Isn't the word panini already plural in Italian?

71

u/Its0nlyRocketScience 21h ago

Apparently yes. But according to my 5 whole seconds of googling, the singular panino means bread roll, not pressed sandwich, so idk if you could go to Italy, ask for a panino, and get what we typically call a panini in English.

26

u/Illustrious_Land699 20h ago

Some words like Gelato, Panino, Latte, Prosciutto etc are actually the words ice cream, sandwich, milk, ham etc in Italian. In English they have taken the Italian words and transformed them into specific terms but if you go to Italy they are simply the translations. So what you call a pressed sandwich in Italy would still be called a Panino... Panini if plural.

u/B_A_Beder 18h ago

This type of confusion could be avoided by using the foreign word as an adjective for the English word, like chai tea

15

u/turtleship_2006 15h ago

Man I sure love me some Tea Tea

3

u/Lumb3rCrack 18h ago

More like companies like starbucks who decided to do thisšŸ˜‚

1

u/Its0nlyRocketScience 18h ago

So asking for a bread roll will get you a sandwich? What if I want just an actual bread roll?

4

u/Admiral_Ballsack 14h ago

I have but a vague idea of what a bread roll is, but in Italy there are hundreds of different kinds of bread so it's not a given that whatever place you happen into will have the specific shape you call bread roll in America.

Either way, you usually point at whatever kind of bread you prefer and they make you a panino with it.

4

u/Admiral_Ballsack 14h ago

Nope, any kind of bread with stuff in it is a panino (I'm Italian).

2

u/Alessioproietti 14h ago

the singular panino means bread roll, not pressed sandwich,

Panino means both bread roll and stuffed bread roll.

Pressed sandwich is called toast, panino is way similar to a sub.

4

u/DiamondCreeper123 18h ago

Yeah, English has the tendency to just add -s to already plural non-English words. Itā€™s the same with Pierogi. Itā€™s already plural (singular pierĆ³g), but we just add -s to it for some reason.

2

u/okiedokieophie 10h ago

Yeah, singular is panenis

1

u/hewrites 20h ago

Yes. Panino is singular

341

u/Relievedtobefree 22h ago

Most people don't know how to use apostrophes properly.

95

u/DudeFoods 22h ago

It's so weird to me that they think the plural of panini needs one, but then don't do it with the plural of sub but I agree. There are so many people who think that anything with an S on the end needs an apostrophe.

102

u/ReadingRambo152 21h ago

Technically panini is the plural version of panino so it doesnā€™t need the s either lol

15

u/Ok_Nothing_9733 19h ago

Mmm that was a delicious raviolo

9

u/distorsore 17h ago

Yes Raviolo Is the singular for ravioli

7

u/ivanparas 17h ago

Slurp up that spaghetto

2

u/Fawstar 11h ago

Spaghetto, bet you can't eat just one.

2

u/Slight-Garlic534 8h ago

Chef Boyardee in the house!

1

u/ivanparas 2h ago

Slurp up that spaghetto

Chef Boyardeez Nuts

8

u/ratbum 18h ago

The slices with pepperono are the best

6

u/Ok_Nothing_9733 17h ago

Do you mean a pepperono?

2

u/distorsore 17h ago

Pepperoni isn't an Italian word. Peperoni Is the italian word for peppers so Peperone Is the singular for peperoni

3

u/andmewithoutmytowel 20h ago

lol, was about to say that too.

21

u/Dry_Presentation_197 21h ago

Somewhat related:

My phone tries to auto correct "well" to "we'll" every fucking time I type it. It's infuriating.

14

u/na3than 18h ago

We'll at least were not alone

3

u/A_Concerned_Mando 17h ago

Thatā€™s funny, mine does the exact opposite. Iā€™m always trying to type ā€œweā€™llā€ and it will never allow it, and will always change it to well, even after going back and manually changing it, after pressing space it changes it back to well. Wow, Literally just happened to me three times trying to type this, so frustrating.

1

u/Dry_Presentation_197 3h ago

Well well well, what have we here? Will the whale well wail?

9

u/Glittering_Cow945 19h ago

Panini IS already a plural. One is called a panino, "little bread" So both the s and the apostrophe are wrong.

1

u/Intelligent_Grade372 17h ago

Wait until they find out what a macchiato really is..

6

u/mmwhatchasaiyan 21h ago

Might be the auto correct on their phone. Mine always seems to incorrectly add apostrophes to words I add an ā€œsā€ at the end of lol

2

u/Frolicking-Fox 20h ago

This is what i think also.

2

u/Stainless_Heart 18h ago

Autocorrect is a learning function. It does it because it was taught that way by the user, and can be easily un-taught by correcting the autocorrect on the screen.

