It’s a miracle

For the last decade or so, I have slowly become more and more onion intolerant, to the point in the last few years that I have cut out any food with onion powder in it just to avoid hours in the bathroom.

I have disliked onions as a flavor for a while, but the physical symptoms didn’t set in until I was almost 30. It started as a minor inconvenience, I wouldn’t order dishes with onions in them because eating too many would hurt my stomach. Then it moved to avoiding anything with onions in it, like soups or sauces. Then it got to the point where onion powder, even small amounts, would trigger a gut reaction that would ruin my day and trap me in a bathroom.

I guess I don’t digest onions, and my stomach just produces a ton of gas that forces me to expel the vile things as quickly as possible. This has completely changed the way I can enjoy food, and I honestly dread going out to eat or having someone prepare a meal for me. I learn what I can and cannot eat from certain places, I grill waiters and chefs when we dine out in nice restaurants to make sure we avoid anything onion. This is 99% effective, but a huge pain, and I feel embarrassed every time I have to do this.

A few weeks ago I ordered an enzyme powder that you add to food. It’s called Fodzyme - this is not an ad, just an endorsement of a product in case other people suffer from this. I tried it a few days ago on a meal we cooked at home, that I added a chili crisp sauce to that had onion as the second ingredient. I sprinkled a powder pack over the food right before I ate, and besides feeling my stomach digesting the food, I had basically no discomfort.

Tonight I order spaghetti and meatballs from Noodles and Co. Onion in the meatball, onion in the marinara sauce. I haven’t been able to eat this for years. There’s basically two meals on the entire menu that are completely onion free. Well, one powder packet, and I’m sitting here on my couch 2 hours later like nothing is wrong.

I should have been on the toilet an hour ago. I can’t believe this actually works. This is seriously going to change my life and allow me to enjoy dining out like I haven’t been able to in years. What an incredible feeling. I’d be happy to answer questions if anyone wants.

As always, fuck onions. I don’t like them, I don’t want them, but believe me when I say it is damn near impossible to eat out without encountering them in some form.

I’m hopeful. I will consider running the experiment on myself. If so I will update.

Where did you buy it? It’s $70 dollars on Amazon 😱

I ordered it directly from Fodzyme. They give you 20% off your first order, but yeah it’s still pricy. I started with the 30 (?) pack of the little pouches, but after the results I’m probably going to buy a tub of the powder to keep in my kitchen.

Thanks for the info! They only had a 60 packet option on Amazon and I should be buying directly from companies websites anyway! I hope this works as well for me as it did for you!

Some companies have figured out there’s a market for allium free versions of things that normally contain onions, like spaghetti sauce. If your Fodzyme is as expensive as other enzymes, you might consider the “sensitive” recipe’s. Onion haters and onion non-tolerators should unite to keep this market strong!

I’m so glad I saw this! I had an Arby’s fish sandwich yesterday and I knew I was going to be in for trouble because it had a weird aftertaste. I just looked up the ingredients of the fish. It contains onion and garlic powder and other spices. The tartar sauce has onion powder as well. All I wanted is a freaking fish sandwich! Who would have thunk. In the bathroom all evening. Sigh . . .

I gotta respect Arby's at least for having their full ingredient lists available online. One of the reasons I still go there.

Some restaurants only care about the top 9, if that.

I am so glad you posted this! I was going to grab one when I took my daughter to work next door to an Arby’s. Their window ads just look so enticing but now I know they’re Evil!

Look up other menu items and just about all sauces and condiments and sauces have onion, garlic or both.

I have found that certain digestive enzymes make a huge difference for me with garlic. I dislike onions, but I love garlic. And while the amounts put in a typical recipe aren’t typically a problem, I occasionally want to put roasted garlic on a pizza, or use it in large amounts otherwise. But this would result in gastric distress and much toilet time, plus lots of gas. Similar to what you describe with onions. But if I take certain enzymes (capsule form) a little bit before I eat, it makes a huge difference. My understanding is that there are different enzymes that help with different things, and I can’t recall offhand what’s what. But if people want to try them, I recommend a little research and then buy a variety with the enzymes that are supposed to help with whatever causes you problems.

This stuff is advertised as targeting all fodmaps, so including things like onion, garlic, beans, nuts, some fruits, lactose, other veggies. My biggest trigger by far is onion, but I notice some discomfort from peppers (especially bell peppers - so nightshades) or a garlic heavy meal.

Good old fashioned Beano helps with onion and garlic digestion too. I looked up Fodzyme just now and it looks like it applies to a broader range of things. I wonder if it would help with IBS problems. I might have to do some experimenting on myself.

If fodzyme doesn’t work for anyone trying it, you might have sulfur intolerance instead of FODMAP intolerance. Look that up. Just a heads up since it’s not a commonly known issue.
