I want to believe that there is a way to protect them, but at this point in time it honestly feels like Trump is bent on destroying the globally economy and doesn't care about the casualties in his trade war.

the way to protect them is to simply tell the big three - you cut workers shut a plant, we nationalize the plant and offer it to the highest bidder - like BYD maybe!

I honestly would be behind this... I'm hoping we can keep Toyota going and bring in some Asian/European manufacturers to replace the GM and Ford.

Considering G.M and Chrysler have a habit of taking government loans and subsidies and closing up shop anyway.

We'll just call it expenses owed.

Well Chrysler hasn't been Chrysler since FIAT bought them, then flipped to Stellantis. A shame there because FIAT had some good leadership under Marconi

This is true. The only thing Chrysler still has is the minivan I think.

They've pulled a Lancia.

I was curious so I looked - Grand Caravan (used to be Dodge) and the Pacifica both Hybrid plugin and traditional... amazing how far they have fallen

It's sad. But once Daimler pulled out this was kind of inevitable. The build quality falling through the floor for what feels like forever didn't help either.

How much money did we provide GM and Chrysler after the 2008 financial crisis? Was it $13 billion?

asian manufacturers Japan, SK etc would be my first choice as well, china isn't really our friend, but they do make a convenient piece on the board right now.

Think I’m good on BYD. Keep those shit boxes out.

I’m sorry, but your feeling is correct.

You know, that's what I thought until the "Liberation Day" tariffs were announced. Now I'm honestly can't decide if Trump and his team are Evil, or just REALLY stupid. Like before this I assumed there was a plan behind it, a stupid one, but they had some sort of plan. But now, the news tariffs announcement is just so mind-bogglingly stupid that I no longer really think it's an Evil plan. Now I think it really is Trump is that stupid and he's surrounded himself with other stupid people who won't challenge him. I assume there are some people trying to manipulate him to enact their own agenda, but I suspect Trump is so stupid and has such a fragile ego that it's only kinda working.

Its just applying tariffs to EVERY country in the world, even the uninhabited ones. Also using a calculation for their tariffs that actually doesn't reference their actual tariffs at all..... It's just so much more stupid than what I thought might happen

even the uninhabited ones

Keeping the media in a frenzy over trivial shit like taxing uninhabited islands is Trump's specialty. I'm sure that while the media is making hay over this they are overlooking some new quiet way the billionaires can squeeze the working class.

Ford is good at this, too. When everyone lost their shit over Bill 212 removing bike lanes, they overlooked that bill made land expropriations are easier, environmental assessments for 413 will just be skipped, and 413 will be a toll road.

If Trump raises the retirement age to 70, he'll do it the same day he declares Jupiter is an enemy planet and he's preparing to nuke it.

That's certainly plausible. Though now, I honestly think that's giving him way too much credit and way more thought went into coming up with that explanation than went into the tariffs. Heck I've heard rumours (just rumours, could be false) that Trump only decided on the plan like 3 hours before he announced it. Which would also explain things like the uninhabited islands thing, because there wasn't time. To me that sounds a LOT more likely than the whole "Trump is just playing 4d chess" nonsense.

I don't think trump is that smart but his handlers have plans they want to execute and I'm sure they are chuffed that trump can manufacture a new smoke screen every week or so.

This fool in the Oval just doesn't understand the North American Auto Industry is not a global industry. It is designed to be Built in North America for North America. Canada may not have a large number regarding sales volumes but Canada is still important...there is no export market of any consequence to expand sales to. I really don't see F150's..Rams..Chev's rolling down the streets and roads of the UK...Germany..France etc. They are not into them and their roads / parking isn't big enough. Europeans are not into the whole bigger...better...faster North American thing. If they do buy a vehicle they want them to be stylish...economical...and efficient. Added to that Ford Europe has their own line up of vehicles that are designed and made for the European market. Their public transit is so much more superior so in most cases you don't even need a vehicle.

Considering the family history that’s really saying something for Doug

Ford is not trustworthy, he is barely a step better than Trump.

u/LegoFootPain Toronto 2d ago

You see, what he does is close his eyes when he says things like "I'm exploring digging a tunnel under the 401," so he's telling the truth.

Why did I immediately picture his tiny orange fingers crossed behind his back? (•‿•)

We need Canadian brand car!

Ford actually thought he and Trump would be buddies.

Considering how much hashish this brother smoked back in the day, this is sayin’ something

u/Sorry-Bad3889 2d ago

Just cut the power.

Sadly for the autoworkers, Doug Ford is always announcing he’s going to do something, he doesn’t actually ever follow through on anything.

If anyone that can provide an example of Ford doing something he says he going to do, I’ll buy them one of those buck a beers

1

u/Usual_Yak_300 2d ago

Protect. I'm going to say this to protect my ass from the auto workers.

u/Fritja 2d ago

Again, move on. Trump has put the tariffs on and he will likely put on more. We need to put our energy into building our own infrastructure, creating stronger alliances with other countries and supporting our own businesses as well. And let it go about who voted for Trump and who didn't. His is their head of state and that's a fact. Forget about Americans and the US.

u/RudeAudio 2d ago

Lol didn't Doug just say people who are struggling should go to the food bank?

7

u/starving_carnivore 2d ago

No, he said that if you needed to use a food bank due to food spoilage from a natural disaster, you should do so.

One of the weirdest, most disingenuous controversies I've ever seen.

Do you think it's government's job to buy you groceries or something? People have renters' and homeowners insurance for this very reason.

u/arsapeek 2d ago

yeah dude, cuz game recognize game

u/Big_Sherbet7582 2d ago

Until then, since the Carney Liberal government will not step up, perhaps Premier Ford would consider establishing an emergency provincial E.I. registered Supplementary Unemployment Benefit plan for tariff victims to top up lost wages to 95% of lost earnings as well as temporary bridging monies for laid-off trade war casualties w/o sufficient hours to qualify for regular EI benefits?