Which means there is still no excuse, and there are people that do not care how crappy their presentation to the world appears. It's a similar issue with people who video horizontal things in portrait mode and who screenshot and re-post with black borders instead of taking a few seconds to crop them out.

But at the very least, these things serve as a good indicator of what to expect from people. As the expression goes, "how you do one thing is how you do everything."

1

u/badgersruse 2h ago

Autocorrect is a learning function. Ha ha. It is a make shit up function on ios at least.

6

u/Relievedtobefree 22h ago

Makes absolutely no sense!

17

u/Grimlocks_Ballsack 21h ago

Makeā€™s*

2

u/TimHonks24 21h ago

Grimlock's_Ballsack*

2

u/Ordinary-Violinist-9 18h ago

Panini is plural already. It's like saying cars's

1

u/AngelicXia 15h ago

That's called the "Greengrocer's Apostrophe".

0

u/Sbatio 21h ago edited 21h ago

What if they think itā€™s a possessive title?

Like Samā€™s Hotdog, or Reeceā€™s Pieces, or Mama Lionettesā€™s Little Italian bakery.

Some person named Panini invented this way to cook sandwiches on both sides!!!

2

u/Necessary_Ad2114 11h ago

Thereā€™s a restaurant on I-95 in Florida called Tacoā€™s Queen. Like, itā€™s the queen that belongs to (or is sworn to) by one single taco.Ā

0

u/mrrichiet 19h ago

It's is very confusing

7

u/i-hate-jurdn 19h ago

54% of people in the states are below a 6th grade reading level.

I imagine MOST people don't know how to use it.

4

u/turtleship_2006 15h ago

I imagine MOST people don't know how to use it.

Most people in the states, if you want to use reading level stats that are from the US

1

u/i-hate-jurdn 15h ago

Hate to break it to you, but even though some countries have great education and an educated population, much of the world does not.

I don't know for certain, but "most" still may apply.

4

u/NthDegreeThoughts 19h ago

A pizza place lists a ā€œmensā€ bathroom. Double plural. Love it.

3

u/Archipotrio 21h ago

apostrophe's

2

u/Under_Ach1ever 21h ago

How are apostrophe's suppose'd to be use'd in sentence's?

1

u/WizardSleeves31 20h ago

Most people don't know that the crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe

1

u/SebVettelstappen 20h ago

I really dont get whatā€™s ā€˜so hard underā€™sā€™tand about apoā€™stropheā€™s.

1

u/ProfessorSome9139 19h ago

Who the fuckā€™s are you talking abouā€™t?

1

u/powdered_dognut 19h ago

Ducking autocorrect doesn't know how to use them either. I get tired of removing them so I let them fly. If it confuses people, upsets them, or they don't understand the word because of an apostrophe, I'm ducking sorry.

1

u/Zur__En__Arrh 17h ago

Apoā€™stropheā€™s*

1

u/Ok_Season5846 16h ago

*Mosā€™t

1

u/turtleship_2006 15h ago

You missed a golden joke opportunity

You were literally one character away

1

u/Effective_Egg_3066 21h ago

Not to be that guy, but it's actually "apostrophe's"

Really goes to show how hard it is to understand the rules around that word

9

u/yellowsubmarinr 21h ago

I canā€™t tell if this is a troll but you are not correct lolĀ

6

u/Distuted 21h ago

Says the guy using the apostrophe wrong, it's cant

Really goes to show how hard it is to understand the rules around that word

2

u/yellowsubmarinr 21h ago

Damnit. I got boomed.Ā

2

u/phallusaluve 18h ago

*its and *rule's

0

u/Graveyking 16h ago

Some of us are just dyslexic, which is a word I had to google how to spell.

68

u/eaunoway 22h ago

Straight to jail.

19

u/PhilosophySignal3634 21h ago

Well yea.Ā  It's short for panini's monster.Ā  Panini was the doctor.

1

u/aannoonnyymmoouuss99 7h ago

Underrated comment right here

19

u/mangosaresweet 21h ago

Thereā€™s a restaurant near me that spells ā€œtoastā€ wrong on their menu at least five times.

9

u/DudeFoods 21h ago

I love that they misspell it two different ways too

13

u/bodhidharma132001 22h ago

Panini ass

4

u/TeuthidTheSquid BLUE 21h ago

Peninis

21

u/beardedgamerdad 22h ago

They are asking if you want Panini's sandwich. They took it from Panini. I bet he's miffed about losing out on lunch.

7

u/FlorianTheLynx 21h ago

Iā€™m sufficiently anally retentive that I will sometimes avoid places like this. My justification is that if they canā€™t even bother to spell their own products correctly, what other corners are they cutting?

7

u/adie_mitchell 21h ago

Panini is already the plural. Panino is the singular. So that's doubly infuriating!

