📚Political Optimism 🧑‍⚖️🌎 how long do we think these new tariffs will last?

now i know ive posted alot about this, and im sorry, but its difficult not to. theyre going to make inflation worse and im worried about the crash, the uncertainty it gives to investors and everything else.

what do you think the chances of him watering down or backing down from the tariffs?

theres his history of backing down, the growing unease from congress republicans, unease from businesses, and lawsuits against the tariffs

what do y'all think chances of it are? i hope soon

I understand you are worried by them, all of us are, but we literally do not know how long they will last. They could be around for weeks or months. Maybe he gets rid of them this coming week. We have no idea. We have evidence of pushback from multiple groups, but until that pushback gets too severe, will the answer be more clear.

Take a deep breathe. Step back from social media and the news for a day or two. We will survive this, and eventually, there will be an end.

Yeah, the Great Depression didn't last forever. After Hoover came one of the best presidents of all time, FDR. We may get president AOC out of this or some other progressive candidate along with many more progressives elected to Congress.

I know I'm not OP, but I'm scared about this as well. I work at a grocery store, I don't know what I'm gonna do when I go to work in a few days and see frozen pizza selling for $40.00 and veggies going for $12.00 a pound. I don't see how anybody is going to be able to survive under these conditions.

Hey One_Trick I don’t want to downvote you because it’s probably not as helpful. So I’ll give some advice. BREATHE. Take a deep breath, hold and then release. Do this multiple times.

Someone once told me that worrying is nothing more than worshiping a problem that hasn’t happened yet. We’re not sure what the future holds, so why let it take away the small joys you have today?

No one is saying to be delusional but take it one day at a time.

They're Trump's new favorite toy. He puts them in place, the stock market crashes, his billionaire puppetmasters get to buy up stocks dirt cheap while still being so rich they won't even feel the effects of the economy going to shit. He backs them down, the stock market starts to recover, the billionaires make even more profit. Up, and down, up, and down. It's like a See-Saw, that the imbecile claps for every time, like the toddler he is.

These specific tariffs? Who knows. Could be gone in mere days, maybe weeks. Would be very surprised if they stay for months at a time. But there will be more tariffs, that will then be backed down, that will then be replaced with more tariffs, etc, etc. It'll be a bumpy ride of literal ups and downs until one of two things happen: Congress grow spines and take Trump's toy away until he learns to behave, or better yet, Trump is no longer President. Which happens sooner is anyone's guess. But eventually, one or the other WILL happen. Whether it's tomorrow or in 2028, we just have to hold out until then.

It may help if instead of spending your time worrying, you start looking for ways to keep yourself well in spite of than. That way you'll win no matter what. Tariffs go? You've only lost a little time. Tariffs stay? You're prepared to take care of yourself.

Humanity has survived many apocalyptic level disasters far worse than economic depression. Things will be different, possibly difficult, possibly sad. But we will get through it, and the good times are not gone. Just different.

We will be ok.

Maybe try to plant some vegetables/fruit? A lot of our fresh food comes from either Canada, or central/South America, so that’s a productive thing you can do.

Maybe until the next administration. Maybe much sooner. Biden put in tariffs and nobody noticed. We had tariff wars in 2018 and only those of us in Logistics seemed to have been annoyed by them. These are just mega stupid so hoping with all the backlash against them it won’t be that long.

Trump has no sense, no awareness and no plan. He doesn't care about anyone or anything. They'll last till he leaves.

Trump just is so stupid and clearly none of the voters are educated as fuck and not only that, they are agreeing what trump is saying mindlessly. So until they get hit, they would blame the democrats but the other would be wide aware. I do know that Las Vegas hits heavily since Canadian come to Vegas majority and losing that would make less money in the city. It sucks.

The tariffs are designed to extract pledges of allegiances from US businesses. Agree to tow Trump's line (e.g. lay off any employees who oppose Trump) and he will carve out an exception for your company.

This is fascism settling in.

Get out there and protest. Hard.

If theyre not gone by next week, theyll probably stay strong for our entire lives

What possible evidence do you have to claim they'll be around forever? That's not being optimistic at all, let alone realistic!

Seems like OP is hopelessly lost and defeated. I wouldn't say full doomer, but definitely deeply defeated. They seem like someone you could provide countless evidence of this administration being slapped around, and still say it's over.

I hope one day they can look past that defeat, and realize the fight isn't over. But today doesn't seem like that will be the day.

...

Yes...

I admit it, ok? Im defeated

I havent been able to have hope for a long time, understand how spectacularly disheartening this entire situation is, how can I even see the light at the end of the tunnel when, well... points out the window

If you look for the light, you are sure to find it. But if you look for the dark, it is all you will ever see.

I know, those words probably ring hollow because "looking for the light" isn't easy, and can take practice, but it's the definition of optimism. We all have days that are harder than others to be optimistic on. There's not a human alive that hasn't faltered before. What's important is to try your best, and don't fall into the trap of thinking that if you don't succeed today that you'll never succeed again.

Thank you

Perhaps is just a bad day

What evidence do you have for us to be optimistic? You can't eat optimism. You can't pay your bills with "thinking good thoughts".

I'd be surprised if America's tariffs on other countries last longer than a few months to a year. I'd be very surprised if they last longer than 2 years. And I'll admit I don't fucking understand anything about world politics or economics if they're still a thing at the end of this presidency.

They're throwing sand into how our economy works at the same time that DOGE is throwing wrenches in. Things are going to get very weird in just a few months if they stick to their current plan.

The retaliatory tariffs, however, might last a lot longer. A lot of countries relied on the US from the 50s through the 80s. We don't live in the same world where America can ask Japan to cool off their economy so we can remain dominant. We live in a world where Japan, Korea, and China agreed to coordinate their tariffs.

Even if America stops putting a tariff on other countries, we just gave the whole world a good reason to diversify their economies and become more self sufficient. We did this entirely on a whim, and if this stimulates the economies of other countries... They may have little incentive to go back.

Brazil and China, for example, are now a lot closer economically after Trump went after China during his last presidency. China imports a lot of Soy. Brazil and the United States are the top Soy producers. China decided to buy more from Brazil, and Brazil stepped up their supply. They ended up being a more reliable trading partner than the US.

In the end, we may end tariffs on other countries soon, if the economy goes sideways fast, but other countries have less of an incentive if it diversifies their economy.
