So is this a one time use kind of thing?

Only if you lose it! You should be able to unhook it from the fish and put it back in your collection. You will have different flys that will suit different conditions as you are trying to match with what the fish is expecting to find.
Spent my childhood being dragged to trout pools, watched my mother making her own flys

Upvoted. I don't fish, I've done it and don't really enjoy it, but I have always been fascinated by flies and lures, and thought it might be a fun hobby.

There are people that enjoy tying flies that don't fish. Probably not many, but it is a hobby and art form in its own right.

I love the artistry but like… are there any fish smart enough that that is necessary?

That intricate detail is impressive! How long did it take you to make it?

Serious question because I am ignorant but is it necessary to make it so lifelike? Like can the fish actually tell if you made a shitty one and be like "nah that's a fishhook" or is it just a cool thing to make super realistic for fun
