In the comics, he's sometimes depicted as incredibly smart, sometimes because of his Kryptonian biology, and sometimes just because he can read and think really quickly because of his super-speed. (One of the most popular Superman stories of the last 25 years, All-Star Superman, leans into his super-intelligence pretty heavily.)
I could definitely be wrong about this, but I think the robots are often depicted as being a Kryptonian thing—part of the stuff his parents sent to Earth with him. He does do the maintenance on them, though.
It's one of those things that kinda gets overlooked because of personality and because of proximity, but Superman is very smart.
He is an award winning journalist as his "fake" job. He can read and retain info at light ing fast speed. He has access to basically every peice of info on earth.
But he is still kinda a dope. And not in a bad way, but he is a simple guy at his heart and often goes for simpler solutions. Then add in that he isn't super creative. He isn't really an artist in any sense. He doesn't really have a flare for that stuff.
Then you constantly put him next to the smartest people in the world, so he looks dumber by comparison.
But he is very smart and capable of great mental feats. It just isn't where he shines.
