My Kia Soul came with a flat bottomed steering wheel like that, and as a tall person with proportionally longer legs it actually makes getting in and out of the car sooo much easier. But it still had the top of the wheel, because not having it would be asinine.

And physical buttons to operate some basic functions (headlights, windshield wipers) without having to navigate through menus on touchscreens. I couldn't imagine driving into heavy rain and having to take my eyes off of the road so I could turn on the wipers.

Honest question here, why did you buy an EV if you only drive 5k miles a year? Seems like you wouldn’t buy enough gas to make a dent in the cost.

I didn’t buy it, it’s a friend’s! Trust me, I am also baffled by spending $100k+ on a car and only drive it 5k a year. But hey, to each their own

Have you not read any articles about Tesla from the last 10 years? Their quality control has always been shit.
I’m certain they only sell online because no one would walk up to one on a lot and be like “yep! That one with the trim falling off is the new one I want!”.

They don’t only sell online. I’ve driven past a few Tesla dealerships. People will just buy anything expensive because they believe the misconception that more expensive = higher quality

And the more expensive the car you drive makes the person who drives it more impressive. IMHO that's totally ass backwards LOL.

Cybertruck owners' steering wheels are flawless.
15
u/PickledPeoples 17h ago
Give it time. If it's the same material as any of thier other models, I guarantee it will have the same issue. But if they finally decided to upgrade the material for the cubertruck I think they should have focused the quality control elsewhere given its had at least 8 recalls in the first year it was out. The latest recalls fix leaving cybertruck owners with ugly panel gaps and discoloration from welding.
Edit: Are you making a joke about how they never get to drive them because they're always in the shop or on the back of the tow truck? If so I deserve a woosh.
48
u/APigInANixonMask 16h ago
It was a joke about Cybertruck drivers not having to worry about rings wearing away the material because they're all divorced.

Off topic, but: How is that non-wheel (non-circular) steering "wheel" safe? If it's too low (close to your legs), then when you turn it, the "corners" can hit your legs and interfere with turning the wheel, and therefore with steering.
Aren't regular steering wheels circular so they can't get caught like that?

u/Dazzling_Error5272 19h ago
You bought this in 2022 after nearly 8 years of evidence from the industry and testimony from owners that Teslas are built with sub par materials. From panel gaps, missing bolts, parts zip tied down, glue used in the place of bolts, no glue used in places it was required, cheap tacky plastic, rattling interior panels, rattling everything actually, the cheapest of the cheap faux leather throughout and that’s not even scratching the surface. You can literally watch videos of mechanics picking these up and making a list of everything they find wrong or broken that shipped like that from the factory, that sort of content doesn’t exist in the same way for mainstream manufacturers because their QC isn’t nearly as poor as Tesla’s.
I’m not from the US, this isn’t coming from a recent culture war take I just like cars, Tesla have never produced a truly premium car.

The mileage has nothing to do with the steering wheel. I can have a car with 0 miles on it, but if I constantly go into it with oily or greasy hands and grab and rub my hands on the steering wheel, then it's going to rub away on the steering wheel.
Learn to treat your stuff better. You're not a racecar driver.

This is a steering wheel manufacturing technique that is common on entry-level to standard-grade cars. They spray an outer coating (similar to paint) on the inside of a mold, then injection-mold it around the metal frame using foam. The result is a foam-encased metal frame with a black quasi-leather-look surface to it.
Not something you'd expect on a premium car (where they typically wrap the outside with leather or vinyl). But even the cheapest cars tend to have coatings that last longer than this...
2
u/Professional-Fun-431 14h ago
Just cause you spent a bunch of dough doesn't mean you bought premium. You bought a brand identity. Teslas are landfill waiting to happen

I worked on a quality campaign for one of Tesla's suppliers and was let go for my teams rejecting too many parts.
The cars are hot garbage. My 1989 Chrysler New Yorker Fifth Avenue has a build quality that could best be described as approximate-- still better than a Tesla.
Question: Is that yoke urethane?! Like, they don't cover it in leather like in a nice Kia lol
2
u/One8Bravo 10h ago

I hate to tell you guys this. Tesla build quality is probably the worst out of any of the major brands. The interiors are literal pieces of plastic being held together with even flimsier plastic clips. Can’t imagine the materials they’re using on the steering wheels are any different in quality. Literally slightly wiggle any panel in a Tesla and tell me it’s quality and I’ll laugh in your face. Can’t imagine actually getting in a crash in one of those things. Probably about as safe as a Ford Pinto. Thanks Elon.

The infuriating thing is that you bought a Tesla and are complaining about the build quality like you shouldn't have seen that coming from miles away

....this is the dumbest steering wheel design I've ever seen for a car. This is a flight yolk. You're missing half the surface used for turning it and you have no 10/2 to grip. This would work in a flying car, but it's not a flying car...
