The longer I watched it, the more anxious I got that it would end before it was complete. Very satisfied, 10/10 would watch again. In fact I will watch it again right now, without the anxiety :)

Yeah I was like that too thinking the video was going to finish before the end 😅

Okay but what is that thing and how's it doing that?

well it's a cutter removing very tiny amounts of material ( measured in 1-10/1000 inches, idk how it works it metric)
the point is to restore the surface to be flat and make a good seal, this is the cylinder head (you can see valves on it) and the area being cut forms the seal around the cylinder combustion

Blades rotating and slicing fractions of a millimeter off the surface to remove the worn paint and provide an even surface for a new powder coat to be applied

🤦🏼♂️ No. It's a cylinder head. For an engine. This isn't for paint. It's so the head sits flush against the gasket/block so that it's got a strong airtight/watertight seal.

Silly question, but did they not paint the entire surface yellow (ie the middle) because only the outside edge needs to be flat for the gasket seal? So the middle/inside can be warped or not resurfaced because it doesn’t matter? Thanks in advance

I’m so annoyed by that overspray

That's what makes it so satisfying though. Usually engine builders use dykem blue paint on the surface being milled so that they can better visualize the low spots and adjust the cutter accordingly.

If it were just on the surface I’d agree but it’s down in all the which aren’t taped off.

dykem
I've only ever heard that said, not seen it written. Always thought it was 'Die Cam'

Bet it took awhile to tram that flat. Shimming and all. Looks to be only taking 2 to 3 grand off and not that warped afterall. I was wondering what the back stroke was taking off. Definitely have to have your head straight as hell to get a flat cut. Done stuff like this before, fly-cutting kinda takes a skill like none other.
