aaaaand there goes the American farmer exports...

I wonder how that will affect the subsidies farmers get for growing crops that they end up exporting.

I'm not an economist, but a 10% retaliation on soybean tariffs in his first term prompted a $20B bailout subsidy for farmers. This most recent retaliation would require something... much more.

The price of soybeans dropped roughly 40 percent since 2022, partly because Trump’s first (much more limited than today's) trade war reshaped the global market, and Brazil and Argentina became sources in direct competition to the U.S. We won't be exporting as much because of that, too.

Farmer bailout will be required or many will go under. We live in the dumbest of timelines.

As someone who doesn't want to starve, I'm pro farmer bailouts. As someone who hates Trump, I kind of want to see us all starve because no one can afford food and the economy goes to shit. Of course I know that even if Trump were overthrown from that, there's no easy fix. It's not like tariffs can just be lowered after the fact to go back to how it used to be. You've got to convince those other nations to buy from you.

What do you think the chances are thousands of Americans literally starve to death as a result of these recent policies, and how long after family members start starving to death do you think rebellion will start being openly talked about in the streets

Majority of export from farmers to China isn’t food I think, it’s cotton and other shit. It was actually a big problem water wise for California.

Who would have expected Repbulicans will be the ones that have to bring back government cheese and peanut butter to feed people?

TBH most other countries will be importing from other countries than the US. Just cause you have a basket of bread doesn’t mean people want your dry, stupid cookies.

Retaliation or not. Doesn’t china NEED to buy our agricultural stuff?

Edit: sorry guys I really didn’t know. Fuck Trump.

They have to buy agricultural stuff, they don’t have to buy OUR agricultural stuff.

The environment is not as they keep clearing the Amazon to grow more crops.

The US is 7% of their imports and now their stuff costs 34% more for no increase in quality. They'll buy from their other trade partners.

Other countries exist. One of the biggest advantages the US has is thanks to how much food it produces, it’s able to sell cheaper than most. This comes at a bit of a cost, US food tends to be a bit less quality, but the cheapness makes it a worthwhile trade.

Now it’s no longer cheap. Other countries also produce food, and without having computing that’s cheaper, they are going to look much more appetizing to fill that gap.

Thanks for the response. That makes a lot of sense

Hell no. No one needs Americas shit. Americans can fuck themselves hereafter.

No, they got enough land mass to do it in their own country and since they allow sweatshops they don't have to worry about the stuff we do to make manual work tolerable.

u/Nwrecked 1d ago

Hmm I’m reading about it now. China has been reducing its reliance on American agriculture for a while now. God Trump is a dickhead.

Look up the soy bean incident where we lost revenue due to an increase in pricing to China that Trump had to send out help to farmers to circumvent the fuck up he made.

That's not to factor in the amount of people who lost their lives and jobs thanks to covid and trump's handling of the situation.
