from taking a dangerous highway, but this dude has started blocking it with his three vehicles every day.

Who owns the land the shortcut is on?

Our apartment complex owns the area and fence. The city owns the roadway

Are they blocking it to prevent other strangers that don't live there cutting through?

Not sure how that would work considering there isn’t security for any of the apartment entrances, including the main ones

Wouldn't it be a shame if some horrible person filled all those door handles with dog shit

This seems to need more information.

It doesn't appear to be a through way as it looks like the road terminates here anyways.

I don't see the problem sorry.

It’s a perspective issue. The middle fence segment is offset, creating a ~3’ parallel gap in the fencing with a footpath running through it.

If your on a bike cant you just go around the truck to get there?

As a cyclist I get why thats a bit annoying but doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

There really isn’t a way around the truck without going into the other house’s yard. That sidewalk is uneven and drops about 6” into that tree which has a lot of roots making the terrain dangerous.

I could walk my bike I guess but im sorry, I thought this was ‘mildly infuriating’. Not ‘serious problems with no alternative solutions.’

I think people forget what subreddit they’re on. It’s nice of people to offer suggestions to the problem, but this subreddit is for complaining about mildly annoying things and not for asking advice on said annoying things. The gate keeping is also incredibly frustrating.

You seem a little offend that Im suggesting a solution to your problem.

Sorry won't happen again. Continue to be miserable over a non-issue.

No no they remember things here are either not mildly annoying because they should be the all triggering worse thing ever or they say there is a solution so you shouldn’t be mildly annoyed which is exactly where they are.

For once this is spot on. It’s a minor annoyance because some douchbags think the world is there own

It's not a big deal. There's a side walk to the left of the truck that could be easily used.

I spy a perfect opening on the sidewalk, ride up on the curb and around the asshole

The sidewalk terminates with a half-foot drop into a tree. It’s not navigable to anyone who isn’t on a mountain bike

so walk the bike around them?

2

u/ChronicMasterBaiting 1d ago

What a dick! Now, is that pathway to the left usable?

If the road is public, this looks like serious parking violations, call non-emergency and report the parking violations.

Is it possible that the "shortcut" was actually part of a private property and the owner of this private property got tired of people invading his property and decided to block it off?

Because it seems like this area behind the cars is fenced, and I don't think it would be if it was still part of the public road.

u/FoxGaming 1d ago

No. The fencing belongs to the apartment complex, and there’s a pretty deliberate fence gap and foot path. The fence runs the entire perimeter of the apartment. The guy who owns the cars has like 3 more and has them parked up his driveway and along the street.

2

u/seyesmic-waves 1d ago

Well, if that's the case and you know who it was can you maybe talk about it with the complex admin? Because then the cars could even be towed.

2

u/Hour_Perspective_884 1d ago

The fence is the apts. but road is public and terminates at the fence.

No ones going to tow those or ticket them.

The op can get off her bike and walk around the truck on the public side walk to the opening in the fence but would rather come here and complain about a problem that doesn't exist.

2

u/seyesmic-waves 1d ago

Yeah I don't really know how things work over there even because I don't even know where that is, in my country you can't just park on public roads nor in front of passages, here you could definitely get towed for that.

I do agree that in the case of a bike you could probably walk around it but if it was a wheelchair or electric stroller or something of the kind it may be harder or even impossible to so I think this may still be an issue if that is an actual access to the aparment complex.

2

u/Hour_Perspective_884 1d ago

If its a stroller or wheelchair you should be on the side walk already anyway which the vehicles aren't blocking.

And given the condition of the fence and the fact there doesn't seem to be a gate or a lock this 'opening' seems to be a general connivence (and security issue) and not actual access to the apt.

It's just a hole in the fence and she should be happy its even there.

1

u/seyesmic-waves 1d ago

That makes sense, but at the same time we can't see the conditions of the sidewalk as a whole and at least here there are areas where the sidewalk is so bad you're often forced to walk with wheelchairs and strollers on the street because it's safer or its simply impossible to use the sidewalk with them, that's why I suggested that.

But looking better I see now it's just a hole in the fence, I was under the impression that was an actual gate, in this case it indeed shouldn't be used at all.

That fence would indicate it is not a public road.

See that tree to the left? Not the one behind the pickup, I mean the one on the far left of the pic just barely showing. That one. Get yourself some paper, a marker, and some duct tape. Write something appropriate in big letters on the paper like "this is how douchebags park" with an arrow pointing right. Use duct tape to attach said sign to said tree. Then see how long it takes them to get a clue. Even if they don't, it's good for some shits & giggles.

The new apartment complex owns that dilapidated old fence? Then who nailed all the plywood to it?

Looks like there’s been some mild frustration on the other side of the fence too.

I think your best bet is to respectfully walk your bike through before the gap mysteriously closes up. Better yet find another gap in the fence. Or take the busy road. Owners likely had a nice quiet place and had to watch mature trees cleared and the apartments go up next door. I’d guess besides cyclists there are dog walkers and others and they’re increasingly unhappy about it. And, if it is a public street, those may be other neighbors’ cars banding together. A shame, probably could be handled way better by everyone involved. Apartment management should help make improvements.

You're on a bike and as a dutchy I dont see any obstacles here. Seems like there is plenty of room on the curb to go around the cars unless I'm seeing something wrong.

Hope he has a friendly paint shop on speed dial.

1

u/wastemetime 1d ago

Have you tried to talk with the person?

1

u/djl32 1d ago

The cars are parked illegally. Call code enforcement every single time.

1

u/caedusith 1d ago

Holy shit just go left around the truck and though the fence gap. It's literally that easy.

u/TerpyAndroid29 1d ago

Is the shortcut on private property loo

1

u/UnitedChain4566 1d ago

Their apartment property, actually.

0

u/EvilTodd1970 1d ago

Yeah, the cars. Not the fence behind them.

0

u/FoxGaming 1d ago

The center fence segment is offset by like 3 ft, making a nice little bike sized gap. It’s not a solid fence.

4

u/Designer_District_18 1d ago

So it sounds like it's not public access and you'll just have to find a new path

2

u/UnitedChain4566 1d ago

OP has explained that the fence is owned by their apartment building.

u/TheRustyAxolotl 1d ago

He looks like he's TRYING to block you.

-6

u/RussianCat26 1d ago

Is it possible you're also slightly jealous that he has three cars and you ride on a bike? Failing to see the issue here

1

u/UnitedChain4566 1d ago

It's obnoxious to do that regardless.

-5

u/RussianCat26 1d ago

Ah so you also don't have three vehicles 🤔

2

u/FoxGaming 1d ago

My household has two cars between the two of us. I choose to bike for health reasons and to save money. I don’t envy cars because I don’t think very highly of them in general.

My household has two cars between the two of us

I choose to bike for health reasons and to save money

two of the most contradictory statements I've seen in a while. Odd for somebody who doesn't think highly of cars to still own two of them

0

u/FoxGaming 1d ago

It’s contradictory if you’ve spent your entire life chewing on lead paint chips.

Not everywhere in my life is within walking or biking distance. And while I prefer to bike or walk where I can, there are places I ultimately have to go that public transit won’t accommodate. I own a car because it’s an unfortunate necessity. Not because I enjoy owning one.

-1

u/Peter_Lemonjell0 1d ago

Just simply go around the truck to access the path.

The soy in this one is strong. Maybe eat a steak for lunch!

Call bylaw, I think there’s something about un licensed cars allowed for one property.