20

u/germinal_velocity 22h ago

I love this. There's an entire book on a related topic. V. entertaining.

1

u/weedtrek 17h ago

When it comes to eggs, "fresh" is the questionable adjective. Fresh eggs can be weeks old. It doesn't make a huge difference, I honestly don't know if eggs that are still warm from the chicken actually taste better but having had them, you definitely think they do.

2

u/germinal_velocity 17h ago

Your comment would be perfect if the quotes were around the word fresh. The humor comes from them being placed around a totally inappropriate word. I had this book and it actually made me laugh out loud.

4

u/Iam_McLovin420 21h ago

Thatā€™s not even a panini itā€™s just a grilled white bread sandwich.

2

u/003402inco 16h ago

Any bread with stuff in it mashed in a press =panini on most menus in the US. Got to have those tale tale griddle makes.

6

u/Ballard_Viking66 22h ago

I would never go there just because of that. Yes I can be petty

3

u/DudeFoods 22h ago

I almost wanna correct them about it, but I don't wanna seem rude.

2

u/ohdearitsrichardiii 20h ago

Don't do it, some people become agressive if you tell them they made a mistake

3

u/AlwaysTheTeddy 21h ago

You are all mistaken. They do it because the guy that makes em is called panini mic drop

3

u/Techiedad91 21h ago

But who is Panini?

3

u/jungjinyoung 21h ago

perfect post for this sub, 10/10 mildly infuriating

3

u/TeachBS 15h ago

Donā€™t get me started. Former English teacher here. Biggest annoyance for me is people who use ā€œI ā€œ as an object pronoun instead of a subject.

Simply separate into two sentences to see if it fits the sentence.

(She and I went to the store) She went to the store. I went to the store

I(It is for my brother and ME.) It is for my brother. It is for ME (NOT I) I am so tired of people thinking they sound so smart or proper. Someone actually tried to correct me and said ā€œI thought you taught English.ā€ Unbelievable. I never correct people I am talking to, but since she brought it upā€¦she was embarrassed a few minutes later.

Forming possessives is a whole other can of worms.

3

u/NkhukuWaMadzi 13h ago

It is infuriating when they didn't add it to the subs, too (sub's).

3

u/fortissimohawk 10h ago

HEY THANK'S !

4

u/0hYou 21h ago

"Panini" is already plural. One sandwich is actually a panino.

2

u/Carthax12 21h ago

My last name ends with an S.

It's ridiculous how often we get mail addressed either to The _____s's or The _____'s.

2

u/G_Art33 21h ago

The panini is possessive, duh. šŸ™„ /s

2

u/yellowsubmarinr 21h ago

People just donā€™t know how to use the apostrophe. Itā€™s all over reddit, too, and it is definitely mildly infuriatingĀ

2

u/Santos_L_Halper_II 20h ago

The solution here is to grammar shame them until they give the keys of the social media accounts over to someone who can read.

2

u/Norgaard93 19h ago

As an italian, hearing "panini" referred to a single sandwich already low key triggers me. It's one sandwich guys, that makes it a "panino"

2

u/Emotional-Site9017 18h ago

My aunt will text my sister and I and say ā€œhey favorite nieceā€™sā€šŸ„²i dont have the heart to correct her

2

u/Silly_Stable_ 18h ago

Panini is already a plural word. You donā€™t need the ā€œsā€ at all. Itā€™s Italian.

2

u/3godeth 14h ago

Itā€™s so people donā€™t ask for a paneenis

2

u/mgkqpz 13h ago

Is somebodyā€™s panini

2

u/ilprofs07205 21h ago

Shouldn't even be an s there, panini is already plural

1

u/grantnel2002 22h ago

I need more examples.

This is the About Us section of their Facebook page

1

u/ImplodingBillionaire 22h ago

I have a feeling that they think ā€œpaninisā€ looks/ends like ā€œpenisā€ like someone could read it ā€œpuh-NEE-nissā€ or something but idk

1

u/GasStationDickPill85 21h ago

Even their auto correct is wrong lol

1

u/Normal-Tadpole-4833 21h ago

whats the answer?

1

u/partisancord69 21h ago

Could be autocorrect? I had that issue with a different word earlier today. Not sure why it would autocorrect to that but it could be the case.

1

u/zorp0 21h ago

Itā€™s happening everywhere. Canā€™t say shit because then youā€™re a grammar elitist. Iā€™m not, but itā€™s icky.

1

u/Fit-Direction2371 21h ago

Do you want panini's or 'sub

1

u/classicnikk 21h ago

Subs all the way but I do love a good panini

1

u/LittleLightsintheSky 21h ago

Finally something that is actually mildly infuriating

1

u/GenericUsername817 21h ago

The guy that makes the Paninis is named Panini, these are Panini's Paninis

1

u/Internal-Ad7481 20h ago

That's crazy. Everybody knows the plural for panini is panini.

