No joke, I used to eat match heads as a child. They tasted kinda good.

cue the maniacal laughter as he lights his hair on fire with his final match and he blows up the whole main street leaving nothing but chaos, destruction and death.

If you eat match heads and then eat the strike pad, then run belly-first into a wall you will explode.

That slight crunchiness/grittiness and interesting taste that melts into the mouth... Nope, not familiar with it at all

Honestly, I'd have to eat a match head to tell you. From what I can remember from over 30 years ago, there was almost a metallic salty flavor? It was something along those lines it was a brief burst of flavor if you can call it flavor before tasting nothing. Unless of course they've changed the match mixture since the 90s but I doubt that.

My dad apparently did, when he was a toddler. I think it was some kind of chemical deficiency?

You sent me down a rabbit hole. There is an eating disorder(I think it might be controversial if it’s actually an eating disorder) called Pica that makes people crave non food objects. The cause is unknown but possibly linked to iron deficiency. Affected people have been known to eat match heads, dirt, and burnt matches. It’s a common trope in medical shows
