Soft Paywall Dow tumbles 1,000 points after China retaliates against Trump’s tariffs

Hey MAGA... close to retirement? Look at your 401k... how's that for "winning"?
292
u/AmrokMC 1d ago edited 1d ago
And with Social Security now in flames, people retiring were counting on their 401k withdrawls to compensate for the increased prices of everything. A lot of people are going to needlessly suffer because this idiot doesn’t know what he is doing.

A lot of people are going to needlessly suffer because this idiot doesn’t know what he is doing.
He knows exactly what he's doing and doesn't care. The suffering is the point.
44
u/Sarnsereg 1d ago
I think it's a mixed bag, he knows what he's doing, but is so stupid that he couldn't be doing much worse for the world if he tried.
50
u/wildweaver32 1d ago
It's calculated. Just look at the Tariffs. He hit islands with 0 people on them. He hit islands with only US Troops on them. Which shows he doesn't care if it makes sense or not.
But who didn't he hit with Tariffs? Russia, and NK. He couldn't be doing much worse for the Western World.
On the flip side he is trying to lift sanctions on Russia. He is trying to force Ukraine into a surrender where Russia gets a dream scenario. Now he is talking about taking Greenland by force. Which again makes no sense, unless you few it from Russia's perspective. If Russia intends to continue their war path in Europe and brings in the US as an Ally they need the US to have a military base that won't get ransacked by it's host European country. Insert a desire and need to take a country between the US and Europe. One that would be surrounded by water and easier to defend if needed.
None of it makes sense until you look at it as, "How does it help Russia".

u/BlondeBorednBaked 1d ago
Everything Trump has done in office is to help Russia. He’s dumb, but that’s not why he’s doing this. It’s because he’s a traitor. It’s an important distinction we have to keep making because saying he’s incompetent is giving him cover. There’s a difference between incompetence and treason.
18
u/Imhappy_hopeurhappy2 1d ago
Also, Republicans know this. They are gaslighting us but they secretly admire Putin and Russia for their staunch social conservatism and white/christian nationalism. They think they’re going to be slick and combine that kind of society with the economic might and libertarian idealism of the US, unaware that those ideas are completely contradictory and they’re simply rooting for totalitarian oligarchy.

The only thing he is doing is trying to service his own desperate ego. That’s it. He want’s countries to beg him for mercy. Because that feels good to him. That’s it.
He’s the most basic human being possible. There is nothing “advanced” going on here.
6
u/Catshit-Dogfart 1d ago
Sometimes I think the whole deal with taking over Greenland is far more simple than anybody makes it out to be - it's because they told him no
He talked about this in the first term and they flatly said no. Well if you've ever been around a bratty kid, telling them no causes a tantrum. And if you've ever been around the parent enabling their brat, they never say no and let them have whatever they want regardless of how disruptive or destructive.
Greenland told him no and he's not having that. And sometimes I think all the complex reasoning about metal resources and whatnot are vastly overthinking what's going on here.
Well, it could be similar with the tarrifs.
Every single economist and advisor and expert told him no, he threw a tantrum until he got his way, and here we are. All this talk about manufacturing and jobs and national security, way too complex, it's far more simple than that.

u/Digbickvegas 1d ago edited 1d ago

A lot of my friends in gov already took one of those buy out early offers. Sure they get it early, but they don't get any COLAs till 62. Now with 401k/TSP going down, I'm kinda glad I didn't leave as their buying power is going to go straight down for years.

u/pervocracy Massachusetts 1d ago
I've already been informed by various fine Republicans of Reddit that nobody really needs to eat eggs, and all that stuff you were planning to buy from China is probably just junk you don't need anyway.
Clearly they totally expected this, and voted for it because of their minimalist, anti-consumerist ideals.

I know a MAGA that is retired and depends on his $250k he has in the market as part of his income. His at least one of his MAGA kids are depending on an “inheritance” to be able to retire.
Things do not look good for that family and it’s 100% on Trump. I wonder how they will cope.

He's not doing it to own the libs, he's doing it because he's 80 and is scared of immigrants and proudly racist (due to, his excuse, his life experiences of some fucked up threats and other things a black guy did to his daughter after the guy wrecked into her in a car 20 years ago).

If they were risky with being in mutual funds, might be off by 4-6% at this point.
If they were all in on indual stocks? RIP
2
u/Catshit-Dogfart 1d ago
I somewhat question my dad's retirement investment advisor for this reason.
So he has all this money being managed by a professional retirement outfit, we were going over it a while back and I realized it's all stocks. Now I'm no expert (my own portfolio is a testament to that) but isn't that supposed to be in slow growth safe investments when you're at or beyond retirement age? He's 65 and retired, hasn't started drawing from it yet but he'll be required to soon. I thought that was supposed to be mutual funds and stuff.
Just doesn't seem right to me, but they're supposed to be professionals.

28
u/ohffsredditnowwhat 1d ago
I just checked, Not a single story about the stock market but yea, lets talk more about trans athletes in fencing. They actually have 2 trans stories on the front page. JFC this country is beyond repair.
20
u/ErusTenebre California 1d ago
Oh they are OBSESSED with transwomen. You'll very rarely see them talking about transmen. It's because conservative men are worried about being hit on by a woman with a penis (not kidding) and conservative women are worried about being raped by a man in a dress. The irony of it all is that 1) no one is willingly hitting on those kinds of men, and 2) by blocking access to transpeople based on sex at birth, women put men in their restroom.
They've created such a ridiculous image of transgender people that it is not only frightening and shameful, it's idiotic too.