1

u/Thyandar 20h ago

Something I always do is to try convince new friends and acquaintances that panini is plural and paninus is singular. It's believable superficially because latin pluralization but also funny because sometimes they'll say Paninus straight faced in conversation.

1

u/Luigi_Anarchist 20h ago

Subs for lunch, panini for dinner.

1

u/Then_Use_5496 19h ago

Where's Panini's?

1

u/SideEmbarrassed1611 19h ago

I am glad they just wrote panini

1

u/ztruk 19h ago

shit like this makes me never go to a restaurant

1

u/SaltedPineapple 19h ago

Off with their heads

1

u/ShinyTamao 19h ago

Is it not just any words that end with a vowel?

1

u/Dry-Top-3495 18h ago

Really? Seriously who gives a damn about apostropheā€™s

1

u/Flaky-Gazelle 18h ago

Itā€™s semi-colons for me šŸ˜, I just sort of sprinkle them in there like itā€™s paprika or something lmao

1

u/FastCombination3525 18h ago

Panini IS THE DAMN PLAURAL VERSION

RED FLAG SANDWICH SHOP

1

u/discretethrowaway_ 18h ago

Exactly what this sub was made for

1

u/AsleepGarbage5306 18h ago

Maybe it's a person NAMED panini they're talking about! You never know!!

1

u/SketchyLineman 18h ago

Itā€™s auto correct.

1

u/One_Patience5631 17h ago

That sub looks dry

1

u/ChessMasterOfe 16h ago

I thought panini was an Italian name when i saw this.

1

u/Hour_Ad5398 16h ago

how are humans supposed bite the thing on right side?

1

u/Demon_of_Order 16h ago

so, is it possible they're not English natives? In Dutch by example that would be the correct way of writing about multiple panini. It'd make sense to make this mistake

1

u/Hamshaggy70 16h ago

Can't it be Pannini's and Subs?

1

u/infoagerevolutionist 16h ago

The word "panini" works it doesn't need the "s" there at all. The "i" at the end of words in Italian is what "s" does in English: pluralizes.

1

u/FryCakes 16h ago

Panini is or subs

1

u/BeeVlam 16h ago

In other languages it's often with apostrophe. Like in dutch we write panini's

1

u/JigWM 16h ago

In Europe you'll sometimes see English plurals with apostrophes because a vowel+s at the end of a word will be pronounced differently under the rules of their language.

Obviously, I'm not saying that's what is happening here, although it would be extra funny if it were in Italy and they were treating panini/paninis as an English word.

1

u/Jaambie 15h ago

Paneenis

1

u/Joejoe988 15h ago

The plural for panini isnā€™t Paniniā€™s. Itā€™s Paninises

1

u/RiderforHire 14h ago

Panini is or subs

1

u/SomethingAbtU 14h ago

Native English speakers are quick to mock people who speak English as a second language, but it's very common for native English speakers to:

-Mix up there, their, and they're
-Use the wrong too, to, or two
-Put commas in the wrong place or don't use them at all
-Use apostrophes for plurals or putting one in a possessive pronoun (its)

1

u/squidr1n 14h ago

What is an "or sub" and why is the panini in possession of it???

1

u/Diela1968 13h ago

A) I would reply to their posts that you do NOT use an apostrophe when pluralizing a word. More people need to know this because it drives me crazy.

B) Also add to the reply that panini is already plural.

1

u/LongEyedSneakerhead 13h ago

It's the panini's sub, the panini owns it.

1

u/Gloomy_Zebra_ 12h ago

Keep correcting them. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

1

u/Mercuryshottoo 11h ago

Probably got too many panenis jokes

1

u/TheSmurfGod 10h ago

They are clearly talking about the Paniniā€™s panini /s

1

u/RepresentativeOk2433 9h ago

Probably autocorrect. My phone does that to me too sometimes.

1

u/limejuicethrowaway 7h ago

A brewery near me is constantly referencing Togo beer instead of to-go. I don't think they mean to say the beer is made in a small West African country.

0

u/aim4theface 11h ago

If something so minute so small so who fives an f! Bothers you? You might want to seek a life!

0

u/Jack-Innoff 9h ago

If they're as good as they look, I think I'd give them a pass on grammar.

-3

u/Le_Zouave 20h ago

You want to know?

Panini's and paninis are both correct outside of Italy.

3

u/phallusaluve 18h ago

Panini's is never correct unless you're talking about something that belongs to Panini

2

u/003402inco 16h ago

Paniniā€™s panini, if you will.
