Soft Paywall The Biggest Scandal of the Second Trump Term Isn’t “Signalgate” | The national-security chat debacle certainly merits attention. But the Trump administration is now blatantly disappearing students and others who are in the country legally.

FL, one of the most red states, and maybe the biggest tourist destination in north America, is going to get crushed. They already have to dig out from and rebuild from hurricanes every year to the point they cannot insure their properties.

Yup, wouldn't even step in the US now for a conference. In 2019 I was debating doing my post-doc there, those times are long gone though.

With the world cup in 2026, i cant imagine how people from all over the world would consider flying to the US... Where they ask for your phone and social media and then background check anything you've ever said against anything they don't like... Terrifying for tourism!

As an American, I urge all foreigners to stay away. This country is under a fascist regime and is not safe for you, or us frankly. Use your power and freedoms to condemn us. Make it hurt. We can take it. We need any and all help you can provide to fight this threat to the world and to the American People.

Sorry to disappoint but international tourism to the US only accounts for about 10% of that total. Unless we have internal boycotts this will unfortunately have very little effect.

What about travel? Like conferences and things?

But yeah internal boycotts are key, certainly boycott red states at the very least

If you guys could boycott Florida, that would be fantastic. Make this shit hurt. I hope every immigrant leaves and they can't find anyone to do their lawn maintenance, agriculture, etc.

That’s mostly domestic tourism though, right?

That'd be like 9% of US GDP

I’ve never met an American I didn’t like, but yeah sorry folks, I’m not travelling to America any time soon.

The thing is this isn’t something that will end after Trump, when people try other things they find alternatives. My kids were pestering me to take them to Disneyland but are just as excited with the trip I’ve booked to Japan for Nintendo World. No country is irreplaceable.

How much of that $2.3T number is international tourism? Because I doubt many Americans are canceling thier domestic vacations to protest this administration.

It will make very little difference. Most people aren't politically engaged.

Most of those who are considering travelling to the US won't hear about this at all, and of those who do, most won't change their plans because they're not involved in any activism against America's allies or for their enemies.

Palestinian activists have been saying for years now that the American government is supporting genocide, how many of them are going to such a country anyway?
