By the time the cybertruck came out there were better alternatives for less money. Elon had already bought Twitter and was already off the rails MAGA. People knew what they were getting into.
Personally I'm not going lose my mind and boycott an entire company because the CEO is kind of an asshole. I'd run out of companies to shop from, and it's kind of a long list (https://www.newsweek.com/american-businesses-supporting-donating-donald-trump-list-2027957). The sharp and substantial difference here is that in this case the CEO is working to dismantle and takeover our government while casually throwing sieg heils. These are recent developments, and I'll safely assume most Cybertruck/Tesla owners didn't vote for this shit.
You say boycott as if you need to make constant decisions to avoid it when all you have to do is not buy one car. A car that is actually more expensive and less impressive than the other options, so it is not like it actually costs you money to avoid it. Even if you weren't trying to boycott Tesla there are still plenty of reasons to not buy the cyber truck.
We bought an X in 2023. We haven't had any issues with it and we like it a lot more than the Cayenne we had before it. Us owning Teslas has absolutely nothing to do with Elon though. I would prefer they find a new CEO. I can't see myself in any other brand of car though. I would consider a Rivian (Lucid doesn't sell enough annually for me to feel comfortable buying one.) I just refuse to buy from an actual dealership after experiencing ease of purchase.
Not if you need to charge several times to get up to the mountains and back. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the R1T, but as an owner of a Nissan Leaf and a Model Y having a dedicated charging network makes owning an EV a dramatically better experience. Charging on the Leaf is a miserable and stressful experience.
How so? Genuinely curious. I've never had enough money to own an EV lol but seriously thought about it with the Colorado EV we just had where you could lease a leaf for like $30/mon
There are no standards. You have to sign up for a different charging service by region, download an app. You show up you don’t know if the chargers are occupied or worse broken with no plans to ever repair, b/c YMMV on if the company actually maintains their chargers. You have to do all your route planning beforehand and hope when you show up charging is available, and you might be stuck waiting around. Or stuck downloading an app. Or hoping you have enough charge to get to the next charging station. Tesla to their credit directs you to the cheapest, available chargers. Does all the route planning. Preconditions your battery. With a Tesla a road trip doesn’t take any longer than a gas vehicle. At the end of the day it’s a good American company with talented engineers, and I look forward to supporting them again someday after they lose the Nazi.
With a Tesla a road trip doesn’t take any longer than a gas vehicle.
Ehhhhh, yeah it does. Especially if you have to charge more than once, and also want to arrive at your destination with a useable charge. Mind you, I don't really care too much about the extra time, but it's nowhere near as fast as gassing up and going.
lol, I have children. We’re stopping every 2-3 hours anyway, so the 10-15 minutes doesn’t feel any different then stopping at a gas station and having to deal with bathroom/snack breaks.
I hear ya. But it's still a longer trip than an ICE. especially when the kiddos can figure out how to hold it, and you need 60% charge at your destination. Again, doesn't really bother me, but let's be real. If you don't have little kids (or a microscopic bladder yourself), it's significantly longer than driving a gas vehicle.
This is part of the reason why I'm annoyed that the President issued an Executive Order undoing all the Biden-era grants to put in standardized chargers. The idea was to make charging easier for everyone.
I think it was done to help the EV industry generally by encouraging people to buy EVs, which we want to do because of climate change and because fossil fuels are not good for air quality/human health.
I think Tesla is doing Model 3 leases for under $400 a month. I would imagine you could get other EVs that low as well right? Like is Chevy doing the Blazer EV for cheaper now? I know I kept seeing ads for an $899 Hummer EV lease which is a lot of money monthly, but I thought it was a killer deal for a $100k vehicle. I didn't see the details though.
I apologize if I'm assuming you can afford that I don't know your financial situation at all. It's honestly just insane how expensive vehicles have gotten since 2019.
E-Tron for $200s is actually crazy. These are econo car lease deals. I assume because they're having trouble selling them.
I live in south Alabama and the Chevy dealer near me had 2 Blazer EVs sit for 6+ months. I think my friend told me they finally sold to out of towners. I'm sure for a killer deal. I haven't seen anyone in my town drive a Blazer EV.
Yea the problem is with leasing, which is almost always a nonstarter for me. I only know the leaf deal bc a friend had to scramble for a car and was super close to doing it.
There's someone that drives the Hummer EV on my commute so I see it all the time, $900 actually sounds like a pretty solid deal. That thing is actually pretty cool, and I used to really hate on them lol.
Eh I could make it work but my work and lifestyle demand an SUV or truck. I've always wanted to drive a Tesla around for a little while but ultimately not the right call to buy/lease.
As someone who would buy one to actually tow I was pretty excited when I originally heard the specs. I was horrified when I actually saw it for the first time but I'm even thankful for that after reading this.
My wife and I live in TX (voted blue our entire lives) and she purchased a Model Y for all the reasons you listed. She looked hard at the Hyundai Ioniq because I drive a hybrid Hyundai but due to the rebates the Model Y was actually cheaper.
There is absolutely no excuse to vandalize Teslas of hard-working Americans. If some angry idiot comes on my property to vandalize or do god-knows-what else I will shoot them dead with no compunction. I have a newborn in my house and someone crazy enough to trespass in TX is crazy enough to harm my family.
Seriously. “Let’s go destroy some likely democrats property, that’ll show trump” is the dumbest most cowardly shit in the world. Yes, boycott. Yes sell the stock and cancel your preorders… I did. No don’t fuck with the people or their property when they were trying to make the best, we’ll-intentioned decision at the time, and is probably (or would have been) sympathetic to your cause.
Yeah, fuck Musk and everyone like him but attacking each other when we are in the midst of an Oligarchy would be laughable if it weren't so depressing.
I was interested in either one or a Rivian to tow a trailer for business without buying gasoline. Since then it's become obvious that towing things ruins range for EV and the price tags on both Rivian and the cyber were out of reach. As to musky I always hated the very existence of any billionaire so didn't care about him per se, although he has progressed into a class of his own repulsiveness wise. I do urge people to take their feelings about him and just extend them to all the rest of the oligarchs.
You did the right thing. Don’t let crazy people take the pride away from your act of protecting our environment. We don’t need the left to start selling their EVs only to buy gas guzzlers.

Why is this hard to imagine?
- I like the environment.
- I like EVs.
- I'm okay with unique looking vehicles.
- I like established charging networks.
- I like camping.
- I don't like nazis.
I haven't bought a Cybertruck, but I maybe would if they dumped Elon.
