Nostalgia What have they done to Barney..
I noticed this display at Walmart today, I had no idea they had rebooted the show, I’m not sure how to feel about a CGI Barney and Friends

Crazy Frog, that weird CGI frog from circa 2003 that came with an annoying song.

Fucking Jurassic Park lineage Barney.

u/zombies-and-coffee 1d ago
Come on, man, that's an insult to Jurassic Park. This... thing... is way worse than just prehistorically inaccurate dinosaurs and a movie that doesn't match well enough with the plot of the book.

Why does everything have to have giant eyes? They did this to My Little Pony, too.

u/SplatDragon00 1d ago
Giant eyes come across as childish and friendly
Unfortunately

It's also associated with cuteness. See: anime

I think it's also for toy manufacturing. The new Barney design looks way easier to mold into toys.

As a parent of young kids, it is so hard to find dolls/female figurine characters that don't have huge eyes/lashes and coloured eyeliner. Bleh.
12
u/RoseyDove323 1d ago
Winnie the pooh and friends still have the small eyes. But I'm sure if they had been invented now, they wouldn't.
3
u/Snackolotl 1d ago
Basic animation principle, big eyes were expressive and easy to work with. It also probably helps them to teach kids more nonverbal communication cues.

I saw this a couple days ago lol. Honestly it made me pretty happy to see that name again. I immediately started reciting the song to my heavily embarrassed son.

My late father took a stuffed Barney, fashioned a noose for it and left it sitting on the dashboard for the whole world to see. He had a special hate for it.

Was just talking about Barney last night. My granddaughter, 1yr old, is obsessed with Bluey. That's all we watch, that's all that's on the TV when they're here. My daughter was complaining of being tired of watching all day every day.... she's got no idea, lol. She loved Barney for about 3-4yrs, 2004-2007. That's all we watched all day, everyday. I love watching bluey with the granddaughter, did not enjoy 3 yrs straight of Barney

I felt the same about the Chuck E Cheese mascot. Went from a rat smoking a cigar to a more kid-friendly mouse who encouraged fun to a slimmed down mouse-like kid with ADHD.
This art style reminds me of other modern animated models for children shows. They're overly animated to move at 90 frames per second and rarely (if ever) blink... and never. ever. stop. smiling. It's been 17 years since I've actively watched television so whenever a promo featuring an old character with new design pops up, I'm awestruck.
In honesty, I'm amazed Barney is still relevant today. No one had anything positive to say about the original show in 1992. Mr. Roger's Neighborhood was way more popular and educational.

u/Snackolotl 1d ago
It's on Cartoon Network now and it's utterly terrible, I always thought the whole appeal was that he's in the fursuit and kids could realistically meet Barney with no compromise.

I’m glad they’re trying to bring him back. Barney taught my disabled son a lot. The show helped him with language, music, and many other concepts. I hope kids enjoy it and parents support it.

For today’s kids the Barney we grew up with would probably seem creepy. Nothing wrong with changing it up for the new generation. I know this is the nostalgia sub, but as adults we need to remember that this isn’t for us anymore.

CocoMelon happened.
Every reboot of an old children's show is now adopting that hideous soulless aesthetic

I hate that everything is getting overly cutesy... 😠
Why can't people let things be?
I'm not a Barney fan, it wasn't part of my childhood or teenage years, but other characters that were like Ben 10, got a complete overhaul that made them look like ass.
What a shame 🤦

He looks less repulsive than the 90s version, imo. The plushies look nice but the CG character himself looks off (the eyes).

Eh, it's kind of like the Ninja Turtles, evolving to stay relevant with the current tastes of the time. Some things are timeless, but this doesn't get under my skin.

Barney has undergone a lot of changes over the years, so I get that — but I’m not a fan of taking away the live-action aspect of the show it once was. The kids were relatable because they were real kids.
