Exactly one year ago, I lost my job. Today, I discovered I’m still the alarm company’s emergency contact for my old store.
Boss literally fired his entire workforce last year out of the blue. I won’t get into the details because I will go on a tirade. Been unemployed since. So this was a wonderful reminder.
When I tried to text him to take me off the alarm list, I discovered he has me blocked LOL

I wouldn’t have even tried contacting him. I would’ve just blocked the number.

Honestly, I don’t know why I even try to be a decent person anymore. If i get another call, that’s what I’m doing

Don't block the number because they will move to the next contact on the list.
As long as they think you're receiving the messages just fine, they've done their job and boss is fucked.

What you do is save the number as a contact, and then give it silence as a ring tone.

Make sure you press one so they know you’re listening. Not doing anything but listening.

Haha. When that happened to me I told them to send police for every call so they would be charged until they realized why and removed me.

hmmm, a lesser man would exploit this and help himself to some retribution or severance level sundries & refreshments.

u/typewrytten 17h ago
I moved 1000 miles away. I’m not even in the same time zone anymore lol
15
u/Peter_Lemonjell0 16h ago
I was not even suggesting you were a lesser man, but yeah 1000miles away wouldn't make it very easy if you were a morally flexible individual.

u/typewrytten 16h ago
Oh believe me, I had my moral low road with this one. I still had access to the company cloud drive for a second and deleted every single thing I had a hand in creating, including sales commission calculators. All of them could be replicated, but I had been the best at Excel.
I never signed an intellectual property agreement, so i’m taking my stuff with me ¯_(ツ)_/¯

They can still go after you if you made all that stuff on company time. If they're paying you to do it, it's their IP, not yours. Let's hope they're too incompetent to find out what you did.

Boss fired his entire workforce in one sweep. I'm thinking "competency" is not high on his list of "Best Traits".

u/typewrytten 11h ago
Considering they used it every day, i’m sure they realized immediately. I also do not care. It’s been a year. If they wanted to do something, they would have. If they had tried to do something, I had copies to give them.

but would give op one helluva alibi were they to collude with someone closer to aforementioned facility

Sue them for stand by pay.

HA! I hope you didn't respond. If your former employer was stupid enough to not remember to advise the alarm company about an change in emergency contact, that's on them.

u/typewrytten 16h ago
Hell no. I tried to tell him to take me off the list, discovered he blocked me, and texted the group chat I’m in with everyone else he fired in that same sweep lmfao
He can deal with whatever tripped the alarm himself.

Oh, I can definitely relate!! I left my retail management job in August of 2020 because I was working alone for weeks on end. I decided to retire early, gave my notice and left peacefully. THREE YEARS LATER, I am contacted by the security company because an alarm was activated! (I live 55 miles away). Not 20 minutes later, city police called about same issue. I called corporate and let them know to 1. Contact whoever is the current manager. 2. Change all emergency contact info ASAP and 3. Have they even had security back to rest/reprogram since I left? Because I was able to give the 5 digit code that existed back when I worked and it was still active!!
I left on good terms but this lack of attention on their part means that anyone else that left could also bypass the security and gain access. NOT COOL.

You're under no obligation to work for him. Delete the msg and move on with your life. His inventory, his problem.

u/typewrytten 16h ago
I couldn’t even do anything if I wanted to, I moved halfway across the country lol if something happens, that’s on him for not keeping his shit up to date tbh

I can’t believe how careless some companies/ their management are. Had something similar happening to me, but over 6 years after I left. Imagine my panic and surprise when I got a phone call at 5 AM from an unknown number just for the person telling me, that the Alarm at one of the stores went off 🙄 sure, how about you call someone who cares? I have not been employed there since ages.

I lived very close to my store it took 1 year and several threats of legal action to get off list
It was extremely over sensitive

We just upgraded our alarm system at work. My wife (now) also worked there for an airline. They were given access codes to the Terminal. She hasn't worked there for 19 years. Her code was still in the list and active.

The op worked at a store 1 year ago.
Today, 1year after they quit their job at this store, the alarm for the store started to ring. The op received the voicemail shown in the image above.
Op is mildly infuriated because they should not be getting these calls anymore since it has been quite some time since they stopped working for this store.

u/typewrytten 16h ago
I didn’t even quit, that’s the most infuriating part. My boss fired literally every employee and brought on an entirely new team

This fucker's getting unwanted calls about his shitty ex-boss about to get robbed ;-)

I asked chatGPT to ELI5
A long time ago, the person worked at a store that has a loud alarm to keep it safe. They don’t work there anymore — they stopped working there a whole year ago! 😮
But today, the alarm at the store went BEEP BEEP BEEP! 🚨
And guess what? The store called them about the alarm, even though they don’t work there now! Why? Because the old boss never changed the contact list — so the store still thinks this person should be called if there’s an emergency.
That’s it! Pretty silly, right? 😄

Guess his alarm is about to run out of power then.