To take a page from MAGA: it won’t affect ME in any way I can’t weather, so bring it on. Hopefully we’ll get the same results as last time - no republican control of the country for 50+ years.
12
u/AdPsychological8883 1d ago
They have only ever paid attention when the commoners make it real uncomfortable for them.
19
u/DeliberatelyDrifting 1d ago
It MAY get uncomfortable for them this time. There is every possibility that this gets out of control. I don't think it's likely places like China and the EU keep playing tit-for-tat. I think they're going to set their policy and move on. The idiot coming out tomorrow and announcing successful negotiations and ending the tariffs tomorrow wouldn't just whipsaw the market back. China in particular will likely want to punish us. The most stable, resilient economy in the world is now one of it's most unstable. It can take months to build a building, but removing the right supports will collapse it in moments, and you can't just put them back and have a building again.

But at the same time, I don't want to wait 4 or even 2 years for this shit to be fixed. Either way things are going to be a mess and painful. We need our other two branches to help hit the brakes. It makes me sad that I have no idea if they will.

They want their voters to feel the pain because then it valdiates what they have always said: the government doesn't work. It’s at this stage in a Trump fiasco completely of his own making I like to try and predict or bet with myself how the right media is going to spin this.
I think it will be along the lines of ‘Biden left the country and world is such a dangerous mess Trump had to try to do something radical to save the world! Trump’s hand was forced by the radical left lunatics’ or something like that.
Or Trump will just say all negative tarriff related news is fake and they’ll have to eat it.
10
u/I_Hate_Consulting 1d ago
Exactly... It'll go something like this...
Despite President Trump's efforts to single-handedly save the economy with his brilliant an innovative tariffs strategy, the cancer that is "Bidenomics" runs deeply in our Democrat ravaged economy. We here at Fox News cheer President Trump on as he continues his tireless and valiant battle to save America. We can only pray that the economy never falls into Democrat control again.

Saw that and its hilarious. As if its a video game and all you have to do is click a button and a little worker man pops out and builds a factory in a minute.
They really don't get what it takes to build a factory, how long it would take, where are all these workers with low wages are coming from or who in their right mind would spend funds building it if they are not certain of anything.
Oh and not to mention that you can't produce everything, try as you might but diamonds or coffee is not going to magically grow in Texas or Alabama
10
u/DeliberatelyDrifting 1d ago
Not to mention all of the shit you need to build a factory just got a lot more expensive. Plus, the specialist engineers might not want to visit for things like training and installation. You'd have to be an idiot to break ground on just about any project right now.
3
u/tylerbrainerd 1d ago
they're just fundamentally clueless about how society operates and how the economy responds to these things, because they are, whether they admit it or not, of a philosophy that makes them believe that they are INHERENTLY better than everyone else. They think that the rules operate according to their demands, and they have been unfairly kept down by immigrants/minorities/women/whoever they're blaming this week.
So they really think that if they just SAY that something should happen, IE "this means manufacturing jobs are coming back to America" then they don't have to deal with the reality of the situation which is that those jobs didn't leave america because of wokeness.
3
u/DeliberatelyDrifting 1d ago
Yeah, I don't really get the "wait it out" crowd. This wasn't a systemic problem like 2008 or natural disaster like Covid. This is a global realignment based on a lack of trust in the US, the underpinning of almost the entire global economy. It doesn't just go away if we throw cash at it.
4
u/tylerbrainerd 1d ago
only if you're a nationalist, and specifically a white nationalist or christian nationalist, and you literally believe there's a fundamental difference in the type of person who is in your in group.
2
u/xTheMaster99x Florida 1d ago
Especially when they can wait for the economy to crash, real estate bubbles pop, then buy up the land to build factories on, pay way less on the construction because the construction companies are desperate for new builds to work on, and employ all the desperate, unemployed 99%ers for a fraction of what they would've expected a year ago because they're a month away from losing their homes, so they'll take whatever they can get.
8
u/wildweaver32 1d ago
You hit the nail on the real kicker. The uncertainty of it all.
Like even if you were a billionaire and could just fully fund a new factory from scratch without worrying about the cost, redtape, or anything else and just push forward and eat all the cost in hopes of a pay day at the end.
Would that payday still even be there? Imagine spending several years funding a project like that at a lost because it can't sell anything until it's finished. And then when you finish find out a Democrat came into office, or a less insane Republican came into office and removes those Tariffs and suddenly the factory cannot make any money lol.
It's an insane gamble that I don't see anyone taking.
6
2
u/runtheplacered 1d ago
They really don't get what it takes to build a factory
They also don't get that Trump is trying to get rid of the CHiPS act which would get us much needed high-tech manufacturing. We don't really need a lot more low-level manufacturing jobs here. The unemployment rate was about 4% when Biden left office. What we needed was a way to start manufacturing technology.

So is Trump going to be soft and eat it or is he going to "punch back"?
And are other countries going to retaliate?
Either Trump retaliates and things get even worse or he folds and the only thing the US got was further alienating friends and foes alike (except for Russia...weird).

Honestly, I spent a few weeks in China earlier this year and it was a really nice place. Sure, their government has their faults like any other, but at least they do a lot to make ordinary middle class people’s lives better. If we’re going full-on authoritarian anyway I’d rather have China’s social authoritarianism that provides services to where the market doesn’t meet the needs of the people than our authoritarian oligarchy where the government helps a handful of billionaires and the rest of us fend for ourselves for scraps.

I get that there is a need to optimize efficiency and efficacy in processes, human capital and technology.
But you build a bridge if you expect things to “be hard for a while”. Ripping off the proverbial bandaid and then throwing the salt of tariffs into the wound of so many jobless people (dont give me that crap about the number of jobs added in March) is a recipe for the disaster we’re seeing play out.
Is there any way to stop this!
