Russia being led by a genocidal dictator who has allowed his mates to squirrel away all of the gas wealth into their superyachts and who has turned the place into a pariah state that almost no one will trade with probably has something to do with it.

Short answer: it doesn't, because the only metric that matter is GDP PPP. However, since it paints Russia in positive light, it's not usually used on reddit.

No. GDP PPP is useful for measuring differences in living standards. Nominal GDP is for what's happening here - comparing national economies. Population is irrelevant if you're just talking about the economy and not how it affects the people living there.
