Spoken by someone who hasn't lived here. People that don't live here always say this shit. I've been here 30 years and sure it's pricey but I've got a house, two dogs, a pc, a garden and everything within driving distance nature-wise. California has been cool to me m.

Many times I've talked to people from red states visiting here for the first time and they are always shocked at how nice it actually is, how nice the people are, how it's not at all like they thought it was. Their media tries to keep them thinking that they have it better so their politicians can keep taking advantage of them. Not like we don't have that same issue in some capacity, but at least there's some accountability.

I heard a good stand up bit I’m having trouble finding it but the comedian’s name was Tommy Brennan where he talks about people from rural towns saying they don’t have homeless people and then pointing at someone at the bar that looks homeless and they’re like “Nah, that’s Curbside Carl he’s here every day he just hangs out by the curbside every night!”

my conservative relatives coming to visit us in portland oregon experience the same. Their town sucks compared to ours and theyre always shocked how nice it is here

I was raised in Louisiana and have been in SF for over 20 years. A conservative family member from Texas recently visited SF and we met for dinner. The very first thing he said to me was "this city is amazing, why does everyone I know talk shit about SF?".

He had no idea until he visited.

I’ve been to SF a couple times and I thought it was great. People try to tell me stories of needles and human shit being in the street but I didn’t see any of that.

SF certainly has it's share of homeless and all that comes with that, but so does every major city. My family from Houston said the same.

The Bay area is one of the most expensive places to live in the world, there is a reason for that, and it's not because it sucks.

Fr I hear my Texas friends tell me it's too expensive. Bitch where I live minimum wage is $19/hr. It's not perfect but I can live alone without a car and take the train where my scooter can't reach. It's amazing. I have options, I'm not trapped. You're trapped with a crumbling house, dying car, a dead end job at buckees, I can move to Hawaii if I wanted. I don't I very much enjoy the cold, but if I wanted I could.

California is the best. The weather, the topography, and the people. By far the nicest people I’ve met anywhere were neighbors living in LA.

Does California have a myriad of problems? Very yes.

Does California have the problems that people not from here claim it has? Generally, no.

It's the classic "They hate us 'cause they ain't us".

Same. I've lived in CA since 1987. I tried living in Utah for a few years. Sorry to say this anyone from Utah, but it was kind of a shithole compared to California. Bit the bullet (financially) and moved back, and it's the best decision I've ever made.

I'm lucky enough to be able to move back and I know that isn't possible for everyone, considering the cost of living, but I'll never leave again.

I lived all over the US, and to this very day, Dallas Tx has been the most expensive spot I’ve lived. I’ve lived in LA/NYC too.

Some parts of California are amazing for sure.. having just spent a week in SF (coming from a super liberal NYC suburb, so same side in general) you guys have some serious shit that needs fixing.

Which means you also don't live in the places where houses are affordable. You live in a place that is less impoverished and has more homelessness than Houston. The 'you don't actually live here' bullshit goes both ways, but we don't need to pull that crap when we have actual data instead of anecdotes. You're doing the exact same thing as the people you are trying to dunk on.

I'm merely pointing out hyperbole and wasn't dunking on anyone. Everywhere has its share of problems. Relax. California has affordable places, but you'd know that if you came here lol. There's more cities here than just LA and SF.
